Throw in a good selection of lagers, ales and guests like Ilkley brewery this place ticked all the boxes for me :-) Supposedly the DJ's they have in here regularly are pretty good too! I'll be back next time I'm in Liverpool.

Anyone who is familiar with the excellent Bungalows and Bears of Sheffield will not be surprised with The Shipping Forecast as the same group has brought their stripped down ethos of good beer, good music and comfy surroundings to Liverpool. The music is as eclectic as the shabby chic interior and can give Mello Mello a run for its money. The guys here have torn away any reminder of the venues Flares past to reveal lovely bare brick walls and wooden floors giving the place a very natural feel. Ale drinkers will be pleased too - which might come in handy situated on Slater Street - as there is a good selection of beers on draught. Me and me mate got some food here too, and while I do not wish to say anything bad about somewhere so new, when I order Fish n Chips, I expect chips not fries - it's just not cricket. Danny on the other hand was very pleased with his steak and ale pie - once he battled through the crust. It's good pub grub, with a good choice of burgers and sandwiches all reasonably priced under 7 with chips. It could be a very brave move to set up camp on Slater Street but hopefully it is a sign of things to come. With Santa Chupito and Mello down the road we could be seeing a new scene emerging but first TSF must hold its own against Slater's more traditional elements.

It's obviously retained its musical culture and turned it into something relaxing, interesting and painfully chic. In a good way. Walk in and you're greeted not only with candy for the eyes, but the same for the nose. No, not THAT kind of nose candy, even though it has a strong history with musicians (including the likes of Diana Ross, Take That, Echo and the Bunnymen and many mire), it's just that Studio 2 is one of the most nasally stimulating bars I've ever experienced. Whether it's cooking smells or cocktail aromas the place just seems to be buzzing with a scented ambience, and the chilled out bustle of its clientele and the sumptuous decor just adds more weight to that. The drinks prices are actually mighty reasonable for such a sophisticated place. Advertised as being a place for the over 30s, if you're a discerning twenty-something like me you'll be more than welcome, just as long as you adhere to the dress code. This I like - it means the bar attracts a more classy clientele and you're as likely to see a rowdy brawl break out here as you are to see the Pope become the spokesperson for safe sex. The staff are friendly, and as well as the place being a bar it's also got a great dining menu from the same brainboxes that serve the food at Alma de Cuba. Now that's a stamp of approval if ever one was needed. One of the original drum rooms serves as the dining area and the other is filled with beanbags to crash on. You can't be more chilled out than you are if seated on a bean bag. With live music every Saturday and an atmosphere perfect for someone looking for a quieter and more cultured night out - it's perfect for dates, for example - you can't argue with the quality of this place. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I'm sure you will too.

We found this gem in the heart of the city center and went the hole weekend there. The atmosphere was amazing, people enjoyed the music, their drinks and had fun. Next to the various cocktails we gave the food a go and loved it. It got served on a big platter. It looked good and tasted delicious. I had the best chicken ever! Big "Thank You" to the chef for this experience. After the friendly staff told us about the history of the venue we enjoyed it more than before. It used to be a recording studio where Coldplay, Atomic Kitten, Take That and lot of other musicians recorded their album....sooo exciting. I can only recommand this place. Amazing venue, nice & friendly staff, delicious drinks, food and live music. We don't really have this type of venue in Germany...really a shame! I would go there every day.

The resident DJ's play a mixture of jazz, soul and funk which really gives it a latin feel. The top bar area has a chilled out relaxing ambience where you can have a quiet drink with friends or snuggle up with someone in the cosy booths. The basement level, known as The Sink has a completely different mood, more of a club party atmosphere with a huge sound system. They host DJ's and live music throughout the week. Then there's another area, known as the Fish Tank which is really chilled but still has a decent variety of music, just not as "clubbish". Make sure you check out the website before heading down for a night out because sometimes it is ticket only entry which can be a bummer if you didn't know. Also, there can often be a big queue to get in, so expect to wait and even be turned away at the door if you don't look smart enough. Its 24 hour licence makes it extremely popular after hours so your best bet is to get in early.

The venue consists of a ground-floor bar and seating area, and at the back you can usually find a DJ and an impromptu dancefloor just outside the loos. The vibe here is generally jazz, funk, soul and anything chilled out and groovy. Downstairs hosts various music events and is split into the main dancefloor area, with a stage and elevated DJ box, where you can hear anything from drum & bass to disco; and the fishbowl, which has more seating and a different atmosphere once again. The Magnet has been going since 1958 and was one of the city's first black venues, and you can still see evidence of this today. It is a club that has remained faithful to its roots, and always puts music and a chilled atmosphere top of its list of priorities. The Zanzibar is air conditioned, which is great during summer. It is a small venue but has plenty of room for standing to watch a gig, with large tables for resting your drinks on. It also has a raised seating area with lots of comfy seats, tables and stools where you can hang out to watch the bands. The sound always seems to be excellent in the Zanzibar. So often at venues the sound can take a few songs to get right, but the sound technicians here really do give the impression that they pay attention in sound checks and they get it right. The lighting is good but fairly basic, but as this is only a small venue too much would be inappropriate. The stage area is small and is on ground level rather than being raised, but it sort of gives the impression of a more intimate environment for a gig. The toilets are not the nicest. They are pretty basic and in need of a refurb, but I've seen a hell of a lot worse. The bar staff are very friendly and once you have been to the bar a couple of times they remember what you have been ordering and ask if that's what you want again. They make you feel very welcome. This is an excellent inexpensive venue.

The Zanzibar is the ideal place to crawl into to get your fix of forgettable support bands and chord-striking gems. Grimy and tattered inside, the venue is cripplingly dark for two reasons- atmosphere and hiding the state of the place. God knows what the walls look like but despite this, I think history will look back on this place fondly, and not just for those UV lights.
