Saw The Killers here at a private show as part of the excellent Omniture Summit 2010 in and…read moreobviously enjoyed the special access of the show. Without that influencing my rating too much (a free, private Killers show is obviously a 5 Star rating), the venue stands out on its own pretty well and exceeded my expectations. Pros -Size: this place is huge and has a wide open standing-room area in front of an elevated stage as well as a cat-walk like elevated area that rings the floor. Provides lots of good viewing angles with few obstructions from the stage. The House of Blues comparison is accurate as far as feel, but the venue is far deeper. A little bit bigger than the Fillmore in SF. -Sound: good sound and light production. I heard the Killers loud and clear (and for several hours after) and my mind was blown a few times by swell light effects. Cons -Drinking Situation: this is Utah so I didn't expect a first-rate drinking experience and got about what I expected. I think this place is 18+ most times, so the bars are all on the second floor which created bottle necks and inconvenience if you wanted to be front and center at the stage. To compound that is the Utah alcohol laws that meter out your liquor at 1 oz. pours, wine at 5 oz pours and dumb-down the % in the beer. This also makes for slow service, and at $9 a pop for cocktails you're paying big city prices for kid-table drinks. (Also think about this when ordering anything which rightly should have more than 1 oz of booze in it. A martini in Utah is not a good idea.) All in though, this is more a critique of Utah's drinking regulations and so I can't rightly hold it against The Rail for doing their best in that administrative climate. -Location: it's literally on the wrong side of the tracks. Not sure where the cool going-out areas in SLC are, but Rail did not seem to be near one of them. Most of the city was well East of this location and it took a bit of a special effort to get here.

But that's not to say this is a terrible location. The sound was decent. The main floor is your basic general admission free-for all, and there were couches, tables in the upstairs, balcony-ish area (wraps all around the venue) that had a lounge-ish feel. Overall, this spot doesn't really take away from the music, but doesn't really add to it either.

I love the historic feel of this place. There's seating!! If you get there early enough there's theater style seating in addition to the standing room space. I loved having the option to sit or stand. There are two bars - one upstairs and one downstairs. I never had to wait long for drinks and the service was great. They have some snacks as well. Parking is available in the paid lot next to the venue or along the street, but it can definitely be limited so be prepared for that.

It's large enough for a more popular band, but intimiaye enough so you can still feel somewhat close to the stage. It has an upper mezzanine as well. The bar definitely has some snacks, which is nice. It gets pretty stuffy in there though. Some faves we have seen there include Hanabie, Armor for Sleep, and most recently Bloodywood!

My ID is fine since I just got a new one from Utah. The lady at the front couldn't understand hers? So they bring us in and have someone else check it. Then they tell us to leave. I asked if there was any reason and they said 'because we said so'. So we go back to my friends that were trying to get some tacos at the food truck in front of their place and the new bouncer told us to "Beat it." We are all 21 or older and were not causing a scene. We are never coming back to Johnnies and I will not recommend this bar to anyone. Couldn't even be polite or give a reason when I asked him what we did wrong, if anything. If you have a Utah ID, you're fine. If not, you're not welcome here.

There's a stage, there's lots of standing room and, depending on the event, there might be chairs. I attended a massive bingo game here and we were squeezed in pretty tight, but it was a fun party, nonetheless. There are several bar areas, some of them on wheels and will move around the venue keeping people hydrated. My only real complaint is that there isn't much parking. It's not in the greatest part of town, so you'll have to walk a block or two-just go in a group and you'll be fine.

Outside lighting is good after the show. The sound was pretty good to excellent for a venue of this type; part of this is band dependent. If you come to a rock concert be prepared for it to be loud, the way rock is meant to be heard. No whining about it being too loud. While the area is mostly an open floor with the stage in front, there is a single row of old theater seats along each wall, so you can sit if you get tired, but you won't be able to see the stage. Restrooms are conveniently located at the back of the GA area, on both sides. There is an upper balcony that wraps around the sides and back of the GA area that appears to have some tables and chairs but I've never asked about the possibilities of watching a show up there, if it's reserved seating or something else. Security is top notch, professionally behaving, observant, and concerned, but not obnoxious or impatient with some of the goofy stuff that goes on while the bands play. My only complaint is parking. It's nearly all street parking in the neighborhoods around the venue, so plan on showing up early to save yourself a bit of a walk, or park somewhere a mile or so away and then have an Uber drop you off and pick you up. This is a newer, cleaner version of the clubs I spent my college years in, back in the east. While The Union doesn't yet have the history or character of these places, it's still an excellent place to catch a show. Highly recommended!

Hands down one of the best Gardens/Arboretums I've been to. I am so happy I decided to come here on…read moremy last day in Utah. For some context, I had an 11:50pm flight, but I needed to check out of my condo by 10am. What was I going to do for the entire day? I didn't want to get too sweaty but still wanted to take advantange of the weather and be outside! Red Butte Garden turned out to be the best decision. I arrived early, and took my time strolling through the gardens. I brought my book with me and took advantage of the various seating areas throughout the gardens. It was perfect to sit in the shady (and some sunny) spots. It was quiet and relaxing with a few people here and there. The gardens are so beautifully curated, but at the same time offer opportunities for more rugged/wild expereinces in the natural areas of the park. It has been one of the few arboretums that felt so welcoming, and it truly encouraged you to spend some serious time among the flowers and trees. I also noticed that there were so many people activevly working in the gardens - something I have rarely seen at other similar places (maybe because I was visiting during work hours on a weekday?) The amphiteather on site is host of a variety of concerts - this particular summer concert series looked amazing. Wish I had more time to spend out there. I highly recommend checking out Red Butte Gardents and Arboretum!!
