The crowd on the busier nights was mixed while the slower nights were mostly gay men. The bartenders are nice and do their best for Utah's strict alcohol laws. I tried to ask what we did and why we were not allowed inside he said "I don't have time to answer or care to answer. You can not come in, as long as you don't touch me we don't have a problem" . I would like to reiterate all we did was wait in line and he put his hand in front of the door and stopped us. Then when we asked he got defensive.

Admittedly I haven't been the most…read moreconsistent patron over the years, but in that time I've seen the club slowly, and seemingly very suddenly, devolve from a dive bar with some level of respect for its patrons to a dive bar that's as lost as the current set of bartenders it employs behind its well. Don't get me wrong, I love my local gay dive bar - the patio is prime real estate, the billiards and darts are in playing condition, the dance floor is just the right size to get lost in, and the community is the very definition - but it should not take 30 minutes to get a drink, no matter how cheap the drinks are and no matter how slow or busy the joint gets. The toiles should not be covered in the same shit stains from the day, let alone the weeks(!), before. The speakers should not be so loud that you cannot communicate with the bartender or the person sitting next to you. With that said, I would say Club Try-Angles is actually entering a new "gayday" the likes of which I've never seen - blame it on all the new development around Central 9th and along Harvey Milk Boulevard. The community is more diverse, the crowds are bigger, and the camaraderie is louder! All wonderful things, but things the bar is showing it's no longer in the condition to support. If this staple of the queer community is going to thrive into the next decade, or even survive the next few years, it's going to need more TLC than its currently getting. Small things, like utilizing both sets of patio doors, cleaning the bathrooms, and strategically turning down the music would go a long way in showing that Club Try-Angles cares for its community. Additionally, reorganizing the well to be more efficient would go a long way to improving the time it takes to get a drink. Bartenders should not be bumping into each other in order to make every. single. drink! In this time of growth and change, what I would hate more than ever is for another VC Firm to buy the bar out from under us and put up a parking lot. We deserve to have this space, and we deserve to have this space show up for and represent those of us who claim Pride!

Before the show some of the performers walk around the tables to greet you. We went to the Saturday night show that started about 8ish. The brunch shows sound like a blast and I'm determined and excited to see a Halloween scary themed show ASAP. I highly recommend you bring your own money, then they will gladly change your large bills into small bills. You need the dollar bills for tips. You can throw the money on to the stage but they will walk through the crowd to pick up the tips. Then you get to see it all up close. I really enjoyed that aspect. Fabulous showmanship all around. After the show you get to enjoy the bar. They have an awesome outdoor seating area. They also had a silent disco downstairs. I always wanted to try one. It was fun I would definitely do it again. They have a free 11pm show that we didn't stay for but I really wish we would have. It was a hectic scene but service was great. Being first timers it was refreshing that they explain everything so well I got all my questions answered. Easy Peezy lemon squeezy. We got loaded fries and a quesadilla. The fries were delicious the quesadilla was over the top. Totally expected a typical thin and cheesy quesadilla. Instead it was well composed, over stuffed with ingredients, cheesy cheesy, dressed perfectly. Thank heavens they give you a fork. For drinks I got the Pink star fish refreshing and not to sweet very enjoyable, my friend got a Pink flamingo it was tart and yummy. Thank you for the delicious food and drinks.

The performers are absolutely incredible and clearly put so much time, energy, and heart into what they do. The bartenders have also consistently been awesome, friendly, and welcoming. Unfortunately, my experiences with the door person have become increasingly troubling. On multiple separate occasions, I've noticed a very clear difference in the way he treats me and my more visibly gay, queer, and trans friends compared with straight friends who are standing literally right beside us. The interactions have felt noticeably less welcoming and, at times, openly disrespectful toward queer people. I understand being a door person requires some directness and boundaries, but that should not mean kindness and compassion are thrown out the window. For a bar that serves as an important space for the LGBTQ+ community, this is really disappointing. There aren't many queer-friendly places in this city, and it's frustrating to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome as soon as you enter the building because of the person responsible for greeting people at the door. I really hope management considers providing additional training around LGBTQ+ etiquette, inclusivity, and respectful treatment of guests. I'd also love to see more queer people represented among the staff, particularly at the door, or at minimum see a meaningful change in the way this particular employee interacts with queer patrons. After multiple separate negative experiences, I honestly have been contemplating not returning, which is unfortunate because I genuinely love the performers and have otherwise enjoyed this venue. I'm going to give it one more chance in the future, because I want to support the performers and the queer community here, but I hope things change. If you're queer and you have a bad interaction with an older white man with scraggly facial hair at the door, please know that you're not imagining it or necessarily doing something wrong. My experiences suggest that there is a real issue with the way some queer patrons are being treated.
