While I REALY don't prefer standing room only venues, for what this is, it's a pretty decent place. Smaller, more intimate concerts are held here and I guess the lack of seating does increase the camaraderie when you're standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other fans enjoying the performance together. The venue is older and a little quirky, but that fits the charm. If you are lucky enough to get a parking spot right out front, you won't have far to walk. Otherwise, the Gateway is only a block or so away. The staff takes safety and security very seriously-no outside food or drink or weapons and everyone is scanned with a handheld metal detector. I saw a sign for a coat check, but didn't use it. Since there's nowhere really to stash your stuff, I'd recommend coming with minimal personal items. The next time one of my favorite indie bands or up-and-coming artists is playing here, I'll probably be there. Wearing comfortable shoes and pants with pockets for all my crap.

I love this venue for the large stage areas and access to outside. If I'm going to a concert I want to be able to dance my heart out and then step outside to cool off. The complex is perfect for loud music, epic light shows while also offering access to the cool night air to have a intimate conversation.

This is a great venue. They have some of the fastest security and ticket takers out of any concert place in salt lake. I attended vampire weekend tonight and had an amazing time. I do wish that they had emptied the garbage out prior to the concert because there was a continual stench throughout the concert area. Yuck!

I flew in from Scottsdale Arizona just to see Wolf Alice here 11/01/21 I felt like the concert was an intimate show for those that attended. Had no issues here and Utah people know some good music and they're not assholes here. Would attend another show here.

    Worst wheelchair ramp! Extremely dangerous!
    VampuricWerewolf ..

Came to a concert with my friends. I am in a wheelchair chair and my friend was helping push me. We were told the ADA area were platforms to the right of the door, awesome! I'll actually be able to see! But when we got there, the ramps are way to short and too steep of a grade for me to safely push myself up. They are made of wood with no railing on the side, just a drop off! My friend and I thought we might be able to make it, but we weren't able to get up. I started to slide backwards and grabbed the side rails of the platform itself to try to stop myself from falling over, wrenching my shoulder and twisting my back. This seems like a great venue, but I doubt I'll come back and warn anyone else in a wheelchair that if you want to be able to reach the ADA area, you will need to flag down a worker and ask them to call for backup so they can push you up. Totally humiliating!

This venue is NOT Ada friendly. They make it as difficult as possible for someone disabled to come to a concert here. I do not recommend.

I have an upcoming concert at the 'Lot' venue - I can't find any information about this venue anywhere. Does anybody have any more information on what to expect?

I had the same question and came across this--no information on their website, but I went to a show there a few days ago.… Read more

What does the VIP area look like? Is it first come, first serve?

It depends on what part of the complex your in. In The Lot outside it's up on the balcony. In the Rockwell it's fenced off and to the right. There's a few tables up front closer to the stage.… Read more

    Are kids allowed in?

Some shows are all ages, some are 18+, some are 21+. Usually shows here are all ages but most of the ppl who come here are not ones I'd want children around.

How safe is parking and walking there, where would be the safest place to park?

Well my friends and I got approached by many homeless men asking for illegal substances which is kind of unsettling because we were alone with no adult and as for parking there is parking just on the side of the road.

I love the historic feel of this place. There's seating!! If you get there early enough there's theater style seating in addition to the standing room space. I loved having the option to sit or stand. There are two bars - one upstairs and one downstairs. I never had to wait long for drinks and the service was great. They have some snacks as well. Parking is available in the paid lot next to the venue or along the street, but it can definitely be limited so be prepared for that.

We got to see Max Mcnown who without a doubt will be one of the next big stars in the coming years. The staff were friendly, the sound was great, and the place was clean. I'm certain when the lights are on you can really see its is in great shape, whereas other venues likely look awful when the lights turn on. The bathrooms were clean, the drinks were fairly priced. I would definitely come back and will keep an eye out for upcoming shows. Don't put your drinks on the stage, security is on it and will ask you to get it off right away. All good, my bad! Haha

Without that influencing my rating too much (a free, private Killers show is obviously a 5 Star rating), the venue stands out on its own pretty well and exceeded my expectations. Pros -Size: this place is huge and has a wide open standing-room area in front of an elevated stage as well as a cat-walk like elevated area that rings the floor. Provides lots of good viewing angles with few obstructions from the stage. The House of Blues comparison is accurate as far as feel, but the venue is far deeper. A little bit bigger than the Fillmore in SF. -Sound: good sound and light production. I heard the Killers loud and clear (and for several hours after) and my mind was blown a few times by swell light effects. Cons -Drinking Situation: this is Utah so I didn't expect a first-rate drinking experience and got about what I expected. I think this place is 18+ most times, so the bars are all on the second floor which created bottle necks and inconvenience if you wanted to be front and center at the stage. To compound that is the Utah alcohol laws that meter out your liquor at 1 oz. pours, wine at 5 oz pours and dumb-down the % in the beer. This also makes for slow service, and at $9 a pop for cocktails you're paying big city prices for kid-table drinks. (Also think about this when ordering anything which rightly should have more than 1 oz of booze in it. A martini in Utah is not a good idea.) All in though, this is more a critique of Utah's drinking regulations and so I can't rightly hold it against The Rail for doing their best in that administrative climate. -Location: it's literally on the wrong side of the tracks. Not sure where the cool going-out areas in SLC are, but Rail did not seem to be near one of them. Most of the city was well East of this location and it took a bit of a special effort to get here.

But that's not to say this is a terrible location. The sound was decent. The main floor is your basic general admission free-for all, and there were couches, tables in the upstairs, balcony-ish area (wraps all around the venue) that had a lounge-ish feel. Overall, this spot doesn't really take away from the music, but doesn't really add to it either.
