Enterprise Rent-a-car tried to charge me almost $1000 for a simple paint touch-up. I think it's outrageous.
The car got a scratch -- the kind that happens frequently in parking lots -- about the size of my palm. The scratch was not three dimensional in any way. The Enterprise agent agreed. No body work was required at all, just some paint on one panel.
The first bill from Enterprise showed a 390 euro charge for damage (about $440). That was high for a paint retouch, I thought, but not outrageous. I paid it.
A week later, Enterprise sent a second bill. They decided to charge another 482 euros. This one contained fees for "Admin fees", "Loss of Use", and "Diminishment of Value" that totaled 257.59 euros, plus an additional 225.10 euros for damages.
Four rounds of back and forth have yet to resolve the issue.
Shame on you, Enterprise! read more
