In my opinion, when a…read morebusiness has a bank ATM inside its store, it has a responsibility to help customers when something goes wrong. The ATM malfunctioned and trapped both my debit card and my cash inside the machine. Ted was lazy, slow, and showed no sense of urgency. He didn't offer any helpful support numbers, didn't make any effort to assist me, and didn't even offer to put an out-of-service sign on the ATM to prevent the same thing from happening to someone else. I wasn't expecting him to repair the ATM himself. I was expecting basic customer service, empathy, and someone willing to help during an incredibly stressful situation. Instead, I felt completely dismissed and disrespected. Ted's problem-solving, customer service, communication, and leadership skills, especially as someone in a management position, were absolutely horrible and severely lacking. A manager should be able to communicate effectively, take initiative, and make a genuine effort to help resolve a customer's problem. Based on my experience, I genuinely don't understand how someone with such poor customer service and leadership skills is in a management position.

I needed corn and a fella was stocking it. He was just that perfect amount of friendly and enjoying doing his job. The produce really seemed extra fresh. The self check setup is way better than many other stores and even the parking lot was far less of a mess. I had a lot of errands that day so something like actually getting an ADA spot is a welcome change when you experience enough stops where this is not the case and I was already exhausted.

I knew good things were coming when the cashier saw me coming from 20 feet away and said "Good Morning!" and I found some amazing beer deals around the corner. This Grocery Outlet seems to have the best selection of "non grocery" items I have seen such as laundry, tire, household goods, amazing candles I've never seen before, baking goods...the list goes on! I scored some killer quality cookie sheets for $5.99 each. I did not even allow myself into the wine section this trip - but I have a hunch that is pretty good too. If you haven't stopped in yet to explore, you are missing out.

On a recent visit here it is still a special place worth visiting and supporting. Kate, who works in bulk, was friendly and helpful. I ended up picking up some goji berries in bulk, harmless coconut water to hydrate the walkabout in the sun, and some medjool dates rolled in coconut with a sliced date on top. They have a great variety of everything from flowers, to heaps in bulk including: numerous whole grains, to various local coffee beans, almonds, and even reishi mushrooms in bulk. I try to eat a lot of whole grains. Quinoa is a staple of mine in San Francisco for it cooks fast, is high in protein, and just make sure to rinse first. 20 min it is done. For produce they had amazing heirloom tomatoes in a variety of colors, avocado, and heaps of greens which are a favorite of mine. It's not a grocery store where you'd do all of your weekly shopping; it's a corner store where you pop in for a chocolate bar or an ingredient you forgot. The selection is decent, but it's a tiny store and the prices are astronomical. One would have to be very "new Portland" to do their regular shopping here. That's not my problem with the place, though. It serves its purpose just fine. My problem is with the staff, who have never once been friendly or even nice to me. My experiences have ranged from vaguely hostile to mildly annoyed at my presence to total apathy. I don't need the person checking me out to jump for joy at doing so, but I also don't want to feel like an intruder or annoyance for trying to buy a can of cider. It's at the point where I almost dread going in even for a brief interaction. I wish Alberta had better alternatives for a corner store.
