John had handled our taxes for over eleven years, consistently providing adequate service without any issues. In February 2025, he emailed us the usual list of required documents to begin processing our return. As we've done for over a decade, we uploaded everything to the designated folder on his website. Then--nothing. After receiving no response, we called and emailed multiple times with no reply. Eventually, my husband drove to John's office, only to find a different business had moved in. We even left messages at his home, but still heard nothing. We've tried to give him the benefit of the doubt--perhaps he's ill or something more serious--but at the very least, we expected some sort of update on his website or voicemail. Our experience with Engelbert Tax Services began wonderfully. John was incredibly helpful and responsive. However, we recently received a notice that one of our tax filings that John handled for us had an error. This is when we have received silence in response to our phone calls and e-mails requesting some clarification on the error. We have still not received a response and are paying back taxes with penalties associated. read more

John is a nice guy however, in 2013 John failed to file both my state and IRS taxes though he completed them and told me they had been flied. A year later (even after paying my taxes), I owe over $1,000 in penalty fees because of this mistake. Furthermore, after filing for an extension and then getting my info to John in 2014, he didn't return numerous phone calls or emails for a full month after the deadline which also cost me hundreds of dollars in penalty fees. Additionally, he never even completed my taxes for 2014. John is a nice guy but if you want someone to take care of your taxes, I highly recommend Marlene Romanazzi in Visalia. Her people did what John couldn't do, and they did it in less than a week. We've been working with John since he was working with the IRS. We moved all of our business and personal tax and accounting to him, and, have never been happier. He's dealt with IRS, State Board of Equalization, and EDD on past tax issues. Helped us get set up so that those issues are now in the past. However, I do feel confident that the long-term would be as good as the recent experience. John was easy to work with, very friendly, personable and professional. John can possibly save you more on taxes because he takes the time to research any questionable deduction. He assumes nothing and makes sure the tax code is addressing your situation. He goes as far as recommending things you can do yourself saving the additional fee if he were to do it for you. Whether you save a lot or not, you will know John was accurate and did the best for you he can. He is a very personable guy too, once he can push himself away from the computer. We've had CPAs do our taxes before that never asked or suggested anything beyond what can be filled out on the form. John explains things as he goes. This is not a paper mill. read more

John is a very nice guy but he won't take ownership of his mistakes. I told him that I want my refund direct deposited and sent him my bank info. He submitted it as a check. Annoying but not a huge deal. I probably would still go back next year if he had just said 'whoops, my bad.' But after I left him a voicemail asking what happened, he left me a voicemail saying that I told him during our first meeting that I didn't want the IRS to have my account info. Which is silly because I do direct deposit every year. But At this point I just assumed he got our conversation confused with another client. Still not a big deal. So I left another voicemail explaining that and hoping that he could make a correction and have it direct deposited like we had discussed(not sure if that's possible but it was a question I would have liked answered by the guy I paid to do my taxes). But he won't return my phone calls or emails now. Again, John is a nice guy but not very professional. For the amount of money I spent and the attention my return got, I think I'm better off going to H&R Block. They spend more time with you and ask more questions. read more

If I could, I wouldn't even rate this company a 1 star. John may seem like he knows what he's talking about but he far from does. My husband's business and our personal taxes were given back to us on the day that they were due. We would try to contact him on several occasions and he would return our calls a month later. That was our first mistake by staying with him because I think communication is so important. We lived in Fresno at the time so we were able to go to his office. We ended up moving to San Diego for my job so that is why we depending on the phone and email. The month that our taxes were due, he never returned any of our calls and just emailed our taxes that day. That's not even the big issue. When we got our taxes back, we owed a ton of money and it just didn't look right and at that point we knew we needed to see another CPA. We go to another CPA and he literally looked at our taxes and was so perplexed. The correction that was made was over 30,000 dollars. We owed way less than this. We take full responsibility for not listening to our heart and finding someone different when he wasn't returning our calls. I think John thought that we were young and stupid because at the time my husband was going through a business transition. I think he took advantage because he thought he could. How do you not care about screwing someone over? How are your moral and values so bad? With that being said, how you treat people tells all and integrity is everything. Maybe he didn't know what he was doing and he could have simply said that. I do not recommend this company and if you had your taxes done by John, please get a second look.
