It was a fairly pleasant day in early September so I'm not convinced having the heating on full blast was totally necessary, and my sister kept accidentally catching her arm on it. That's not much of a complaint though, just an odd observation. I love the look and feel of the place, especially the drawings on the far wall. I mentioned to my sister that I thought it was affiliated with Federal in Manchester. She asked one of the staff who told her they're totally independent of each other but that the owner of Tamper helped the guys from Federal set up. This really shows in the decor, atmosphere and menu of both places. We each ordered a flat white. When they arrived they were lovely to look at, and delicious too. My sister ordered the Big Ozzie breakfast, and I ordered the smashed avocado on sourdough with poached eggs and halloumi. My dish was really beautifully presented. It came with a sweet chilli cucumber salsa, which is not necessarily something I would have chosen to go with the dish, but worked really well. My sister really enjoyed her breakfast as well. I tried a bit of the sausage patty and the hash brown and they were both delicious, really nicely seasoned. We didn't have any cake as we were fit to burst but there was a huge selection and everything looked lovely. I would definitely return and would recommend.

But here it did and the chap who brought my coffee over confirmed it, which was kind. The coffee was good, the ambience laid back and the feeling was of a haven from a bustling street and city. Eventually, I left my regal armchair to get back and on. This café sets a fine standard for competitors to meet.

After having a good mooch around these, we arrived at Jameson's, which greets you with a suitably old fashioned look and feel. Staff are smart- male staff wear bow ties (but not necessarily black or white), there is a huge selection of cakes on the counter and it really looks like a 'proper' tea room if you know what I mean. We had an afternoon tea- they have a few varieties but all based around sandwiches, scones and cake. The traditional version allows you to choose only one sandwich filling but the others provide four, plus other additions. I had the traditional, plus a mini bottle of prosecco and my sister had the Splendid, which had a range of sandwiches (cucumber and Brie, prawn, ham and mustard and something else). It was presented beautifully and I loved the mismatched crockery. You get four finger sandwiches, one large scone with jam and cream (or curd with the Splendid)- we could choose from plain, fruit or chocolate orange, and you can choose your cake from the selection on the counter. These are generally sponges and loaf type cakes rather than dainties. The tea selection was great and additionally there are several kinds of champagne and prosecco on the menu, but only served by the bottle (!). There are three mini 20cl proseccos if you just want a glass. As usual after the scone I couldn't actually manage any of my raspberry and white chocolate Victoria sponge, but it was packaged up for us to take home. Staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful, food was great and the menu seemed good value- the most expensive afternoon tea is £80 for two but includes a whole bottle of their £50 Pol Roget Champagne plus all the best cakes and sandwiches. Maybe another time... Jameson's is well set up for small children with wipes and other useful things in the loo (which has a changing mat), plus several high chairs tucked around the corner.

My double espresso was smooth, fruity and roasted nicely - came with water without asking. I was expecting the nitro brew to be foamier and smoother (like the one I had a few months ago at La Colombe) but it was bitter, and almost carbonated. Still good, just not what I was expecting. Though I don't think I'll be back in Sheffield anytime soon, if I were to return, I'd probably give Steam Yard another go and try a different drink.
