Less than a year old, this beer store has already made a name for itself among the beer elitists in Chile. Started by fellow gringos, Beervana on Los Leones, has an incredible selection of both international and national beers. In fact, they have one fridge of US-beers, one of European beers (from the UK, Belgium and Germany) and one of Chilean microbrews. My favorites include their brews imported from some of California's best breweries such as Ballast Point, Green Flash, Coronado, Anderson Valley and Devil's Canyon. The owners, Ben and Perry, have the patience of a saint and take the time to explain (even to the most novice of beer drinkers) what is what and how you can distinguish between the brews. Definitely worth the time to come by and check out the beer options for your next asado. Also, if you fear these artesian beers might break the bank, keep an eye out as they always seem to have promotions on something (last week it was on Groupon but they also post it on FB).

We had heard about Honesto Mike's through a friend and decided to check it out before visiting a friend in the hospital. We thought we were arriving early (within 1 hour of opening), but even though we were on gringo time, the place was already packed and we were third on the wait list. As others have pointed out, Beervana next door is also a creation of the same owner and we were told that we could take our receipt next door for a discount on beer. Whoohoo! The food is amazing. They actually have fried pickles ("frickles") on the menu, though I opted not to order them because our server indicated they are on the sweet side (like everything else in this country, sigh...a croissant is NOT a donut, Chile!). Instead, we got the onion rings and were not disappointed. Even though they use red onions, which is somewhat unusual, the batter is exquisite and we had to ask for extra dipping sauce (it's like tartar sauce) because my husband thinks that onion rings are just a vehicle for getting sauce in his mouth. When we first sat down, we were greeted and placed our beer orders. Since we had walked a long way, I was very thirsty and ordered a pint glass of whatever was on #19 that day (there's a huge chalkboard that looks like a calendar with each of their beers on tap listed). I was surprised to see the very-USA influence on everything here from the decor, to music, to beer and food. The people next to us were drinking their beers out of Sierra Nevada pint glasses--something I haven't seen in about a year. Definitely made me feel right at home. The beer was delicious as was everything else. One oddity was that we wanted to order a burger and fries to go so we could take it to our friend at the hospital, but our server told us it was not possible. WHAT!?! We felt terrible because we'd been texting our friend photos of the menu so he could escape having to eat yet another hospital meal during his long-term stay. Our server explained that the burgers are so tall and huge that they do not fit in a to-go box and it's just not their policy (take-out food is a really big thing in Santiago, and I can see how that would be a slippery slope for them). We artfully crafted a simple work-around: We ordered 3 meals and when one of them arrived on the plate, our server immediately took it to the back, broke it down, and boxed it for us. Voilà! When we arrived to our American friend's hospital room, he was overjoyed and pretty much devoured the burger in 30 seconds, just as the nurse came in and jokingly scolded him for eating non-hospital food. We will DEFINITELY be coming back here again and bringing our friends. It is a shame they don't do takeout, but as other Yelpers have noted, the kitchen is just too tiny. Honestly (get it?), I kind of like that this place is so small and hard to get into. I don't know that I would want them to recreate it elsewhere or expand. It's perfect just the way it is--blasting heavy metal in your face and all.

They always have a wide selection of music and jukebox, if you want a quieter evening I would recommend sitting outside. They have pitchers of terremotos (ice cream, wine, and fernet), piscolas and beer to drink. To eat they have french fries, churriana, and empanadas AKA perfect bar food. I started coming here when studying abroad and it has always been my go-to pub ever since. It is nothing fancy, but the laid back ambiance, 80's rocker-esque clientele and the great service keeps me coming back for more. Bar La Nona is juxtaposed between Pio Nono's grunge and Patio Bella Vista's exclusivity, making it a very entertaining people watching spot - especially during the summer time. They offer seating both outside as well as inside. What the inside seating lacks in outside entertainment Pio Nono is known to offer (such as random musicians, parades and artisans) it makes up for in an awesome Juke box which is almost always playing 80's and 90's rock. It's a must go for a national beer and chorillana.

On a hot summer night this week, a group of colleagues made a plan to meet for happy hour + dinner…read moreat the Geo Pub. I had never been before even though it is a stone's throw from home. Much to my delight, the fish and chips were pretty good and even the beer was tasty. The down sides: 1) Music was too loud for covid. Stay with me here...we are in the midst of a pandemic and they take your temperature and make you use hand sanitizer before being seated. They don't allow food sharing (see #2 below). Yet, with the blaring loud music, they encourage the very unsafe and unsanitary practice of forcing unmasked patrons and wait staff to get unusually close to each other in order to hear and be heard. I could feel my neighbor's breath and even spit hit me because of this and it was kind of awful. 2) By not allowing plate sharing, they (and the Ministry of Health) actually encourage much more unsafe practices. Like other restaurants, the Geo Pub enforces the "no plate-sharing" rule. But this is an Irish pub. When one drinks beer, they snack. They nosh. They nibble. And all those sharing items are still on the menu but the waitstaff does not bring extra plates. Other nearby restaurants such as Cabrera recognize this dilemma and so they portion out the food and serve it individually to patrons. Geo Pub could easily do the same but they haven't thought that far outside of the box, apparently. So instead, we all shared ceviche, fries, calamari, pizza, fish and chips, and peanut-battered chicken fingers. 3) Glasses were dirty and wine was mixed up. Who goes to an Irish pub and orders wine?! I know, I know. Yet, it's on the menu and we're in Chile, not Ireland, so wine is actually the drink of choice for many patrons. I started with beer but when one of my colleagues opted for wine, I switched. He ordered a chardonnay and I a sauvignon blanc. When the server brought the wine, they were mixed up. This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but see #1 above regarding the current worldwide pandemic. He took a sip of mine and knew it was not right. When we swapped, I realized the glass itself was pretty dirty. It was caked with a hazy layer of something all over the stem, base, and much of the cup itself. 4) Finally, whatever you do, don't order the guacamole. Look, I know what you're thinking: Why is an Irish place selling all these non-Irish things like pizza and guacamole? And, Why would anyone order this? I can't answer the first, but we had a vegan friend in the group and he saw "guacamole" on the menu and, like any normal human, assumed it would be a cup or bowl of normal, human-sized guacamole. WRONG! It was two ketchup-dipping saucers that equated to about 2 tablespoons of guacamole on the side of a plate piled high with corn chips. This menu item is clearly mislabeled. It should read "Corn chips. Condiment-size side of guacamole." Given the above and the servers' overall lack of awareness (e.g., taking away an empty pint glass without asking if the guest would like a refill, or not noticing when only half the table has drinks), I would give this place a solid 3. It's covid and they're trying, but some things are just standard or need to be considered in a pandemic. Will I be back? Yes...after all, where else in this city can I get fish an chips?
