This book completely changed the way I look at training. Before reading it, I realized I had been…read moreapproaching my workouts all wrong--focusing on the wrong lifts and not really understanding how they translated to performance on the field. This book broke everything down clearly and showed me how to train the right way for baseball, not just to "get stronger" in the gym. Another huge takeaway was nutrition. I thought I had a decent idea of how to eat, but I wasn't fueling myself properly for peak performance. The strategies in this book made it simple to understand what to eat, when to eat, and how to recover the right way. The section on mental training was also eye-opening. I had been neglecting the mental side of the game, and this book gave me the tools to approach practice, competition, and even setbacks with the right mindset. There's a ton of practical information in here--specific training programs and step-by-step guidance--that makes it easy to put into action and see results quickly. My only regret is not finding this book sooner. Thank you so much for putting together such a valuable resource for baseball players.

It's not cheap, but it's life-changing…read more I'll be honest, Pilates lessons are my biggest expense after rent and my student loans. But the amount my body has changed since I began lessons here a year and a half ago has convinced me that classical Pilates is entirely worthwhile. My athletic background is mostly running and gym workouts, but I'm on my feet all day, and so I was interested in improving my posture to avoid back problems down the road. My back was extremely arched, and I was starting to have problems after I walked for long distances. I work mostly with Adrianna, but I've worked with pretty much everyone in the studio. The newer instructors are sometimes a gamble, but it really depends on what you're looking for in a workout. Don't write the studio off just because you don't get good vibes from your first instructor. I prefer Adrianna because she's committed to Joseph Pilates' vision in its purest form, without all the frills and fancy stuff. I also enjoy working with Regina, Clare, Sara(h?), and Chris. I need to point out that I was anxious to start Pilates because I was worried the studio would be populated with stick-thin, beautiful, pretentious, rich former dancers and trophy wives. There are a few, but most people are down-to-earth and average. Because you work with mostly the same people each week, getting to know the folks I work out with has been one of my favorite parts of Pilates. After you start with a few private sessions, you can move on to semi-privates and mat classes. I stayed with privates for quite a while, and I'm glad I did because I feel like I have a much better grasp on the reasons behind why the exercises are performed the way they are. I also feel much more independent in my semi-privates and mat classes, which gives me more bang for my buck and makes up for the initial money-sink. The front desk staff is generally friendly, and their bookkeeping/scheduling is always spot on. On a practical note, their facilities are clean and the showers are helpful for when I'm done with my morning or pre-dinner classes! I've also done Pilates at various studios in Michigan and Hawaii, and I would strongly recommend that even if you don't come to Metropolitan Pilates, you look into a classical Pilates studio. Enjoy, and don't be afraid to get started!

I like working out. I like sweating, I like my heart beating fast, and I like being able to eat…read morejust a little bit extra. I am always up for trying a new way to exercise. I know Pilates is popular but I was never one that wanted to do DVDs. If I was going to try this I want to use those reformer machines that sort of look like torture devices. My chance came when my mom and I were at a silent auction. Nothing offered sparked either of our interest then I saw a three private lessons package and begged my mom to bid on it. To my delight she won. Soon I was on my way to strengthening and lengthening my body. I had to leave a message to make an appointment but was immediately called back. I didn't have an instructor preference since I had never been there before and with the time and date that worked for me Kelsi ended up being the instructor I was paired with. Metropolitan Pilates is located in University Village next to the Gene Juarez salon. It is open and airy, clean, and bright. The front desk woman was very nice and pointed me in the direction of the locker room. Towels and a hair dryer are provided in the locker room and locks are there for your convenience. After I dropped off my things I made my way to the waiting area. Kelsi, with a genuine smile and a hand extended, met me. We immediately got on the machines. Kelsi was patient with me as I typically run, lift weights, and do boot camp classes which is the complete opposite of this regime and I found it hard, at first, to utilize different parts of my body to do moves I had one before. Lots of extensions and leg lifts and bending and rolling and slowly engaging muscles. All fun and harder than they looked but the challenge was worth it. Every time I left my session with Kelsi I stood a little taller and my muscles were stretched and longer. Although I wasn't sweating buckets or panting uncontrollably I felt that I got a great work out just a different type which I later realized, my body desperately needed. I recommend Metropolitan Pilates to anyone. The studio is lovely the staff is friendly, encouraging, and knowledgeable. I had a great experience and I hope to come back soon!

I've never been a "gym guy". I grew up thinking I was too small to be athletic until I rediscovered…read moresports as a young adult. So when I say, "I love this gym", know that it's not coming from somejock who loved working out...and I do love this gym. I had been searching for a form of exercise to replace the activity and community of a team sport after I suffered a ruptured Achilles. I found GLSC through a free trial and had no idea it was going to change the way I thought and felt about fitness. GLSC workouts were the highlight of my week, and over the course of a year, I saw my skills, strength, and enjoyment improved significantly. Here's why I love Green Lake Strength and conditioning: 1) The coaches: Shout out to Coaches Hannah, Zeyab, and Jonathan, who were my first and primary coaches. They are the perfect balance between motivating and moderating, helping you gauge your skill/strength limits and safely push them. They are excellent at teaching form and technique, and they brought my high-school-level understanding of weightlifting up to par. Despite having an injured Achilles shoulder, their guidance helped ensure that I never injured myself (and in fact reduced my pain through strengthening and increasing range of motion) even while greatly increasing my strength and endurance. They can help you improve whether you're a beginner or an expert. 2) The community: GLSC has a vibrant community. Members get to know each other but not in an in-your-face sort of way - you can be a casual weekly member or you can join your fellow members on unofficial hikes and official BBQs and gatherings. There's a very wide range of ages and experiences in these classes, and they didn't make me feel "dumb" or out of place. Classes have been kept to 12 people max, which after experiencing much smaller and larger classes, 12 is a great number - not too crowded but not awkwardly empty. You also get to know each other through the infamous question of the day - just lean into it, it'll be fun, I promise. ;) 3) Facilities/programming: After trying several other gyms, I can confidently say that none of them quite match up to GLSC's programming. GLSC excels because of the three distinct segments of their strenght & conditioning workouts: Warm-ups, skill/strength-building, and WOD. The warm-ups aren't just stretching and jumping jacks - they are specifically design to engage the muscle groups that you'll be using, they help reinforce the techniques needed to complete the rest of the workout of the day, and they get your heart pumping. Other gyms I've experienced rush this part or do the bare minimum. The skill/strength segment is where I learned the most over the last year because they remove the speed element and focus on quality over quantity. Again, the other gyms I've experienced rush this part and either skip teaching altogether or push you into a higher pace too soon. They also offer a wide range of modifications and equipment to meet each person's level of skill and strength. The WODs vary between low, medium, and high metabolic conditioning and are varied in type and style so you're never bored. There's no "leg day" or "arm day" - your entire body will be exhausted every day. They oddly fill you with both a sense of dread and excitement, knowing how hard they will be but also how good you'll feel afterwards. And for what it's worth, the coaches have generally good tastes in music - good balance between pumping you up but not obnoxious techno. A note about cost: It's expensive. But I look at value for cost, not low cost. The quality of the coaching and programming alone is easily worth it in my eyes. Add to that a clean, high-quality facility, fun community, and personal results and I was happy to pay the higher cost. I loved this gym...but sadly had to give up my membership when my workplace moved away. I'm still searching for a new gym, forever comparing it to GLSC and still not finding its equal. Congrats, Nate and team, for building this wonderful gym and community! Hit me up if you want to expand to S. Seattle!
