There is certainly a specific type of person who could benefit from seeing Dr. Bayless, such as a person who resonates with old-fashioned ways of thinking and who needs encouragement to switch to a new field in which they have always excelled, or to quit their job to become a stay-at-home mother. However, based on the lack of assessment that I received during my visit, Dr. Bayless seems like a poor choice for people who are seeking counseling to help them change their behavior. I had been to a psychiatrist a few days before my visit with Dr. Bayless, and had received a tentative diagnosis. When I shared this with Dr. Bayless, he refused to believe me. I then talked about my symptoms for maybe five minutes, after which Dr. Bayless told me there was nothing wrong with me. When I asked whether he had enough information to support this claim, he told me that certain people are only good at certain things, and therefore any "symptoms" experienced by me did not actually exist. This is certainly not impossible; however, instead of actually asking me questions that could verify whether my symptoms were false, we both became sidetracked and spent the remaining fifty minutes of the session discussing Dr. Bayless' personal and political beliefs. While I personally enjoyed the opportunity to speak with someone whose views were so different from mine, I would have appreciated my problems being taken more seriously, and also feel somewhat cheated due to the vast difference between the services expected and the services rendered. In my opinion, Dr. Bayless and his staff could definitely have done a better job of communicating the unique viewpoint and methods of this office ahead of time.

Marla follows a Cognitive Behavioral therapy approach and is very well-versed in the works of Dr. David Burns and Dr. Brene Brown.
