I tried Empower Yoga for a few weeks during their discounted monthly membership trial period. Absolutely loved the classes I took and there seemed to be a good sense of community between the instructors and students. Class offerings and time options are also really good for the area with lots of morning classes and good variety between yoga, Pilates and weight based classes. Classes are challenging too which is so important to me. My only downfall with this place and why I can't be a permanent member is I can't get over the fact that there are no mirrors in the studio!! I understand this may be common for traditional yoga studios but if you offer these type of weighted classes how can there not be a mirror to check form. Personally a mirror helps me make that mind/body/muscle connection way more but maybe I'm alone in that. read more

I love this place! I always go to community yoga nights when Nan is teaching, she's the best! The studio is really nice, if anything a little cramped when there are a lot of people. She's super helpful and encouraging, especially if you're a beginner and have never taken a yoga class in your life. She even gave me an electrolyte mix for my water one day when she noticed I was a little fatigued. I can't really vouch for the other instructors or classes, but she's really the best. I was in town for the holidays and looking for a studio that offered hot power flow. I stumbled across Empower and decided to give it a try. My first class was great! They were so welcoming and even let me borrow a mat and towel for free since it was my first time. The temperature was definitely hot but I felt so refreshed after! I liked how there weren't mirrors and it was a non judgmental environment for if you needed to modify a pose or go into child's pose. Next time I visit I will be sure to stop in again. read more

Went to Empower Yoga for the 1st time tonight. I took the 8-9:15pm Monday community yoga class with Carol. Although I've been doing yoga for 5 years this was my 1st time trying hot yoga. At 1st I didn't like the heat at all, I felt like a dog in a hot car. However, as Carol gently led the class I became more & more enthralled. By the time I left I felt a sense of full body relaxation and detoxification! I will be coming back. I can tell I'll sleep peacefully tonight. read more

Very mixed reviews from my first week going. I went to a Saturday beginner power yoga class which was excellent. The teacher was encouraging and knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere was very welcoming. The temperature and music were very calming. I also went to the Wednesday night community class and the teacher was awful - a real bully. If I was closer to the door and wasn't afraid she would have yelled at me, I would have left. The class was jam packed. The teacher talked through the entire class, including the meditation. She played a lot of pop music as noted by other reviewers which gave it a very different feel from the Saturday class. But my main complaint was the teacher - she criticized people for drinking water and for resting. What she was saying went against everything I've ever heard in yoga. I'll go back to the Saturday class, but not to the community classes as long as it's the same teacher. It's a shame as they are a good deal at only $5. read more

Love this place. Clean, professional, and nice warm atmosphere. Some instructors play loud pop music during the practice which I am not a fan of but when even the skin between my toes is pouring out sweat, that is the last thing on my mind. Finally having rounded up the courage to actually go and try Yoga, after being goaded onwards by friends for some time, Empower's Beginners Power Yoga class was seriously all I ever hoped for in a first-time Yoga experience. Normal classes are held in a 95 degree room, but the beginner's class is held at 80 degrees...and I was plenty warm enough just maneuvering myself around. The instructor, Susan, was kind and explained everything so well the first time I never had to ask any dumb questions like "Which way should my feet/head/fingertips" be pointing, and she also emphasized the exploration of body, rather than a stringent focus on perfect technique. Now, that's not to say that was ignored; she helped me shift positions a few times and as soon as she did, I could feel what I was doing wrong (yeah, it BURNS when you do it right...) and definitely worked with people's skill and flexibility levels. We went through each step of a Sun Salutation, tree pose, Warrior I & II, and some additional practices that I can't remember the names of. I loved the center itself as well; you walk into a nice front room, where you pay, sign-in (15$ (12$ student) for 90 + 75 minute classes, 10 (8$ student) for 60 + 45 Min. classes); while you wait, there's nice benches, magazines, and racks of merchandise to browse through. Across the length of the whole room are French Doors, which are covered by a curtain while the regular Power class is being conducted, open for additional light during the Beginners class. The studio itself is spacious (for what I know, anyways!) though my guess is not as big as some of the ones in Boston, with cubbies holding blocks, rope and room for valuables. All in all, a great experience for beginners and judging by the streams of people pouring out of the room before I went it, popular with the experienced set as well. read more

I took my husband here for the community class (described on schedule as taught by a new teacher, thus the $5). The teacher said she had been teaching there 2 years, so she wasn't necessarily "new", but I don't think I would call her experienced. I feel like it would have been appropriate to give at least a couple physical cues and corrections in poses other than downward facing dog- for example- my husband continuously kept putting his back heel down when she cued for crescent lunge, and the woman next to me seemed to have no idea how to align herself in extended side angle, which is kind of dangerous when moving through the poses one breath to one movement... and then throwing yourself repeatedly down into a "swooping" chaturanga.The students ranged from beginner to advanced, as most all levels community classes do, and there were about 20 students in the room, which I believe was heated above 95- I know what 95 feels like because I am a teacher myself and I teach power vinyasa style classes. I know that it's baptiste style, as most studios in new england tend to lean towards- but for a community class I think it would be appropriate to pause and give alignment cues through the first sun salutation, and the first surya namaskar b (the one where you do warrior and utkatasana) - so that students don't spend the next 45 minutes of standing postures moving through incorrect alignment, and doing very bad chaturangas. Longevity of students and injury prevention is key to client retention and student's success afterall! I also didn't care for some of the instructor's music selection, it was very loud, and her timing for savasana was a little off, 5 minutes minimum is ideal. but again.... I only went to one class and I'm sure there are many teachers here that are more experienced and would provide a well-rounded, safe and attentive class. I also found it odd that the class was aligned facing the same direction, so that students who were in the row on the left walking in had to face a wall immediately in front of them, rather than facing towards the center of the room, or just having the row 3-4 feet back so there is room to go into warrior 3/half moon, etc. read more

I have to agree with Shannon, this is the only yoga studio to go to in the North Shore. I grew up in the south shore and lived in Boston for years where I was an avid yoga student and teacher at Open Doors Power Yoga and Baron Baptiste Power yoga, and when i moved to Salem I was seriously bummed at the lack of options for HOT yoga. Empower has great teachers, is reasonably priced and has classes early am all the way up to pretty late in the evening which is perfect for my hectic work/school schedule. read more

I went to a Community session at a recommendation of a friend - and happy I did! Nice & calm atmosphere; folks are very friendly and not at all pretentious. I managed to drag my husband the next week, and although he's completely new to yoga he enjoyed it and plans on coming back with me. Looking forward to lots of hot sessions this winter! read more

This is hands down the best true vinyasa flow yoga studio in the area. It's always an incredible workout and I've actually only gone to the community classes which are such a great deal ($5). I do sometimes think the room is too hot, especially in the summer, but maybe that's just how hot yoga is supposed to be. Lately there has been a lot of classes with assist that really help open up the body and make it feel extra good afterwards. Very powerful yet so soothing and relaxing. My friend started dragging me along with her to the yoga classes here over a year ago. I was NOT excited by the prospect of doing 100 degree yoga in a room full of other sweaty people, but I eventually warmed (ha) up to it and now I go at least once a week. The instructors are awesome! If they see you struggling in a pose, they'll come over to try to talk you to and ease you into a position where you won't hurt yourself. They're very helpful, very nice people who are more than willing to share their wealth of yoga and wellness knowledge! read more

Classes are great when it's Claire, Gregor, or Elizabeth. The other instructors I've taken classes with BLAST bad pop and country music. What says moving meditation like an instructor shouting asanas over bad music that is way too loud??! It made more sense when I heard the owner is a former aerobics instructor. I stopped going when they increased the rate to $18 drop in. Absurd. That rate makes yoga inaccessible to anyone who is not a wealthy and covered in lululemon. The only other place I've seen $18 rates is Manhattan. C'mon- a strip mall in Beverly with no showers is not worth $18/class. Especially when you are forced to listen to someone else's bad playlist during your meditation time. read more

When I've tried Bikram yoga before, I hated it so I was a bit nervous about trying out the hot yoga at Empower but I love it there. I've only taken classes with Tricia but she's such a great teacher. She's very down to earth. She keeps an eye on students and corrects by speaking to the whole class rather than singling anyone out. I'm not terribly good but once you start the class, you never feel self conscious. You just feel amazing. read more

This place is unbelievable, how awesome it is. I have practiced yoga in San Francisco and Portland, Oregon and other cities ith amazing yogis, and this place is among the top studios. Right here in little ol' Beverly! yea! Instructors are amazing, professional and accessible -- Elizabeth is tough but really helpful with body corrections, and I feel that with Tricia as my teacher, I don't need a therapist! Great workout! Excellent instructors. Very happy with my Empower experiences. I find it a little expensive. But good Yoga tends to be pricey. Being a beginner I felt slightly intimidated out of the gate. But felt at home and safe fast. If you are checking out different Yoga establishments you should check Empower out.
