I had gotten a cheap diabetic awareness ribbon tattoo in 2008 from a small shop in CT to defy my ex, who didn't like tattoos. My husband suggested that I get it covered up by one of the best...so I went to Tommy Helm in January! Not only did he completely cover it, but he made it so much more meaningful. My tiny ribbon is gone and now I have a tattoo to represent my Type 1 Diabetes and my diabetic alert dog. This is his exact pawprint and the rest was free-handed! I got my first tattoo at Empire State when they were located in Oceanside over 10 yrs ago. I love these people and this business. On this particular day, I did not have an appointment but my friend did (I was accompanying her). Last minute I decided to get a tattoo and they squeezed me in. The tattoo was simple and took about 10 minutes. This is my third Empire State tattoo and I'll never give it a second thought to get inked there. Upon my first visit I was truly taken of how beautiful the studio is set up; super clean and airy with interesting decor and cool easy going staff. I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Marvin Silva! Amazing artist and person. I had so many ideas and he worked patiently with me so that we curated all my interests into one piece. I had my calf tattooed by Brittany in memory of my mom. I met with her to discuss the tattoo I want, show her the inspiration pictures, and she gave me her feedback and suggestions. I truly thought about her suggestions however wrote her with my clear instructions on what I had pictured for my tattoo. I showed up to my appointment beyond excited it. Brittany was so thorough, gentle, and she is such a sweetheart. She perfectly captured my vision and brought it to life. I cannot wait to go back to see her for more tattoos! So happy I found this place! I recently got a piece on my shoulder from Jared and it's absolutely stunning. I couldn't be happier with it. I went in for a consult and gave him a few ideas of what I wanted and he was super receptive and threw in some suggestions that ended up being fabulous. I love that all the artists have other mediums, as well. They're really in it for the right reasons, not to just bang out generic pieces that you could get at any shop. Everyone's really friendly and outgoing, too. My first time in, Tommy came over and thanked me for coming in and we chatted for a couple of minutes. It made the experience so much better that I was joking and laughing with the artists instead of lying there focusing on the pain for three and a half hours. It has taken me a long time to write this review because I was hoping I wouldn't have to. After several failed attempts to contact I am very disappointed and frustrated with this shop. I have called every day for a month and also have emailed. No where does it say that the shop is closed or on vacation. When you call the shop you get a voicemail that says they are open daily. Their website says "EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE" and I am not finding this. I loved this shop and spent many many hours in it but I am beyond frustrated and annoyed that there has been no contact for an issue that I am having. Hopefully I can change this review to a positive one if and when they reach out. read more

Their artists all seem to specialize in different styles, but each extremely talented and hand picked by Tommy Helm the shop owner. Been coming here to Marvin Silva for probably 3 years now (I know Im late with a review but Im new to yelp) and there isn't anything he can't do. The shop is definitely getting immensely popular now, since Tommy Helm appeared on Ink Master, and happened placed 2nd overall! Super clean, fun, and inviting shop. You do get what you pay for, and here is not cheap. I flew into NY from Minnesota for the main purpose of getting tattooed. I was fortunate enough to have an appointment with previously scheduled with Marvin Silva... one of the finest artists and all around coolest people I have ever met. Marvin worked with me on my concept and came up with a design that far exceeded my expectations. I sat for 2 consecutive days as he worked on my sleeve. I couldn't be happier with my tattoo and my time at the shop. In addition to remarkable tattooing, the shop has a very cool atmosphere and the gallery space was filled with great pieces from various mediums. Shop manager Jeff was also playing some killer music so it was very comfortable during my sessions. I was watching the other artists at work during my sessions and everyone in this shop is very skilled and brings their originality to the table. I witnessed a lot of great work. I don't think ive ever written one review in my life but had to make an account to do so for this shop and my experience so far here. About a week ago I had a short phone convo with Nick (I think shop manager?) about what I was coming in for. For starters he was the sweetest most accommodating person which that in itself made me not even look further at other shops. The next day I spoke with Bobby on the phone (artist) about what it is we were going to do to recreate/fix a really lousy half sleeve that I thought there was no saving. Today was my first session with him and I'm completely mind blown at the work that was done and the progress that was made. I had very little hope about saving this tattoo but Bobby (as well as everyone else in the shop) made me feel so comfortable and confident that he would infact completely turn the tattoo around. The care he had for his work and my body were unmatched. I even overheard other artists speaking to their clients and every single person was just so personable, funny and kind.. shops can really be intimidating especially for new comers and this place was everything but that. I am SO unbelievably happy I found Empire State Studio (and Bobby) to continue on with my sleeve and all my future tattoos. I recommend every single thing about this shop! read more

I liked the work but since I was a tattoo virgin I didn't know how to bring up the subject of price and they never mentioned it until he was done so I was a little surprised by the price but the shop was clean, and everything was sterile and professional so overall I'm happy with what I got but I think I'll try someplace else for my next one. read more
