    10 cream puffs for $5
    Sharon H.

Who doesn't love a Hong Kong waffle with a custard filling? The smell of Hong Kong waffles bring me joy. I've seen videos of this place, but didn't expect to stumble across it while walking through the Chinatown Friday Night Market. The ordering window is next to Emperor's Garden Cakes & Bakery. It can be easily missed and only caught our eye because there was a decent line. Despite the line, it moved quickly. Make sure to have cash ready. I paid A$5 for 10 mini puffs. They were fresh and piping hot. We gobbled these up in a few minutes.

Want a cheap dessert made fresh in Chinatown Sydney, then look no further than this place. There's usually a line, but it moves quickly. A little tip - before biting into these little puffs, wait a couple of minutes because the custard filling is hot. For the price, these little cream puffs are a good cheap eat.

Hot fresh cream puffs! Small quick order window. Don't be afraid of the line, it moves pretty fast. I asked if they have napkins and I got was quick impolite "NO". I guess it's a BYON kinda place. Anyways, cream puffs were a nice snack at a great price.

A combination of a donut hole stuffed with warm Boston Creme is what these famous Emperor's puffs taste like. 10 come in a box for $5 Aus. Pretty fresh & warm, great on a chilly day. Service was fast & friendly from the take-out window. The creme filling isn't quite Asian-tasting. Be warned that they don't start making the puffs until noon. And have seen lines during the busy season. Lots of traditional Chinese bakery too at roughly $3.50+ Aus/each. Conveniently located right near the base of the Chinatown gate.

We saw a long line while twice walking past this literal hole in the wall. Fortunately, the line moves relatively quickly so we could see what all the fuss was about. These pastries were so simple and yet so phenomenal. They reminded me of the warm manju we got in the subway in Myeongdong. Except the filling in this pastry was less sugary and had a thinner texture. Regardless it was perfection.

I decided to downgrade their rating by 1 star. I was hoping that their traditional bakeries had better selections. They are also quite expensive as well.

Delicious. Fresh. And cheap! The puffs are filled with custard and I have nothing bad to say! Definitely makes a great snack. The aroma alone makes you wanna visit and buy everything!

I decided to walk around Chinatown after eating at a few places and stumbled upon Emperor's Puff. They also own a Chinese bakery and restaurant that are all side by side. Emperor's Puff is a small takeout corner that specializes in cream puffs. I saw a massive line so decided to stop and see what all the fuss was about. It's cheap ($0.35 AUD for 1, $1.00 for 3 and $5.00 for 18) and fairly quick even with a queue. - Cream puffs ($1.00 AUD for 3) - they make them fresh so they come out scalding hot. The filling is decent but the puffs needed some texture and crispness to it. Alright but I didn't think they were that special. Most people were getting boxes of 18. Not sure why because once they cool down, they weren't as good. I'd probably try their bakery instead next time.

Usually in the evenings, the lines are very, very long in this cream puff window located in Chinatown. But come during an off hour, and you will see absolutely no line! The puffs are delicious and cheap, and no frills. Sometimes the lady is rude, and sometimes she isn't. Sometimes the puffs are perfect, and sometimes they are undercooked. But it's all part of the experience you expect from Chinatown. Cash only!

Highly recommend! We had no idea what the line was for when we walked by but thought, "a line this long must be worth it." So we hopped in. So glad we did! It was just small cream puffs but WOAH so delicious! We did the 3 puffs for a dollar deal and they were the perfect little snack. I hope we have the chance to swing by again before we leave!

We were walking around Chinatown and there was a huge line in front of Emperor's Puff. So without even thinking about it, we got in line! I mean, when in doubt, get into queue where the masses are! This is exactly what we did when we walked by the yogurt drink place around the corner as well! LOL! The heart of a true foodie! The line for Emperor's Puff moved quickly but there were times where the line stalled and we were wondering why.. welp, people left the window with boxes and boxes of puffs! Now we were excited cause they MUST be good if people bought so many of them! This place is right next to Emperor's Bakery and is just a window on the side of the bakery. Once we got to the front, we realized what the lag was. The machine was literally spitting out hot hot cream puffs as quickly as it could! We decided to get 6, cause we were already stuffed, and were glad we did. These cream puffs were piping hot and pretty small. The pastry was good, the cream wasn't overly sweet.. it was a nice little puff of surprise. We enjoyed it a lot and was glad we stood in line! Probably worth it to try, though I can't say I'd wait longer than 15 mins or so for them!

$5 for 10 puffs! Eat 'em while they're hot while you walk through Chinatown. The custard is just perfect.

Consistently good Cantonese bakery and fresh custard puffs. Really long opening hours with fresh bread baked all day.

I'm a foodie, NOT a shopper!…read more After walking around Sydney's CBD, we visited the famous Queen Victoria Building, a late 19th-century Romanesque Revival marketplace that is now a shopping mall filled with high-end boutiques and eateries. We crossed George Street to The Strand, where we were in search of the world-famous patisserie, Black Star Pastry. Although I don't use IG or FB, I heard about Black Star Pastry's Strawberry Watermelon Cake while reading an old New York Times article about this Australian patisserie, which declared this signature cake and most-requested cake as "The World's Most Instagrammed Cake." So, I made Black Star Pastry a destination during our pre-cruise stay in Sydney. We followed the directions posted on The Strand's directory to Black Star Pastry and ogled the artistically and attractively decorated cakes while zeroing in on the Strawberry Watermelon cake slices lined up next to the Raspberry Lychee and Mango Yuzu cake slices. Honestly, all of the cake slices looked lusciously delicious, but our taste buds were craving a refreshing slice of Strawberry Watermelon. We selected the cake slice, and the amicable countergirl neatly packaged it and asked if we needed eating utensils. Of course, we needed and wanted eating utensils as we dreamed about digging into the cake at their dining counter right away. My husband rushed me to finish taking photos, and he jabbed his fork into the tender yet juicy cake. Before I knew it, he unassembled the cake slice to reveal a fresh-cut slice of juicy, ripe, and sweet watermelon, light rose-scented cream, tender cake, and was topped with fragrant rose petals and fresh strawberries. He claimed it would be easier to eat because the cake slice was about 3" high and looked like it would've toppled when pierced from top to bottom. Yeah, it was HIS "thing" about eating this cake, I decided to take a bit of the top layer, then a small slice of the watermelon bottom layer together. It truly was refreshing, light, and not overly sugary. The lightness and flavors of this cake seemed like it might have been low-cal, but even if it wasn't, who cares when you're on vacation?!

Nice looking baked goods with a tight seating area. Too bad the taste of the food did not match the appearance. The chocolate croissant had about a snack size candy bar's worth of chocolate in it. The beef filling inside the meat pie had dried up a bit and was quite salty. I've had much better meat pies from frozen food sections at way less than half the price.

Haven't been back to either of the aforementioned shops since then. I always seem to get a combination of some of my favorite items: red bean buns-not to be confused with their red bean "paste" buns, which are thicker and sweeter-, custard buns, egg tarts, plain polo buns, and taro polo buns. There's all range in price $1.00 ~ $2.00, and I definitely prefer their versions to the ones found in other shops as these ones are less sweet and more generous with filing. Also, please be on the lookout for their pre-close specials, where they bag a few assorted items for a hugely discounted price in late afternoon around 5-6pm!
