The last time I ate pizza in Hong Kong as a child, I had sworn off it for good. Now that I'm older, I have a slightly bougier pallet that can help me discern what is good and bad pizza in non Western countries. On a Saturday evening, the restaurant was very much packed so making a reservation in advance is recommended. The four of us shared a bottle of wine which our server kept chilled the entire time. The restaurant is dimly lit making it a good spot for dates. We started off with their Eggplants Dish and Prosciutto Salad. Both were a delight with the salad being a surprise hit. Great slices of meat to accompany our medley of greens. Both came out relatively quick after placing our orders and right before our pizza. Finally, the main entree were delivered in the form of a Spinach Prosciutto Pizza (do you see the trend here?) We absolutely loved the combination even if it seemed very simple. The crust was very fluffy and replicated that wood fire taste very well. Slices were not completely thin like New Yorkers seem to enjoy and were easy to hold and enjoy. Overall, really good pizza for being in Hong Kong. I'd definitely come back again if I was craving a taste of Italian in this mega city.

I asked her why they didn't inform us of that on our previous visits and she, of course, didn't have an answer, but politely mentioned she's seen us before and that's why she gave it to us. The pizzas are good. They've added cocktails recently here, I reckon. Their menu keeps changing. The one time we had antipasti there - smoked eggplant, my jaw was on the floor with the price to portion size proportion, more because the taste disappointed as well. After 2:30 p.m. they have a special menu, all-you-can-eat for two which is a platter and beer or pop. The staff speak English very well and offered great service! My favorites were their shiitake white pizza and their salted egg yolk carbonara! For the pizza, the white sauce was well seasoned, creamy, and cheesey. There were also generous pieces of shittake and the truffle aroma from the truffle oils was pretty prominent. The salted egg yolk carbonara was a nice mix of Chinese salted egg and traditional Italian egg yolk. You could definitely taste the salted egg yolk but it wasn't too strong, especially when mixed with the famililar bacon and cream flavors. The spaghetti was cooked al dente :) I also want to give a shoutout for their condiments and popcorn shrimp. They have this self serve condiments section by the bar and one of the chili oil is a fusion twist on Cantonese XO sauce that mixes Italian pepperoni. It was super fragrant and just the right level of spice! The popcorn shrimp was also a nice appetizer. I'm not a huge fan of smaller shrimp but they do a good job of coating it in a light batter and in their own slightly tangy sauce, which has a mix of mayo and sriracha. Overall would definitely recommend if you're in soho/central!

However, for folks living in Hong Kong who are too desperate to care, it has become a de-facto option, which is made easier by virtue of being a local chain. I have been on both ends of this spectrum and I still cringe at the thought of settling for any of their pies, let alone a slice. Out of all the locations, this Paisano's stands out for being open late and having prime location along Hollywood Road. Drunken expats are usually in here hamming it up for a slice or two and I am sad to say that I've been amongst this crowd before. There would be lines out of the door on any given weekend late night and a steady flow of peeps chowing away during the day. I give them props for having very large portions. Their large pizza pie (24 inches) is massive, even for American standards. It doesn't come cheap either, which at 230-340HKD (#1) is not exactly a great deal. While the pizza is thin enough to be folded like a true New York slice, the rest of it is a tough sell. It's doughy, laden with a bland sauce, and a kind of greasy cheese that doesn't scream quality at all. It's heavy stuff, which works for the gut bomb that drunkenness can create but is not pleasurable by any means. To add to the mediocrity, I've been disappointed with their subs, which range from 70-85HKD for a 12 inch. Portion wise it's packed, but unfortunately it's less protein and lots of lettuce, tomato, olives, and a slathering of mayo + some house sauce. The calzones don't fare much better, which steeped in cheese but is greasy and still incredibly bland. The late night service is super lackluster and I've found a little more civility in the daytime group. I've learned the brand is popular with the Nepalese community in HK and as a result much of the staff is fluent in Nepali (#2) but not so much in Canto.
