There were 5-6 people behind the counter, all loudly gossiping with each other, but only 2 seemed to be making a drink. As the line grew behind me, there was no attempt to help anyone. When it was finally my turn, the first eye contact was when the screen with tip choices was pivoted to me. Its a shame, as the brewed Columbian coffee I bought was good even though it was not fleshed brewed and sat in a pump thermos. I hope the owner understands how lucky they are that people seek out their business thats on a one way street...but if rude staff makes you feel ignored and like an outsider, Starbucks is much easier to find and be ignored at.

The interior is hip, bright, and welcoming. Seating is somewhat limited, but despite that, we were always able to find a place to sit without having to wait. The space feels modern and casual, suitable for a relaxed breakfast or brunch. The food was good overall and service was fast. We ordered the Pancake Board, Spin Art, and a veggie omelette. The Spin Art was my favorite. It was soft, flavorful, and melted in the mouth. The Pancake Board was extremely well executed and fun to share, and the veggie omelette was solid. Coffee, however, was not their strongest item. One nice touch is that water is free and self-serve, which is always appreciated. It can get crowded inside on Saturdays, and since there is no outdoor seating, the moderate ambient noise from other customers makes it less ideal for long conversations or quiet chats. Doug, the owner, was friendly and genuinely eager to help when I had an issue using my $5 off "cupcake points." Although he was not able to resolve it immediately, he did eventually figure it out, so I will be using the coupon on my next visit. Mary's is about 5 minutes outside of downtown Sylvan Beach, so easy to get to for locals or vacationers to Oneida Lake. We were seated quickly when we arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday, and were glad to get there when we did as it filled up quickly just after we got our table. Patrons have the choice of booths, tables, or up at the counter - just how a diner should be. My wife ordered the pancakes and sausage while I opted for the 3 egg breakfast (sunny side up, always) with some bacon and rye toast. My wife raved about her pancakes and was able to get sugar-free syrup with her meal. Portions were generous and food came out quickly. Our waitress was friendly and kept drink refills of water, juice, and coffee rolling. Prices are reasonable and the menu was quite large. Lunch is also available and we'd love to come out and try that sometime. Mary's succeeds in what makes a good diner worth driving to. My only drawback would be the wait to get a table on the weekend if you arrive at the wrong time. It was standing room only when we left.
