Not much new here, but they do carry a line of candles. Note 1: This is yet another Nashville shop that doesn't like visitors taking photos for some reason. I didn't know that at first until I found a small sign in the upstairs room. I did notice a sign at the front door on my way out but it was mostly hidden by the outdoor decorations. Seems like a loss of free advertising to not allow photos. Note 2: Although this address is not listed on the upcoming mass property auction (end of Oct '19), I heard on two occasions that the property was for sale and that the businesses were being forced to vacate soon. The prices are reasonable for the quality of work. This store is run by a non-profit artist organization, The Pillar Group. There's another similar shop at College Mall in Bloomington, where Victoria's Secret once stood past Target. The art is diverse and has a local and Indiana theme to it. While most jewelry is focused towards women, there are a few pieces of men's gear. It has the feel of a gift shop, and indeed there are greeting cards, and wrapping available for purchases. It's a very wide variety of handmade art, and it's all well-presented. I'm embarrassed how much I've purchased here; the values are pretty good for what I look for. Parking is downtown-crappy, but the store is bright and easy to shop.

My wife was shopping next door inside Tivoli Fashions in the Fountain Square Mall just south of the county courthouse in Bloomington. Since the shopping she was doing had nothing to do with me, I wandered out into the mall and found By Hand Gallery just across the hallway. If you enjoy looking at hand crafted items like wall hangings, ceramics, and small items that can be gifts for either your friends or for yourself. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed any assistance. Even when I explained that I only stopped in to pass time while my wife shopped next door, he said he understood and to feel free to browse and ask questions. I was feeling welcomed, not watched or like I was wasting his time. That's good business. I really enjoyed looking over the items. I don't do a lot of decorating in our home, but I did see things here that I thought would look nice. You never know what you'll see at the Brown County Art Gallery! You might just round a corner and…read morebe struck with a beautiful vision -- a gorgeous work of art right in front of you. One of the best things about this little Nashville art gallery (other than being surprised to see such beautiful things in it) is that it's free to visit! Yes, you can just walk right in and start exploring. If you wanted to talk to someone, there's a booth with people in it who will, I'm sure, tell you informative things about the gallery. I wouldn't know! I don't like to talk to people at art galleries. I'd rather just experience the art myself, quietly, and form my own opinions. What I do know about this art gallery is that it's almost 100 years old, as of this writing. Nashville, Indiana, is a hub for art, and I would consider the Brown County Art Gallery to be the heart of the area's art scene. You'll find work from local Indiana artists here, as well as artists from around the Midwest and beyond. The art ranges in styles from impressionist to photo-realism and everything in between. You can purchase original artwork, or if you're feeling less spendy, you can purchase more budget-friendly prints or postcards. There's something for every art collector here.

We were immediately welcomed by friendly staff when we arrived and encouraged to visit the juried show. The gallery has been running by the Brown County Art Gallery Artist Association since 1926, making it one of the oldest galleries in the U.S. The gallery has moved around a bit since 1926, with the current location on land donated by noted artist, Adolph Shulz. The art is high quality by well-known and budding Indiana artists. Much of the art is museum quality. This is a place to buy real art for your home. Prices start at a couple hundred dollars and go up into the thousands. There were two galleries featuring art and stories about famous artists with Indiana connections. Currently, artists Nancy Noell and Gustave Baumann are featured. Some of the woodblocks carved by Baumann are on display. There is another large gallery with paintings for sale by local artists and members of the Association. A wonderful classroom/studio has been added to the facility. During the summer, kids can sign up for lessons. (But classes are full for 2024). There is a small gift shop with cards, books about the artist of Brown County and more. Visiting the gallery is free but they do take donations. They have ample parking in their private lot. The building is ADA accessible. I love it and will return.

There are sculptures, large and small paintings and photographs, and multi-media forms. Much of the art comes from local and regional artists, and is of high quality. We were also amused. by some of the great tongue-in-cheek art there. There's something probably or anyone, art lover or someone looking for gifts. Some fine and fun sculptures got our attention. There are a variety of books for all ages, some book themed gift items, puzzles and even a visiting bookstore cat. I don't believe he was supposed to be in there, but he ran in the open front door and was greeting everyone who came that day. All the staff were super nice and friendly! This is the place where you'll find some used treasures, but also new books and and some rare and collectible books. Whenever I visit a new bookstore, I gravitate to the children's section. This bookstore has lots of children's books, from picture books to graphic novels. I saw some ancient Nancy Drew novels, with original covers. I'm not a Nancy Drew head, but I can appreciate a vintage mystery collection when I see one. One of the best things about Fallen Leaf Books is that they leave (leaf?) you the eff alone. I don't remember if anyone greeted me or talked to me, and frankly, I don't care. All I need in a bookstore is books and cozy nooks and quietude, and that's what you'll find here.
