Adam Wallach and Ken Barer do an incredible job of running the camp, marketing it, communicating with parents, rallying kids for weekly spirit days -- and generally rockin' it. The kids swim twice day and are given just the right amount of freedom for their age. My guy was thrilled to ride his bike around on trails independently (without a grownup following closely) in mountain biking. Picky eater though he is, he seems to eat decently well, carbo-loading every day at lunch. Kids get occasional treats like fruit sushi, which the kids get to make themselves, trips to an ice cream truck, and cold (not-too-unhealthy) popsicles in the afternoon. Our guy kept telling us about eating fresh strawberries at lunchtime that were picked, he said, from the camp's own strawberry patch. (I can't verify this claim; it did seem like it'd take an improbably long growing season and an awfully, awfully large patch of strawberries to supply all those hungry kids for the summer.) Counselors keep the kids hydrated in the heat, buses are shockingly timely (MTA should take note!). Bus counselors do a great job of communicating bus arrival times. Activities are varied and interesting, including options like "mining," water works, pottery, archery, crafts, farming(!), all manner of sports (tennis, soccer, baseball, etc..) -- and there is always something new going on. My guy was excited to go from the moment he woke up each morning. Yes, the camp is guilty of blatant cultural appropriation -- but we get that at this point, there's monetary value in the branding that makes change difficult. At least they're changing the logo in coming years. We'd be thrilled if they actually taught the kids a bit about the tribes of the Haudenosaunee / Iroquois Confederacy that the groups are named after. (Our son reports that there is some sort of small "museum" on the grounds with a few artifacts found on-site.) We did some of our own research. All in all a fabulous, fun way to spend the summer. Our guy is counting the years until he gets to be a counselor himself.

We selected hockey and soccer as our sports. They broke the kids up into two groups and provided attention to all of them. It was extremely well organized. They kept all the kids' attention and knew each child by name within minutes. I heard only praise from all the parents I spoke to afterwards - it was one of the best parties they had ever been to. It is refreshing to see a place they take pride in their gym and genuinely want the kids to have a good time - few places are like this these days!!! This is truly a gem. Had my two kids in Oasis Downtown for two years in a row, they loved it both times. Camp is…read morelocated right across from East River Park, which is where they go to play soccer and a 10 minute walk from public pool on Houston where they go every day (if I remember correctly). One of the things that attracted us was the location. Literally a 5 minute ride down FDR from us in Stuyvesant Town, with some of our neighbors making a 15-minute bus trip instead, either way it's better than an out of town day camp with kids sitting on a school bus for one hour each way. Not sure if I agree with the other reviewer's evaluation, as issues raised are not unique to Oasis and can be said of any summer camp - they all employ teenagers as junior counselors and kids do occasionally displace or loose their stuff. On the other hand, everyone in the supervisory position is a mature adult, the camp has a full-time nurse and I had no problem having them take care of my son with Type 1 diabetes. The bottom line is that you need to get to know as much as you can about the camp, get organized and plan ahead, same as you do with sending your kid to school. I don't expect them to care more about my kids than I do, so I take the lead. Another thing that struck me as odd in the previous review is the mention of constantly being told to tip the counselors. i remember seeing only a single note about appreciation for counselors being welcome, and it certainly did not strike me as odd; if anything, it was good to know that there's a formal process to to express your gratitude to people who've taken care of your child for a couple of weeks or the entire summer. And so, we are doing Oasis Downtown again this year, looking forward to familiar faces and making new friends.
