Trees stones and…read moregolf. The West Avon Cemetery is a lovely and peaceful graveyard that I believe is connected to the West Avon Congregation Church. The church was founded in 1751 but the oldest grave I could find was 1811. They very well could be older ones because many were worn and impossible to read. Most of the gravestones are pretty modest but they were a couple of obelisks that were so popular in the middle 1800s. Most of the stones seemed to be white or gray and it gives the old graveyard a strange and spooky appearance. Some were just nubs in the ground and others just simple wooden crosses. Many family plots are present and the stones were all neatly lined up together. The cemetery is in a lovely location with the huge church looming over on one side and some lovely woods on the other. A golf course is right across the street but the trees obscure the view of the golfers. A lovely and very morbid sort of graveyard, especially with the light colored gravestones blending in the snow.

Many of the grave markers from the 17th century did not age well with time; those deteriorated because it was made of wood and weaker stones. The tombstones that outlasted time were from wealthy families that had the funds to purchase, have it engraved, and shipped to Wethersfield. There weren't many grave carvers in town at that time. There are only 3 tombstones that survived; all three were from the 17th century. Most of the tombstones were made of brownstones and grey granite schist. There were quite a few that I could not see any markings on it. Most of the tombstones were placed in an unorganized way; back then they chose whichever spots were available. It was nice and peaceful walking through. It fascinates me that these people were alive 386 years ago. There were definitely newer tombstones as well. I sense that this place gets really creepy at night....

When we get there, the Cemetary people brought us to the incorrect plot. I tried several times to tell the Funeral Employees that we were at the wrong spot, they finally realized the problem. Some Idiot in the Cemetary Office "transposed" the numbers where the plot was. Even the people who dug the grave did not check if it was correct. This is an embarrassment to not just the Funeral home, but also the Family. The person in the Office did not do a very good job, and needs to be spoken to, and their worked checked. The Family will not pay twice to the Cemetary.

There were large trees and very old headstones; some of which has degraded over time. The oldest grave is from 1722 and there are approximately 155 graves. I planted some asta there forever ago and it's still alive and strong. It's a great place to walk and go on bike rides as well. Lots of hills and roads and beautiful tombstones to look at. He even gave me his cell phone number so I could reach him if I needed anything. He allowed me to do it on a Saturday when the cemetery is technically closed. It's a gorgeous place and I'm so happy my dad is there.
