Ponds and peace…read more Waterhole Cemetery is a relatively small graveyard that has a nice variety of gravestones. Nothing really large but there were several medium sized obelisks and a couple of other fairly elaborate memorials. The cemetery is surrounded by a cool black spiked fence and a stone wall. It was well maintained although there were some spots that looked they were intentional left rough and wild. The cemetery was started in 1793 but most of the graves I saw were from the mid 1800s, the time that obelisks were in fashion for dead folks. Many of the soft brownstone memorials were cracked or fading but I did see some cool death heads and unique and personal engravings A cool and interesting little cemetery that probably got it's name from the little pond only a short distance from it. Although the little graveyard is no longer accepting new customers it remains a fascinating part of East Hampton's history.

Graves on a…read morehill Indian Hill Cemetery was founded back in 1850 so it isn't one of the oldest graveyards in the area but it's location high on a hill certainly makes it one the most scenic. The lovely location attracted some of the most affluent and wealthy people in the state and many of the gravestones and memorials reflect this. Huge obelisks, fancy stones and unique and elaborate memorials are common in this cemetery. A spooky and very Gothic chapel stands on one side of the graveyard and it's a great place for a walk up and down the many hills. It's a huge cemetery and spectacular views of the surrounding area can be seen from the hills, especially in the fall. A wonderful and beautiful graveyard that is filled with amazing tombs and memorials to the deceased. I cant even imagine how much some of the largest and elaborate stones cost. A very cool, unique and stunning place to see how the wealthy and powerful were remembered.

When we get there, the Cemetary people brought us to the incorrect plot. I tried several times to tell the Funeral Employees that we were at the wrong spot, they finally realized the problem. Some Idiot in the Cemetary Office "transposed" the numbers where the plot was. Even the people who dug the grave did not check if it was correct. This is an embarrassment to not just the Funeral home, but also the Family. The person in the Office did not do a very good job, and needs to be spoken to, and their worked checked. The Family will not pay twice to the Cemetary.

Very theatrical with lanterns, creepy ghosts crawling up your back when you least expect it. I screamed my heart out more than once, I ended up apologizing to strangers as I grabbed onto with fear. At least four of the nearby headstones were toppled over, and many more showed signs of long neglect. Our family vault had been broken into, (it has been broken into in the past - nothing there to find, folks!) and used for storage of clothing and returnable bottles. The cemetery doesn't seem to have an assigned caretaker or Sexton. This is an historic burying place for some well-known 19th century men and women. Who's in charge here?

It is clean, well kept and very tidy. Poquonock's second meeting house was originally built on this site in 1798, just two years before Elm Grove Cemetery opened in 1800. That building was torn down in 1872. The Universalist Society, which had been using the meeting house for their services, joined the Second School Society, the administrators of Elm Grove Cemetery, and the Spiritual Harmonial Society in building a mortuary chapel. The old section of the cemetery is rather beautiful and I've seen dates into the early 1800s. I decided to review this cemetery today because I know that a lot of cemeteries can be very strict about planting and leaving items on the head stones and it can be frustrating to find a cemetery that allows you the freedom to honor your loved ones how you see fit. This cemetery has the loosest rules of any in the area that we looked at. You are free to plant what you wish in front of the stone. Silk flowers, miniature statues, balloons, photos, and solar night lights are some of the other items I've seen here. Just keep in mind that anything you put there is going to need to withstand the elements and if it blows away it will most likely meet the mower.

Noah Webster's (author of the Merriam-Webster dictionary) parents is buried there. The last burial was in 1971. The cemetery is fenced in and there is a historical maker in the front sidewalk area. There were large trees and very old headstones; some of which has degraded over time. The oldest grave is from 1722 and there are approximately 155 graves. If you're a fan of history and spooky things, I recommend a visit!

Many of the grave markers from the 17th century did not age well with time; those deteriorated because it was made of wood and weaker stones. The tombstones that outlasted time were from wealthy families that had the funds to purchase, have it engraved, and shipped to Wethersfield. There weren't many grave carvers in town at that time. There are only 3 tombstones that survived; all three were from the 17th century. Most of the tombstones were made of brownstones and grey granite schist. There were quite a few that I could not see any markings on it. Most of the tombstones were placed in an unorganized way; back then they chose whichever spots were available. It was nice and peaceful walking through. It fascinates me that these people were alive 386 years ago. There were definitely newer tombstones as well. I sense that this place gets really creepy at night....

My 6 year old child is buried in this cemetery. I consider comments inappropriate and thoughtless. He died Nov. 19th, 1980. Think about it if you have children or not. Look around and you see his gravestone. It has a spaceship modeled after Star Wars. Your comments give me the creeps by the way.
