Ogunquit beach has a very gradual slope which makes it perfect for long walks - you don't get the feeling that you are walking on a slant. It's absolutely gorgeous, with large sandy expanses, especially at low tide. There are often flocks of sandpipers, which I love to watch as they run so quickly over the sand and search for food. Ogunquit Beach is especially nice in the off season - the crowd spreads out over the area so you never feel as if people are on top of you like you might in the peak season. There is a parking lot that is free from November-March, and you can also easily walk to the beach from in town. Next to the parking lot there is a covered area with chairs and benches which are perfect for just relaxing by the ocean. There are also a couple of restaurants, a snack bar, a beach store, and an ice cream shop very close by.

We came in early November on a Sunday, parked on Route 1A by a 2-hr parking sign, and walked down to the loop at the end of Harbor Beach Rd near Cliff Walk, and just sat on the concrete path leading to the beach eating our lunch. It was bliss. The abundant and unseasonably warm sunshine, the vast expanse of ocean ebbing and flowing, the sloping crescent shaped sandy beach... there was nothing not perfect about it. There's a large parking lot and you now pay on your phone for parking. They also have a bathroom in the parking lot for public use. If you want more of a grown up beach with less public attractions, you might prefer Long Sands beach just up the road. It was cool bringing my boyfriend here as this was one of the first places in Maine my family took me too when I was a baby. All in all, a classic beach spot in Maine.

Once you cross the bridge, the beach is very close. The sand is nice and the water is cold. The bathrooms were tight but it's at the front by parking. If you go at noon during a busy summer season, be prepared to wait. Wish there was food vendors for some snacks. So make sure to bring your own drinks/food. There is a lobster shack at the end of the road but looks like a hassle to walk to.

Folks in front of us kept a noticeable distance- but there were folks behind us and next to us who weren't nearly distant enough for me to make me want to stay more than the 45 minutes we were here. But I will say, there are restrooms, outdoor showers, beach is well kept, and the water....oh man....the water looked like sapphire. Under (real) normal circumstances, I would've had my fill of beach time, then head out for Lobsters. Just one of those was achieved.

There are free restrooms and an outdoor shower head/foot wash station. Lifeguard on duty as well. There are some large kelp beds in the water but if you go out past them, the water is clear - we saw various clam shells and a few stripped bass swimming.

I guess I'm just used to all the garbage and crowds along the Jersey Shore. The only downside is that parking is a bit pricey, at $20 a pop. But if you are an early bird and can make it there before I think either 8 or 9, then parking is only $5. Since we came on a Tuesday (at around noon), there weren't much people around, which was super nice. The weather for that day was only forecasted at the low 70s with some clouds, but it turned out to be a great beach day. It was warm, but not sweltering. Warm enough to go in the water - but only if you're brave. The water was icy cold. But after a while, you just become numb and don't even notice it (lol). There aren't really any waves but there is a very strong current so you definitely don't want to mess around with that. I never went out further than past my stomach, especially since I don't swim very well. Even just standing there with the water up to my waist, I could feel the currents pulling me. The best part of this beach is that it's only a 20-minute drive from Portland. We were visiting for the week and staying in Downtown, and didn't want to drive far to get to a beach so Ferry Beach was perfect for us. If I lived in the area, I would totally get a season pass.
