I'm ashamed to say that up until recently, I hadn't shopped for fabric anywhere but Joanns. But…read morefinally, enough was enough, and as I commit to sewing more and delving into the world of quilting, I decided to source all my fabric from places other than Joanns, opting instead to explore the small fabric stores in my area, and what a great decision that was! I was able to discover so many new favorites, 2nd Street Quilt Shop being one of them, and source so many gorgeous, fresh & new designs I had never seen before! It has truly renewed my interest in sewing, and I'm truly excited to embark on this new quest in quilting! Fabric Affair appears to be a newer business, as their store sign also has "now open" directly underneath it! I can't tell you how many times I have driven down Livernois not realizing that this was here. The building is very unassuming from the road, just a black & grey square of a building, but if you love sewing and quilting and are in need of any sewing-related items, whether it be fabric, thread, or something else, I highly encourage you to stop by! The interior space of this place completely blew me away and was completely not what I expected from seeing the outside. You can definitely tell it's nice & new. The floors and entire space is so well organized! The fabric is sorted by color and by themes, if any. It's just a Type A, organized, sewing-lover's paradise! They also do classes here too it seems! I was mainly here for fabric though, so I got down to business searching through all their rows and rows of fabric. Everything being color coordinated, mainly in one spot, really helped me out though, as I was going for a specific part of the color palette. I was able to efficiently shop through this space, and the employees were so helpful, stopping by to see if I needed any assistance and grabbing me a fabric cart without me even asking for one. I love when they anticipate needs, and can I just say this fabric cart is ADORABLE?! I had never used one before, and it just makes the shopping experience all that more fun! I love Fabric Affair! I found so many new & unique fabrics here that I can't wait to incorporate into future sewing and quilting projects! All the workers were so friendly, and it was just the best experience all in all here. I can't wait to come back soon! :)

For the prices they charge and low-quality / discontinued fabric, this is far from an upscale fabric / upholstery atelier. The customer service is worse than the product and presentation. Upon walking in, no one greeted me, despite the fact that two employees were chatting at the central desk near the door. I found my way to the back area with the upholstery fabric. I wandered around a bit looking at the myriad sample decks. Because there was no information or pricing on anything, I returned and waited for the woman at the central desk to finish her chit-chat before acknowledging me. She apologized for being short-staffed (so probably not a good time to stand around and chat.) Upon arriving back in the upholstery fabric area, I began explaining my project and said I was seeking fabric in the $30-40/yard range. She abruptly cut me off and said sharply, "Don't have it." I explained I was able to find quite a few options online and know they exist in this range elsewhere and she snapped, "Then go online." I continued the conversation forward by describing the overall dimensions of the cushion seating bench and she again cut me off with a sharp-toned "How many yards?" as if I didn't know how to plan a cushion (or add and multiply). I bluntly replied, "Don't be short with me. I've been sewing for 30 years." I never understand why so-called "experts" (sales clerks) feel the need to be defensive and condescending rather than patient and helpful. There are a million questions she SHOULD have asked before this last one: desired quality, use, color, pattern, touch, durability, etc. Once we discussed details a bit more, she said, "All we have in the $30 range is cotton." If you had something in that range, why didn't you say so in the first place . . . other than trying to steer me into a higher price? When she showed me the swatches, I asked for the specific pricing as nothing was labeled. She replied with, "Can you imagine if we had to price everything individually?" At the end of my rope with her, I simply stated, "Yeah, you would actually have to work." I then turned and walked out. Too bad she couldn't have been attentive, pleasant, and helpful. Had she treated me with respect and courtesy, she would have made nice sale and new customer. Instead, she earned the store yet another 1-star rating on Yelp.

I walked out today after they cherry picked their "preferred demographic" and walked them to cash registers that were SUDDENLY open, while those of us who didn't fit their homogeneous profile of "ideal customers" continued to stand in line, and were told "Oh, they aren't taking anymore if we DARED to attempt to to use the cash registers that magically opened. On top of that the organization of the store would only appeal to those whose brain enjoys a Pinter play put on in an elementary school gymnasium by mimes. In short: it makes no sense, and is often subjugated to the "season of the moment" but MONTHS before that season is actually here. I know I'm not looking for Christmas decorations on Labor Day, but maybe the chunky, middle aged, "blue jean and sweater" crowd is, and, after all, it is that demographic Hobby Lobby cares about, and the rest of us are "defective" if we don't agree.

Sadly, it was the Corona virus and my need for fabric to make masks ( to donate ) which finally introduced me to this sweet lady and her successful shop. The ladies shopping seemed very engaged and interactive with her and finding lots in her store as well. I found everything I needed for sure. Lots and lots of beautiful fabric. The really special thing about this store is all the ribbon and trim. There are hair bows already made up and for sale, or you can buy some of the ribbons and make your own.
