We took friends that just moved into the area and it was excellent! Server was great, manager even came over after dinner to see how everything was. The food took a little longer than normal but it was worth the wait. I only took pictures of our food, not my friends but they had the cordon bleu schnitzel and she had the schnitzel champignon with a Bernie sauce and an extra side of shrimp. Hubby had the special which was a salmon in a lemon butter sauce with shrimp was so good I went with the hunter schnitzel which is mushrooms in the burgundy sauce. We decided to dine at this restaurant for Valentine's Day. The restaurant was packed. We were seated after a short wait. Water and menus were dropped off. We placed our orders for drinks, appetizers and entrées. We received our drinks and appetizers within 15 minutes of waiting. I had a virgin strawberry daiquiri. It was alright. My baked onion soup was good. There was lots of onion and a decent layer of cheese melted. Unfortunately, then it was a 45 minute wait for our entrées. Our drinks sat empty. Our server was elsewhere. He definitely missed the opportunity to upsell more drinks. I was annoyed that a table that had arrived later in the evening were eating their entrées already. Meanwhile we were still waiting around. I think the manager noticed that we were unhappy at our table and approached us. We asked where were our entrées as it had been 45 minutes after we finished our appetizers. He went into the kitchen and finally our food arrived. My husband ordered steak and it was cooked to order. However, his steak was room temperature. It had been sitting around in the kitchen for awhile. My combination plate was a mix of cold and hot items. The schnitzel and bratwurst were hot. The beef rouladen, spatzel, and veggies were room temperature. The meal was not enjoyable at this point. We finished eating our entrées in 15 minutes. I packed my plate to take home after taking a few bites. The flavours and portion size were good. I ordered a Black Forest cake for dessert because it was made in-house. I had originally wanted to order this prior to booking this restaurant. It looked homemade. Definitely, not the best cake I have ever eaten. It tasted average. I finished the cake in 10 minutes and we asked for the bill. We left the restaurant within 30 minutes after our entrées arrived. I do not recommend dining at this restaurant on busy occasions. The staff cannot keep up with orders efficiently. I also do not recommend you to order steak when it is busy. It is disappointing to eat cold food in a restaurant unless you are expecting the food to be cold (ie a salad). If I wanted to reheat my food, I would have ordered take out instead. I think it is best to order some schnitzels which is what they are know for. At least those can be cooked in batches and you have a better chance of eating in a more timely manner. Lastly, our server was inexperienced at his job which made this a disappointing dining experience. He never came around to ask if we were enjoying the drinks or food. I had a steak knife with my schnitzel order, but my husband had a butter knife with his steak order. We asked the bus girl for our bill as we did not see our server. She did not pass that message as we had to flag down our server for our bill when we finally saw him. read more

We planned a nice dinner out with the family for a celebratory treat. We were looking for a nice meal, preferably with steaks and/or other great beefiness. We originally thought we'd go to one of the two popular steakhouse chains in town, but while searching for highly rated sources of steak on Yelp and elsewhere, we stumbled upon Elisabeth's Chalet. Being a big fan of great German food, and since the name was the same as our first-born, even in spelling, we were thrilled to give this charmingly-appearing restaurant a try. Unfortunately, this was a bit of a letdown on many fronts. First of all, the quality of service just wasn't there. We love a good classic establishment with years of history in its walls, however for a mid-range to higher priced restaurant we expect service and cleanliness to be taken seriously. The tablecloth under the glass was stained. All of our drink glasses were dirty. My wife's soda glass arrived with floaties in it, and when they graciously replaced it, it was clearly the same glass with the same floaties. The service was very slow. It was a Tuesday evening with just a few tables filled, but the time to get everything was quite long. The quality of food was surprisingly low as well. The Filet Maxim was horribly overcooked. It was ordered medium-well, perhaps higher than average, but that is how a member of our family likes it. Filet can be done a bit more than medium retain its buttery texture. However, this piece was WELL well done. Way overcooked. The outside was slightly burnt. It was difficult to even identify this cut a piece of a filet mignon. It seemed way too tough to be filet. To top it off, the "dungeness crab" to top it off was a pulpy mess of canned crabmeat, and the bearnaise sauce really just seemed to be simple cheap hollandaise, and hardly any at that. The Combination Dinner, consisting of schnitzel, rouladen, and bratwurst, smothered in onion and gravy, served with spaetzle, looked wonderful on the plate when it arrived... but most of it was a bit of a letdown. The bratwurst was not a traditional bratwurst. It was clearly just a smokie or something taken out of one of those bulk packs of cheap sausages you get from Costco or Superstore. The skin had way too much synthetic snap and chewy ends. The flavour of the sausage overpowered everything else. The spaetzle had a nice pan-fried appearance but was lacking any flavour from fat or seasoning. It was quite blands. The onion gravy was also underseaoned. The rouladen was cooked well though. The New York Strip was large and tasted great, however there was so much tough gristle, unrendered fat, and chewy pieces, that about 1/3 of the steak was inedible. I think we'll need to redo our celebratory dinner elsewhere. read more

Just rushed to have dinner there from the airport. Website says they serve until 9, arrived at 7:55 and they refused to serve us! Hostess/waitress said it was slow so the owner said it cost too much to stay open. Been eating there for years but won't be back.. Amazing spot that we found and so happy ! My husband and I came here for date night . Brings me back to Europe with the authentic flavor in their food and the ambience. I booked through open table and requested good seating. Upon arrival they quickly got us the best seat in the restaurant. I mean don't get me wrong because this place is not about the beautiful views etc. But they kept it in mind and gave us really good service . We'd ordered garlic cheese mushroom for appetizers and cheese toast . The Best we've ever had hands down . And for dinner my husband ordered cordon blue schnitzel and I did their special prime rib for that night. I absolutely loved my prime rib cuz everything was on point. My husband liked his food as well although it did get a bit dry . Maybe next time we'll ask for extra sauce on the side . This was our first time at Elisabeth's. It seemed like a good place for my brother's birthday so we decided to book a table. The restaurant is a quaint little building along Highway 10 with plenty of parking in the front and next door by the school. The restaurant marquee doesn't scream out "Elisabeth's" so some people in my party missed it on their first drive by. We were warmly greeted by multiple people at the front desk and led to our table right away. (We saw folks at the front dressed very nicely while my group was casual yet we were all welcomed the same way.) The place is cozy with a feeling of dining in your grandparents' house. I've been to a few Alpine restaurants and some have awful cheesy decors - this one is understated if a bit old fashioned but I'm good with that. It added some ambience to old world cuisine. The wine list is okay; nothing spectacular and I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have a Riesling by the glass. The menu and specials had a good selection of schnitzels and steaks but also plenty of chicken, fish and shellfish selections. Service was exceptional. We had a friendly waiter who was very attentive and several assistants to bring our food and take care of us throughout our dinner. I had the Schnitzel Madagascar with spatzle. The schnitzel was lacking salt but the rich black pepper with mushroom sauce was the star of the dish. The spatzle was very buttery and lightly fried to give it a bit of crisp. The red cabbage on the side was not too sweet and the hint of vinegar cuts through the richness of the schnitzel and sauce. After they cleared our dishes, they wheeled out the dessert cart - uber retro and fits the old fashioned feel. They had plenty of selection but I went for the apple strudel ("when in Rome (Munich)..."). It could've been warmed up to enhance the dessert but it was still good. It was served with whipped cream and it wasn't too sweet. It was full of apples bathed in cinnamon and sugar in a flaky crust - not sure if this is made in house but still gut! I was a bit pessimistic about going when I reviewed all of the reviews. Here us mine. We made reservations for 4. When we arrived there were only 4 other tables there but we had the reserved table sign. We were seated promptly and water was give to us right away. There was only one waiter and his female assistant. Warm bread was brought to the table and enough butter for the 4 of us. A lot of times it is just cold Pattie's of butter. This was not the case here. Drinks were ordered from Nigel our waiter. Very good astute waiter and funny. He read us very well. We ordered an Australian Chardonnay which we love Chardonnay's. We took a few sips and it tasted like a Riesling. I asked to see the bottle or the box it came in as we were not sure. Instead Nigel took our drinks and immediately replaced them with a better Chardonnay which was great. Meals were ordered. We had a chicken pot pie that was the size of a small loaf of bread. It was excellent. I had the Hawaiian schnitzel was hot and perfectly cooked. The schnitzel with prawns was really tasty. The down side was it came with only 4 small prawns. I specifically asked for only carrots. Cooked to perfection, not hard, not soft and soggy but just right. Thumbs up. The other schnitzel order was delicious. All in all the food was great, cooked and served hot. We didn't have desert but the Black Forest cake was made with kirsch. The only way to bake a bfc. Terrible management. And they served me raw pork and not just a little bit it was a thick chunk!! So I don't normally leave reviews, but here it is... We received a gift certificate to go here as we love German food and my family is german. We started with escargot and the prawns, they weren't terrible but not great! We ordered 4 schnitzels and mine was served to me raw! Unfortunately Because the lighting was so dim I ate part of it and fed some to my 13 month old before realizing that the red meat wasn't ham!!! Now I am ok with people making a mistake but not making up for it is not right! I said I wanted to finish the rest of my food, but they took my plate and I ended up waiting while they brought a new plate after the rest of my family was long finished. The meal itself when properly cooked was ok, but nothing to write home about. So the worst part about it all is they didn't offer to take my meal off the bill or even a discount or an apology for feeding me and my son raw pork, they also over charged us on another dish. So I went to talk to the manager after and he didn't do anything about the overage charge nor did he offer an apology about the raw meat, he just said "oh well, you were talking with your server and she said you were ok with it". Which I was NOT, but I was trying to be polite! Any other restaurant would be embarrassed if they served someone raw pork and I hope would not charge for that meal! And we still ended up leaving there without getting reimbursed for the overage charge but they happily accepted our 15% tip...... read more

We had a late lunch here on Saturday, and it was lovely. Goulash soup was very nice, the "Madagascar schnitzel" was crisp outside and tender within, with plenty of fresh mushrooms, and the prawns Provençal were the highlight. read more

Since the changeover I think people have wondered if it would still be the place for Schnitzel and other great German meals. Well the new owners have not just maintained but improved the Chalet. The service was top notch, which is what is keeping my rating from the floor. Really some of the best service I've had in awhile... Friendly, attentive, and dressed to impress. The wait staff really made us feel valued and cared about. I really wanted to love this place! But the food was... well... The best I can say is that it didn't get us sick. It came out way too quickly to have been made fresh. I ordered the parm schnitzel, which came out with a few steamed veggies and plain Fettuccini noodles... Altogether a really boring presentation and an underwhelming flavor. My gf ordered the chicken pot pie, which came out more like a soup with a biscuit on top. They should have called it "Chicken Pot Lie". I've had better microwave dinners. We were both really disappointed with the food. The worst thing about this place was the interior design. It felt like a retirement home. It's a beautiful space with nice wood and mirrors that is completely wasted with ugly colors, dated upholstery, and prints that look like my drunkard grandfather stumbled into a thrift shop twenty years ago with fifteen dollars and no taste. The music they played sounded like they had bought a $40 Casio keyboard and pushed the demo key. I honestly think silence would have been better. Maybe they are going for the retirement home feel, because the average age of their customers while we were there had to have been about seventy. It really felt like most of them were returning customers because of how the front of house made them feel. For the owners of this restaurant... Please take this as constructive criticism. Nobody goes to a restaurant hoping to have a bad time. You are doing a lot of things right and it's clear you care. But you are competing with home chefs in the age of YouTube, the Food Network, and AllRecipes... If we can cook better at home (and we can), you lose us as future customers. You need to do better. You could really use a good interior decorator. Spend a couple grand and give the place a much needed facelift. Get someone new in the kitchen who spends more time learning and creating and thinking about plating than clinging to tradition and arguing with detractors that the food is "authentic". And for God's sake change the music! I'm sure plenty of people tell you how great the food is... They are lying for the same reason you don't tell a friend that their baby just isn't that cute. As we were leaving, another customer was actually complaining about her food because the chef used a beef gravy on pork and she thought it was gross. For every criticism you get, there are a lot more people who just smile and nod and never come back. Because it's easier and more socially acceptable to just say everything is great. But everything is not great at the Chalet. I might give it another shot in a few years to see if anything has changed. For now, the only reason I could see recommending this place is if you're trying to pickup a senior citizen. read more

This place was recommended by a "local" and it did not disappoint. The food was very fresh and tasty. The Hungarian Goulash soup was so good. I had the Prime Rib and it was amazing. The vegetables were fresh and tasty. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants good food. read more

Stay Away, Horrible food, even worse management. Placed a take out order with them, and the food was soggy and cold. It was supposed to have hollandaise sauce and shrimp on top. Only one had shrimp, and neither had hollandaise. It had a weird off white colour jelly on both, that was very obviously not hollandaise. It looked like slop. We did not eat it. Called promptly, and was told to return the orders, we went to the restaurant, they are 3-4 blocks from us, under 5 minutes in a car, and they were closed!!?? My wife went and knocked on the back door where they told us they were closed and they would get the manager to call. Why they told us to come down only 5 minutes before, I have no idea. Manager called next day, said he would take care of us, and replace meals next time, just call him before coming in. 2 days later we called, and the manager changed his mind and said he'd only give us one free!!! 2 inedible meals, but only 1 replacement, besides being insulting, it's poor customer service. So we paid over $50 for 2 meals we threw in the garbage, plus a wasted trip, and our wasted time. We will never return. read more

My husband and I have been here three times, we usually go for a special occasion such as his Birthday last night. Amazing service, excellent food, and the traditional yet welcoming décor makes it one of our favourite places. We are by far the youngest couple there usually, but that doesn't matter. Get the Chateau Briand for two and the apple strudel - amazing! Their schnitzel is fantastic and they have a large selection of traditional German food to try as well as some other styles. Pretty good wine list, I with there were more by the glass options though. The owner is 84! He gave me a rose as I left, always a great place to go. read more

Meh. Our dining experience started by standing in the lobby for 5 minutes without being recognized. Then another 5 minutes waiting for an unorganized host to figure out where to seat us. Our waiter was friendly but always hurried, but that's what happens when he has to make drinks and deliver all of his own food. He never stopped back after the first bites for a quality check (big fail). The bus girls need to be given more responsibility than just filling water and clearing plates, the place feels generally understaffed. The food was OK but nothing spectacular. Been coming to Elisabeth's in Cloverdale for many many years now and we are NEVER disappointed, but due to COVID haven't been in quite some time. Tonight's dinner was the best food I've had hands down for many months. Had the schnitzel of course! Again, the service was extraordinary - our water glasses were refilled no less than 5 times. The menu is quite extensive so don't worry if you don't care for schnitzel. If schnitzel is your thing, check them out on Mondays when it's on special. 2nd try at this restaurant after it was originally sold. I ordered prime rib. It was approx 1/4 of an inch thick and grey in color. You could stretch it like elastic. Potatoes were also grey. Vege ok. My friend ordered seafood schnitzel and the meat was so greasy. We left without eating. We thought we would give it one more try. But never again. Made an online reservation for a table of 5 at 1:30pm on a Thursday via OpenTable. We all showed up but it was closed. A large banner outside advertises opening hours until 2pm, and the website had no mention that they'd be closed. (Because this was a few days after Christmas, we checked to make sure they were open before we made the reservation.) When we arrived, there wasn't even a temporary sign on the door. Well, what can I say.....this place was once a decent schnitzel restaurant and I suppose it still is.....certainly hasn't changed in decades. Same ancient decor, same dessert cart, same rather limited menu. Our recent foray with friends in the hopes of a decent meal was marred by lukewarm schnitzel, boring veggies, ho-hum desserts, and poor service. On that point , our waiter forgot our appetizers, the bussing staff tried to kidnap my wife's plate well before she was finished, and the entire staff seemed intent on sending us packing as soon as possible. So if your tastes run to simple schnitzel, familiar surroundings, big hair, mullets and dad jeans, have a nice time. We won't be back. read more

Went for my dad's 80th birthday. Had made a reservation for 8 for a Saturday night at 6pm, so generally a very busy time. The service was phenomenal, everyone seemed to know it was his birthday, and congratulated him numerous times. Everyone's meal was fabulous, not a single complaint by anyone, and I had pre-arranged for a Black Forest Cake, which they make in house, as his birthday cake. They brought it out with a candle at the end of dinner, served it beautifully, ie, decorated every single plate. We have been numerous times, and every time we go, we know why we come back. Have never, ever had a bad meal, or bad service experience, even on busy days/times with groups, they just seem to have it all dialed in. read more

So I heard some great things about this place and went with a few friends last night. Needless to say I was very disappointed. I ordered the veggie snitzel with crab on top. The inside of my snitzel was mushy, the crab tasted like it was out of a can. It was very dry and bland. The asparagus seemed as tho it was cooked a few hours before then sat under a heat lamp and the same goes for the the beets. Although the portions are big, the presentation was awful, food was gross and prices were high. Our bill was $162 for four people with no alcohol or desert. The place was of old fashioned decor with doily type grandma curtains. Our waitress was older around 65 with bleach blonde hair and black roots with lots of Barrett's little girls put in their hair and white shirt with very dirty cuffs and rotten teeth. Not sure if she had drug issues in her earlier life but she wasn't presentable at all. 3 out of 4 of us didn't even eat half of what was on our plate. I will not repeat and I do not recommend this place to anyone. I'd be scared to go back into the kitchen fir fear of what I'd see. read more

I have been here many times. I have brought out of town guests here and always had a great time. I have also been here for lunch. The food is very good and service is good too. The service is classic European style with cloth tablecloths and napkins. The other complaints on here are baseless in my opinion. This last Christmas, we even had a corporate event at this restaurant and the service was fantastic. I actually thought the bill would be higher than it was. I will gladly take family and friends here, as well as business clients. My suggestion would be to make your own opinion by trying it yourself. read more

We have been regular customers at this restaurant for many years. Since new ownership, food quality has not been consistent. We attended on March 7, 2019 and the food was terrible. We both ordered the same schnitzel and both of our meals were very salty and soggy, which we did not finish eating. We did mention to our waiter, however, he really did not seem to pay any attention. He said he would mention it to the kitchen staff, but no one from management came out to speak with us and nothing was deducted from our bill. Found this place by chance. Had a quiet lunch of (pork) schnitzel and calf's liver with gravy, onions, and bacon. My wife loved her schnitzel and cleared her plate, the slightly pricey special of liver was very satisfying, not over cooked, with a couple of nice bacon slices. A lot to eat for lunch, so I left behind the barely warmed mashed potatoes and a little of the other tasty veggies which included, besides the barely passable reheated potatoes, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, and red cabbage! My better half enjoyed a specialty coffee with brandy for dessert. We left very satisfied. The 'old fashioned' decor with laced curtains, and clean crisp table cloths, was a pleasant, refreshing, and quiet retreat from the typical sterile steel and wood and plastic environments found in most newer restaurants anymore. read more

Elisabeth's is a gem amongst a sea of repetitive suburbia chains. They specialize in German schnitzel, but even if you're not a fan they have a good selection of other options - I always go for the roast duck, which is delicious. The decor is super dated and looks like my grandmother's tea room, but if you can embrace the old-worldness of it it is pretty charming. Most of the clientele seem to come here for a celebrating-a-special-occasion kind of dining experience, so dress up if you want to fit in, especially if you're under 50. Great wine list, lovely desserts (which come around on an old style dessert chart, amazing) and the service is always a cut above. Highly recommended. read more

I suggested that our group try this place out since I knew one of my friends really likes Bavarian foods and this one is fairly close by. Most of us had schnitzel and it came out pretty quickly. I had the Hunter, which has a brown gravy and mushrooms on top. It came with a choice of spatzle or potatoes, red cabbage, and a few vegetables. It was very good. The service was also very good so I have no complaints. As we left, we passed by the dessert cart - sort of regret not trying some :-) The decor inside is more on the fancy side so I do feel that I have to dress nicely hence why I don't come here more often. The price is average and good value. If you want a treat or a nice German meal, I would recommend you give this place a try. read more

On Highway 10 off 176th. Street in Cloverdale - what a find. A classic European traditional restaurant with schnitzel and black forest cake -- all house made -- all gourmet -- mmmm! A conservative place you notice at first as you walk in the door. I would feel under dressed and underage if I were to walk in this place with shorts and a t-shirt. The nice older couple that own this place were there and greeted us and everyone else as we walked in - I felt like I was coming home to have a home cooked meal with mom and dad -- I was really impressed! A special three course menu caught my wife's eye. From 4pm till 6:30pm for under $25 bucks. My wife had the snapper three course special and couldn't stop talking on how great it was for the rest of the evening. I had the schnitzel with spatzel and apple red cabbage. Both friends had the prime rib cooked to perfection. I had to sneak a taste of the Yorkshire pudding to decide if this would be my next pick on our next visit. Oh ya - it was great. The house wine made for the place and it paired well with my schnitzel. A warm french baguette with whipped butter for bread service and I knew I was truly in heaven. We all had the Black Forest Cake for dessert. Homemade in the traditional way with sour cherries -mmmmmm! We met another couple for dinner. The restaurant was not at all busy, with only 1 other table of diners. We all ordered an appetizer, which was very nice and then got our dinners. Veggies were one small piece of broccoli, one small piece of cauliflower and 2 small pieces of carrot. My husband and I each ordered a different schnitzel and were very disappointed. Our meals were not hot, in fact they were only lukewarm. The cheese in our schnitzels was not even melted or warm. It was only OK tasting, but not great. Two people in our party ordered dessert - the black forest cake and the lemon meringue pie. Again, they were very disappointed. They have had much tastier desserts elsewhere. When we asked for decaf coffee to accompany dessert we were advised they don't serve decaf. What??? What kind of a restaurant doesn't offer decaf? On our way home my husband and I agreed that it was a total non-event of a dinner. We will not be back. read more

My husband and I invited my dad out to dinner last night. We decided to go Elizabeth' s Chalet and they did not disappoint. We were seated immediately and our waiter came by to introduce himself...I can honestly say that this is the first time in a very long time that excellent service and delicious food were served up at the same time. We were impressed..from the savoury appetizers to the scrumptious dessert. If you haven't been there for a while it's time to re-visit...I have been to some of the best restaurants in North America and what I truly loved about Elizabeth 's was how comfortable it was and how I was brought back to a time where everyone was respectful, portions generous, service with a genuine smile and incredibly clean restaurant..we will definitely go back. read more

If you're looking for a really trendy Cactus Club like restaurant with servers under the age of 30 in the Cloverdale area this ain't it. When I went there last year to try out their dinner specials, the decor was very very very dated....and so is its clientele. I'm in my mid 40s and consider myself old...but the people that dine there are ancient! I thought I was in the middle of a Lawrence Welk show taping. Because of that, their prices are quite on the pricey side since their clientele have money. I remember seeing a letter posted in the restaurant praising the food signed by the President of the Super Save Group for example. Despite the prices, I don't find their food worth it.
