Shot of end of rail car.

We heard about this place via a local newspaper article and decide to give it a try. Cool little rail car building. Wasn't too keen on the "faux" wallpaper-like covering on the outside of the building. I was hoping for something a little more authentic. But still cool nonetheless. And your kids may like the "Minions" subtheme they have. Think of it as an upgrade to the Red Caboose located a little further south on Route 51. The Express has a covered pavilion with outdoor tables (including bathrooms!), "new" country music playing over a loudspeaker, and an outdoor TV screen that was (when we were there) showing a video as to how the development of the building came about. There's more picnic table and counter seating next to the restaurant building. The menu is pretty simple and the prices are reasonable. My go to sandwich is the Rail Dog - ¼ lb angus beef hot dog with sweet jalapeno spread, queso, and slices of jalapenos. Do yourself a favor - don't bastardize it with mustard, ketchup or anything else. Eat it as is. It is reaaalllllyyyyy good. We also had the BBQ Bacon Burger; again, it comes with its own sauce - also very good. I've had the Mushroom Burger - think I'll stick with the Rail Dog. Several times, we've ordered a side order of fries with cheese - the one time they forgot the cheese so I had to go back up, but no big deal. The fries were seasoned really well,...but for $2.75 with the cheese, we only wish there were more of them. Try it with the queso cheese. Finally, the milkshakes. We've had the strawberry shake, the cherry milkshake, and a seasonal pumpkin shake. All were fantastic! We needed a bigger straw for the strawberry and cherry shakes because the chunks of fruit kept getting stuck in the straw. Couple of things that we didn't like - hats off to the young lady cashier for wearing a mask when COVID was at its peak; more recently, the cook and current cashier wasn't wearing them. And, during a slow period at our initial visit, someone (whom we assume maybe was the owner), went and left some beautiful dogs out of a nearby building to "do their business" close by. So if you go, watch your step. No trace of the dogs on later visits. Biq question - would we go back? Absolutely! We have and we continue to every time we pass through Elizabeth. Food was good, people were nice, and it's a nice downtown atmosphere.

I stopped on a rainy afternoon but there were still a number of patrons. A couple of the owner's dogs wandered around, a Rottweiler and an Australian Shepherd, but they were well mannered and I'd rather have dogs around than pigeons any day. I had the mushroom bacon and pepper jack burger and fries with cheese on the side. The burger was nicely sized and everything was fresh. The fries were nicely seasoned and the cheese was a white queso (instead of like a nacho cheese) which was refreshing. I left full and felt I got good value for my $10 + tip.

The atmosphere is…read morea little antiquated, and reminds you of a 1960's trophy room, with all of the game on the walls and the old wallpaper. But, don't get me wrong--it has it's own vibe and we love it. Our go to here is the Apricot Chicken, one of the best things you'll ever taste. They usually have very good specials, and we've not had one thing we didn't love. If I had to give a negative, the only thing I would caution on is anything with the red sauce (like chicken parm, or things like that)--it's more of one of those acidic, tomato-y sauces, and it's not something I prefer. Some people love that style though, it's just not for me. I definitely suggest that you watch out for their Turkey Dinner special, they usually have it once a month. It's honestly amazing. Try their creme brulee, too, for dessert. YUMMMM. Don't skip out on their bread that you get with your dinners. Awesome home made bread with some type of awesome honey butter (or something) on top. YUM! They have the ABSOLUTE best French Onion Soup my family has ever had. And that is saying something--we like to think of ourselves as FOS connoisseurs. You cannot go here and not try it--it would be a mortal sin to miss out on it! Have always had good service, and we can't speak higher of everyone who works there. The host is always awesome, and does their best to get you in if they can. Highly recommend you getting a reservation if you plan on going, it's not terribly large, and it fills up.

The only thing I don't like are the fries. Even with an up charge they would not let me substitute a salad. The fries always seem to be over cooked. Once I returned them twice and then just gave up. Everything else is excellent. Highly recommend the French onion soup .

If you are not familiar with this place it sits where Giant Eagle use to have a store straight out…read moreof the late 70s. Now, let me tell you a story of why this place is setup the way it is. Before Pennsylvania decided to get with the times with their liquor laws Giant Eagle as well as several other companies and corporations tried their hardest to find loopholes on selling alcohol to their customers. This is the case with this place. It is a GetGo, but it is set up so differently than other locations. Prior the changes in alcohol sales you were not allowed to sale alcohol in gas stations/convenience stores, so for them to bypass this they decided to build a GetGo gas station and a GetGo café separately on one piece of land. The gas station part is setup like what you would find near a Giant Eagle. Really can't buy much at the gas island portion, but as soon as you go to the other side of the lot you have the store part. In order to sale alcohol you needed to prove that you had a café on premise or had the ability for patrons to eat at your property. That is what they did here. Allowing for beer to be sold without having to go to a distributor. The café part is close to immaculate. Everything is clean and organized. Late at night it is mostly quiet. I am always appreciative of the free air for tires which I partook in while I was here.
