I am at the point where there are so many burger spots popping up these days that it is genuinely hard to separate the good from the great and the elite. Killer Burger comfortably lands somewhere between great and elite for me.
First off, these Yelp events are always special, and I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to attend them. This event was absolutely packed. My guy Jando was at the front door greeting fellow Yelp Elites, and it is always good seeing him at these events. A representative from Killer Burger greeted me at the entrance. She was incredibly welcoming, took time to explain the menu, and made everyone feel appreciated.
Originally, I heard the peanut butter burger may not have been the friendliest option for everyone's taste buds, but instead of limiting the experience, they opened the full menu to us, which was a great move.
We were given cards to redeem a free burger, a side, and a drink. I went with the Meathead burger, fries, and a fountain drink. I had every intention of trying one of the shakes after reading another review recommending them, but unfortunately the shake machine went down right as I was about to order.
Because the event was so crowded, seating inside became pretty limited, so I ended up taking my talents outside to the patio area. Honestly, I do not think this would be an issue during normal business hours. They seemed extremely well staffed, especially in the kitchen, and despite the crowd, my burger came out in under 10 minutes.
The burger itself was very good. You could immediately tell the beef was quality. It was not heavily seasoned, but it had a distinct flavor profile that stood out in a good way. The ingredients tasted fresh, the presentation was clean, and the burger felt thoughtfully put together.
The fries were solid, though they did not completely wow me. They reminded me of a really high quality version of frozen fries you would make at home. Think top tier generic brand fries. Definitely not bad by any means, just not the standout item for me personally.
Parking was probably the biggest challenge of the evening, but I also recognize that was likely due to the event crowd. I ended up grabbing literally the last available spot next to a garbage dumpster. (Hopefully I was allowed to park there? )
One thing that really impressed me was the level of hospitality from the staff. While I was outside eating, two separate employees came over to check on me, ask how the food was, and see if I needed anything. I even had a conversation with one employee who had been flown in from another city specifically to help get the restaurant launched properly. I genuinely respect that level of commitment. It shows the company takes pride in its brand and is willing to invest in doing things the right way.
Killer Burger should be opening to the public soon, and I honestly think they are positioned well to thrive in an area like The Heights.
Big thanks to Killer Burger for hosting us and giving the Yelp community the opportunity to experience the restaurant early. A special thank you Jando and the Houston team. You guys don't miss with these events. I had a great time and left impressed overall. Well done. read more
