Seltzers & Ginger Ale + Chocolate Bars + Building 92 + Selfie of Me & Morlene
Lonnie K.

A nice, chill event that you can drop by to learn about the different businesses + mingle with other Yelp Elites in person. Upon arrival, Morlene scans your party pass and welcomes you into the small cozy space. She gives a brief gist of what's going on. There're a few art pieces on the wall and collectible items on the wall. Some ginger ale and seltzer water by the windowsill. A small tray of veggies for light bites on one of the tables. If you're able to gather more/enough people, then you can sit down to play card games like Uno or Monopoly Deals together. The spot is kinda hard to get to though. Took me more than 30 minutes trying to find my way there. Not easily accessible by the train. The walking distance to get there is technically like 20 minutes. Or maybe take the bus after getting off the train if you don't wanna walk all the way there. When you wanna leave, just tell Morlene and she'll give you a little gift bag on the way out. Thank you to Morlene & Yelp for the event invite. Thank you to the staff from different businesses for hosting the event.

Made in NYC Bodega, an incubator for small businesses, located at the Yard Opportunity Shop, Building 92 of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I had no idea this existed so I appreciate events that expose me to something new. The space is pretty cool, and I hope it gets a good amount of foot traffic. I enjoyed having the opportunity to sample the treats and engaging with the vendors before making a purchase. Ended up with an Oso chocolate bar and two bags of Doosra snack mix (which I've had in the past so I was excited to purchase). I played one game of Cards Against Humanity and snacked away with recently purchased Sweet potato and Amaranth chocolate bar. We came away with a yelp goodie bag with samples from the vendors as well.

Loved learning about the NYC based small businesses at the Made in NYC bodega. I was glad to see Doorsa there with a new dark chocolate mix. Their signature white chocolate mix is one of my favorite snacks. The dark chocolate mix uses the same spices and puffed rice but swaps out peanuts for walnuts to give a peanut and dairy free option. The spices in the dark chocolate mix ends up being more pronounced since the fats from the white chocolate aren't there to subdue them. Live Loud had samples of their candied nuts. I enjoyed the citrus pistachios and the Caribbean jerk nuts. I especially liked the jerk spice blend as it brought a good amount of heat along with the traditional jerk spices. Diablo hot sauce was also featured at the live loud table. It was being sampled along with Indian potato chips. It had had a medium heat level and a thicker texture compared to others. Oso Mexican-style chocolate had some unique flavors, such as sweet potato and amaranth, on display and Rigoberto, the chocolatier, was present. While there were no samples at the event itself (at least when I was there) a small bar was included in the goody bag. It was a similar situation with Gracie Baked where there were baked goods for sale and a small bakery treat included in the goody bag. The bodega will be open Wednesday-Saturday from 11am-7pm through November 27. It is in the ground floor of building 92 of the Brooklyn Navy Yard which can be accessed directly from Flushing Ave. It's worth going here versus shopping online since there are incentives like a free tote and hat for spending more than $40. There was also some art exhibits on display in the building.

Overall I really enjoyed the different products that I was able to sample and eventually purchase. I particularly liked Gracie Baked, and bought the baby cake that I ended up eating in one sitting. It was truly delicious! The other samples were also quite delicious, including the jerk nuts and chickpea puffs. I was a little disappointed that the Mexican chocolate didn't have any samples, because I ended up purchasing the sweet potato flavor only to realize later that it only had cocoa butter and so was more like a "white chocolate" in the sense that there was no cocoa in it. Overall I thought the event was good, but the instructions to get there was kind of confusing. I originally put in the address and it took me to a different place opposed to just writing Building 92. I think the event could've been better if we gave the vendors the opportunity to talk about their products in the larger group setting instead of just 1-1.

Oops... she did it again! Another great event by Morlene. It was a little hard to find but her directions were good. The place was cute n the vendors were nice n it was great to get to know the product n the venue. Love the goodie bags. There were table games. Love being part of yelp.

Great Yelp Elite event at Brooklyn Navy's yard. Thought it was very interesting, informative, organized, fun, and super engaging, Happily enjoyed meeting the different small business owners and heard their stories on how they went about starting their business and thought process behind their products. Most importantly, appreciated the opportunities to taste their products and also purchased a few products to take home so I can continue the wonderful experience. I'd also enjoyed how Morlene and her intern greeted us and ensured we were comfortable in the event space. Totally explored and enjoyed the variety of interesting card games. Thanks again, Morlene and the Yelp Elite community for a grand time!

Great space and great event! Loved how all the little shops had their own stories behind their products. All the displays were super engaging and I honestly couldn't help but grab a little something from each. The rustic stone-ground chocolate bars were especially good, particularly the sweet potato and Amaranth flavored one?? Never seen that before anywhere else. The lounge area behind the shopping space was great too. Plenty of room and little spots to just chill, along with mini exhibits scattered throughout that made for some great conversation pieces. Overall, really fun space to browse, shop, and hang out for a bit!

I wish I had been able to spend more time at the event. I missed the games because I got so lost. By the time I got there, there was hardly any Yelpers there, and the event was going to end in a half hour. Anyway, I did manage to purchase the jerk seasoned pecans. I'm glad I was able to attend even if it was just for a few minutes. This was a good way to showcase local businesses. Thank you Morlene/Yelp Brooklyn for organizing this cool event.

Miranda M.

The concept of this place being a small business incubator is really cool but the building itself was hard to find! I like the idea of the event itself, although most of the samples were pretty small. Thankfully, there were some Yelp provided snacks. I actually ended up purchasing a good amount of product from I believe every single vendor. It was really cool to learn a little bit more about their stories and to support local small businesses, but this was not my favorite event as it didn't have much to actually do other than spend money and play some of the board games. Not my favorite event, but still nice to connect with the community in this way and learn about the incubator space!

Took a summer break from Yelping, but I am so excited to be back! Shoutout to Morlene and the Yelp team for the invitation and for organizing this elite event. Upon discovering that the Bodega would inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard, I already mentally prepared myself for the long trek. I mistakenly put the 63 Flushing Ave into maps and neglected to see the "at Carlton Ave" notation. As a result, I entered through the other side of the yard near Wegmans, totally lost and confused. Luckily I bumped into a fellow Yelper (and new friend) and we journeyed into the yard together. After what felt like a 15+ min walk, we finally made it to Building 92. We were greeted by the most loveliest people, eager to share their products with us. I genuinely loved how each vendor took the time to explain their business, even offering samples for us to try. After a quick loop around, I ventured into the back section to find some playing cards and board games, accompanied by light refreshments and beverages. My time here was cut short since I had to catch up a flight early in the morning, but I was super grateful for the opportunity to mingle and get to know new faces! The goodie bag filled with extra food samples was the perfect cherry on the top to a chill and wholesome night.

First a little background of Building 92 where the Made in NYC Bodega Event was held: "Building 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York, is a striking museum and visitor center chronicling the 200-year maritime, industrial, and social evolution of one of America's premier former federal shipyards." Second, the Brooklyn Navy Yard " is a 300-acre industrial waterfront complex and Microcity of Makers in northwest Brooklyn, operating as an active manufacturing and innovation hub rather than a traditional residential neighborhood." Then add Elite Brooklyn Yelpies invited to taste, savor, mingle, play and shop: The Invite: What to expect: Join us at Brooklyn Navy Yard for Made in NYC Bodega, a pop up featuring the following: Live Loud Foods: candied nuts from the Bronx Doosra: Modern Indian snacks from Queens Gracie Baked: half-baked cookies, cheesecake stuffed cookie bars, brownies, and more from Brooklyn Oso Cacao: Mexican-inspired handcrafted chocolate from Brooklyn It was great to support these local artisans who are creating delicious concoctions: Live out Loud foods, founded by "Chopped" finalist Chef Keesha O'Galdez, are deliciously made and I loved the Caribbean jerk nuts, the flavor was on fire and the spice almost knocked me to Building 98! Gracie Baked: Gracie has a magic fridge filled with delicious cakes. She is based in New York that specializes in childhood-inspired sweets like dirt pudding, funfetti frosting and my purchase, Hostess Brownie. ( I just researched her and was delighted to know she worked at Momofuku Milk Bar, that crack pie.. OMG) Oso Cacao: produces decadent chocolate with inspirations from Rigoberto's, creator, mexican-american childhood. "Oso Cacao begins with the tradition of mexican-style chocolate making "and the collection includes, bourbon whiskey, mango with chili lime sweet potato and candied amaranth. Doosra: means different, outside tradition. His white chocolate and peanut snack mix is a doozy: crunchy roasted peanuts, spiced chickpeas and caramelized white chocolate. The Elites also participated in games, a snack platter of cheese, veggies and spreads was served and we received a goody bag with treats from these wonderful vendors. All in all a really nice event that introduced me to these wonderful innovators and the beautiful Brooklyn Navy Yard. Thanks to our fearless Brooklyn Community Manager, Morlene, Yelp, fellow Elites and the wonderful vendors. Here's to Brooklyn! -

I am a nincompoop. Usually when going to an event in an area unfamiliar with me I pull out the good ole google maps. In this case, that was a terrible idea. I missed the key word in the email to go to Carlton Ave. Entered on what google thought was 63 Flushing Ave (1 driveway too early) and was parading around the Navy Yard for about 45 minutes. Although, I did find building 92 eventually (the back of it) and all the doors were locked and the sides of the building were gated in. lol. Fortunately I kept walking with another fellow Yelper and we saw someone on the street point out the exit further down to us and I was set free to attend the event. It's kind of a neat building in that in addition to small businesses having their goods for sale its also a museum and had various art pieces on display. I was in sensory overload when I first arrived and probably missed that some stations had samples. But I bought an interesting spicy (what is described as tasting like hot chocolate) Mexican chocolate bar. There also were some very much needed refreshments of various seltzers and a mini charcuterie tray along with games to play. I had some cranberry lime seltzer, chit chatted, ate some cheese and explored the art installations before I left. We were gifted goodie bags on our way out. There were some Yelp pens, a Yelp scrub a dub (which I've gotten before but I think this one I am going to try to use on dishes instead of in the shower lol), samples from doosra of a chickpea peanut chocolate mix, gracie baked a mini blondie, and oso cacao a sample of some kind of peanut brittle tasting chocolate. I think I missed where the Live Loud Food nuts were but I almost debated purchasing their pistachios. These kinds of places are really cute and great for the community. Many thanks Yelp!

Very cute event! Brooklyn navy yard is always confusing to navigate but I managed to find my way there. Love supporting small businesses. I came, I sampled, I purchased!

I came here around noon and the place haven't been filled up yet but that was truly toward my benefit as my waiter, Jeff was extra attentive (yay me!). He offered me both brunch and regular menu and was very friendly and eager to assist me if I needed it. After making all my choices, he complimented and said I made good choices and whether if that was true or not, it made me felt happy. Lol. All of the food portion were huge. I ordered their wings as my appetizer, shrimp/bacon taco for entrée and tres leche for dessert. With that they also offered me some fresh fried taco with homemade salsa that was really delicious and made me wanting more even though I had to pace myself. Presentation wise, it was all instagramable. They restaurant is very conscious about presentation so that was a huge plus. As for taste, it was all good. I especially enjoy my shrimp/bacon taco as it was huge and those trio-side sauce (hot sauce, green sauce and pumpkin sauce) was just outright slamming. As for portion it was larger then life, especially for one person. Honestly I think it could feed two people as I ended up taking half of it home. Overall, I enjoyed myself, felt really relaxed, enjoyed their playlist and especially my waiter, Jeff that help tied my experience with Tiny Cantina in nicely. Thank you again to our CM, Morlene, Jeff, my waiter and Tiny Cantina for this special treat!!

This was definitely a unique event in and of itself since the last time it occurred was apparently over two years ago and that it featured actual content from reviewers for restaurants all throughout the lower east side! The event itself was unique in a lot of ways! Hosted within a small gallery space in the LES, it featured both pictures and snippets from reviews related to restaurants in the neighborhood. After hearing presentations from some members of the corporate team it was clear that the event was organized to promote restaurants in the area, as well as Yelp's reservation platform. What was really awesome is that Yelp also donated $250 for every restaurant that had a representative show up to City Harvest, which is New York City's largest food rescue organization, feeding the more than 1.2 million New Yorkers who are struggling to put meals on their tables. They also had a great spread for us to enjoy! Chicken skewers, a diverse cheese platter, and marinated beef made for some savory snacks. They also had a selections of beverages for people to enjoy while browsing throughout the space. Overall a really unique and interesting event! I'll be excited to see if they try this out for different neighborhoods, but until then thanks Ruggy and staff for another memorable Yelp event!

I hade the opportunity to chat with Elliott, the owner, who explained to me that this place used to be a bodega, and the passion he put into creating this space which feels modern and cozy while keeping elements of the original bodega. Elliott's passion for wine was evident from his detailed introduction about the business and their offerings. Beyond hosting great events, The Franklin offers a generous happy hour schedule that makes it perfect for casual wine tastings. The whole concept - inside and out - is just wonderful. I can easily see hosting a private event here or stopping by for a relaxed evening with friends. We were treated to three wines (the Grillo and Rosé were my favorites) paired with three, veggie-centric small plates (to celebrate Vegetarian Awareness Month) that exceeded expectations. The bread and cheese plate, especially the cheese with jam, was absolutely delicious. The hummus was super-fluffy and light, and the salad with parmesan shavings were crisp, perfectly fresh, and beautifully executed. Saturday Brunch-In in Throggs Neck!…read more Lena Trattoria has been in the "Neck" for two years and they have made their mark. As they continue to respond to customers' feedback they are introducing a new Luxe Brunch menu and we were granted the opportunity to check it out. On a warm Saturday afternoon we arrived and were greeted by Shah. With our plus 1's we were checked-in and then grabbed seats. As we perused the new brunch menu we also had the opportunity to take in the design of the place. Very fresh and aesthetically pleasing with a modern design. Lena, gives an open yet intimate vibe. They have the perfect back drop for a group or date night. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful as we all made our selection for the 3 courses. While there is ample to choose from, a couple of observations, there wasn't many protein options especially for people like me whom do not eat red meat or pork. As well as there were no side items listed even for an a-la-carte charge. However, I'm sure you can order additional items. The service was great even when they fell a little behind. The entertainment was amazingly perfect, a saxophonist who did his damn thing! The food was good a the drinks were flowing. Personally, I would have liked more continuity between all three courses. If you don't pick wisely you will end up with a carb-heavy meal. Without realizing it serval dishes have bread. Which is not bad, I love me some bread, but by the end it was too much. Again it's because I should have paid closer attention to my selections. I selected the lobster roll to start, fresh and nice flavor, however filling to bread ratio was not balanced. This could have just been an oversight because of the size of our event. I went with the french toast for my main course and it was perfect. While it was available, no syrup was needed. Again with no side options for a protein, they were nice enough to allow me to order grilled chicken breast. Sounds like a weird combo, but with limited options available for me, it went well. The chicken was flavorful, nicely seasoned and surprisingly very tender and juicy. Lastly for dessert I opted for the bread pudding (again my fault... too much bread). It was tasty but capacity had been reached, so I only had a nibble. Brunch @ Lena's was a lovely treat and an amazing sit down event. Thank you to the oh so fab Shah! To the manger, staff, and owners of Lena Trattoria for both their hospitality and generosity. Just A Note: Lena Trattoria gives you the vibe of a restaurant in city without the congestion pricing. It has that cozy-yet-upscale feel that makes you want to linger a little longer over your coffee. The only downside was that there weren't many substitutions available for those who don't eat pork, which was a bit of a letdown. We mentioned it to the manager, and they were kind enough to make other provisions for us, but it would've been nice if those options were already available. A few items didn't include any protein, and there wasn't an option to add sides, which would've been a great touch. The drinks were fantastic because they were fresh, flavorful, and regularly refilled. And Absolutely awesome live music! Sure, it was packed, and very crowded, but not so much so that you could not get a glass of beer or bourbon quickly throught the venue. Our group drank A LOT before we even decided to get some grub in our bellies. We even hit up a bourbon tasting class where one who shall remain nameless pretty much spilled everything onto her crotch. I even bought a viking helmet hat to wear. Drunken fun times! The food lines were another story - ridiculously long and slow moving. Sure, I had some decent pulled pork from one stand right out of a pig carcass, but the best was from the Kloby's BBQ booth where the line was the longest. Gotta give it to Monique R for holding her ground on that long line amid some drunken fools and line cutters to secure a few plates of amazingly tasty hush puppies, pulled pork and coleslaw sandwiches, and pork rib wings. Worth the wait even though it cut into our drinking time, but we needed to eat something to help soak up all the alcohol. Our group had a great time. There were so many terrific beers and bourbons on hand. Many of the staff would even fill your tasting glass to the brim. All you could consume for four hours - wonderful or insanity - it's all how you look at it. So worth it when paying half price, 2 for 1 tickets, or discounted tickets. You have to be a noob to pay full price for any of these events as there are always offers on different websites with big discounts. But to charge $3 for the coat check is kind of a money grab, even though it was nice to ditch our heavy winter gear. We came, we drank, we ate pork, we pillaged and plundered. Looking forward to doing it all over again next year. Oh, and kids, here's a tip for you all. When you are totally blasted outta your mind on bourbon and beer it's not really a great time for an Italian-Norwegian to fight with your Russian-Polish fiance' out on the street. There is just too much stubborn hard headedness in that combination for any good to come out of it.

Gluttony, thy name is BBBQ!…read more At the urging of our resident over-consumer Phil H., a bunch of us got tickets for this (third?) annual festival. I am allergic to beer, addicted to bourbon, and will be smited for eating pork, so to me this was a no brainer. The entrance line was massive, but I fortunately only waited for a few minutes thanks to Yelp teamwork. Despite some other lines when you walked in (coat check, drinking glass), it really wasn't too bad a start. The selection of consumables was incredible. La Venue is huge and there were beer stalls (and to a lesser extent, bourbon) as far as the eye could see. All the drinks were free, and considering the crowd, the pours were generous. The food selection was a little less spectacular. Although there were ostensibly many options, there was only one line in the whole place that was consistently less than 30 minutes long. This meant that I used all three of my tickets on the same plate of shredded pork and beans. Delicious as they were, I would have liked to try something else. Also, the sight of a large man in camouflage sticking his rubber-gloved hands directly into a pig's stomach to serve me dinner will stay with me for some time. In addition to the many stalls, there were several workshops, classes, and seminars where you could learn more about the products and enjoy additional tastings. It was the four shots of bourbon at such a seminar that would come to define how I felt for the rest of the night. As a standalone event and for the $85 that some people paid, the lines and food selection might be a turnoff. For the ~$55 that I paid for this ticket (and the company I was with), this was a great evening.

Huge thanks to Yelp NYC and Hailey for this wonderful Yelp Elite Experience. I've been to Kalye's…read moreother location on Broome Street, but this was my first intro to their Rivington location. I must say I was really impressed by the space, décor and ambience. The check-in and pickup was so smooth. It was a hard choice, but I ended up with the Beef Tapa and Fried Lumpia for the comp meal. And after perusing the menu, I also ordered the Sliders and Pork Skewers. The food smelled so good that I ended up scarfing down one of the Lumpia on my walk to the subway. The Lumpia was easily my favorite out of the items I took home. They come 6 pieces per order and were massive, easily double the size of normal Lumpia. The Beef Tapa came with rice, fried egg and slices of tomatoes and cucumbers. The meat was flavorful, and this was a hearty dish. The items I paid for were also quite good. The sliders came two per order in the bright purple Ube buns. So very tasty. The Pork Skewers were great and paired well with the vinegar dipping sauce. I honestly think that I prefer this location over their Broome St location. The food just tasted better. I noticed that previous reviews for this Experience mentioned that they were given Yelp bags with their order. Unfortunately, I didn't get one. I went on the last day of the Experience so I think they must have run out. Nevertheless, I'm so grateful to have gotten this delicious meal. Thank you so much Kalye for your generosity.

Kalye - Rivington is a larger dining space w/ more tables / seating & a bar area. This Yelp Elite Experience @ Kalye - Rivington granted the opportunity to order an appetizer & entree for takeout. Staff are kind & gracious & the takeout order process was easy & smooth. Once I was able to eat my dishes, the Lumpia Shanghai - Spring Rolls filled w/ ground pork & vegetables & the Mushroon Sisig - Mushrooms sauteed w/ onions, chili, & seasoned calamansi - were both flavorful & delicious. While waiting for my takeout order, Kalye - Rivington had a movie playing on their flat screen TV (volume on silent), while playing Cleo Sol's "Life Will Be" in the background. Such nice music to listen to in a beautiful place w/ colorful decor & gorgeous wall art.
