Hammocks Community Park is a neighborhood park in Miami next door to Lakeview at the Hammocks…read moreCondominiums. Park amenities include a lighted baseball field, racquetball court, benches, picnic pavilion, playground, and a recreation center that offers school break camps, youth leagues, and after school programs. The park also has teqball tables which is a new sport to me. Teqball uses a table that looks like table tennis but instead is curved. The sport combining table tennis and football was invented in 2014 by Hungarians: Gabor Borsanyi and Viktor Huszar. Borsnyi was injured playing soccer and wanted to find a less aggressive sport. Today soccer players use it for supplemental training. It has become one of the fastest growing sports in the world. After less than 10 years, more than 100 countries already have their own teqball associations. I really loved my visit to Hammocks Community Park. From the parking lot it doesn't look like much but I picked up the pathway that goes past the playground and sports fields to the back of the park where it runs next to a scenic lake. There are large trees in the back of the park offering shade and shelter to wildlife. For anyone looking for more exercise, you can pick up the 7.3 mile Hammocks Lakes Loop at the entrance to Hammocks Community Park. The paved trail winds around the lake and apartment complexes. It is ideal for birding, walking, running, bike riding, and dog walking.

Coach Ehmann was known for his love of sports, physical fitness, and the out doors. At Killian high school he was a biology and physical education teacher before taking over the P.E. Department. He championed his students and before his passing he accompanied six of Killian's most accomplished athletes to compete nationally in the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. A unique feature of this park is that it has a walking trail through seven acres of a preserved pine rockland habitat which is only found on the limestone terrain in south Florida and the Bahamas. The only trees that live in this habitat are slash pines along with an understory of palms, shrubs, herbs. Pine rockland used to cover 180,000 acres of Miami Dad County but after development, only two percent are left in public parks and preserves. During my walk through the preserve I spotted many Peter's rock agama lizards, an invasive species from Africa. They were first introduced to Florida in 1976 from the pet trade. Adult males have distinctive red heads and black bodies and can grow up to a foot long. Their range has been expanding and they are now found as far north as Jacksonville and as far south as Big Pine Key. Unfortunately they like to feast on Florida's endangered butterfly species like the Florida Leafwing and the gray Bartram's Hairstreak which also live in the pine rocklands. Scientists are currently studying the effect on the environment of these lizards and I was able to file an online report of my observations with the University of Georgia who is recording invasive species sightings. In addition to the nature trail park amenities include a basketball court, soccer field, softball field, bike path, quiet resting place, playground, outdoor fitness equipment, recreation center, tennis center and six lighted tennis courts. Winter, spring, and summer camps are offered in the park along with tennis lessons. This park is a respite of nature in urban Miami. Come out and play, exercise, bird watch, or just to enjoy nature. The park is open every day from sunrise until sunset.

There are 4 sets of swings--2 are regular swings and 2 other ones are chair-like for those who just want to sit back and recline. Parts of the playground have the blue rubber flooring and other parts are sand. There are no parking lots, but you can park along the street right by the park. Overall, this is a nice park to take a stroll, play some bball, or take kids on the playground.
