The waitstaff are friendly and helpful in their recommendations, and service is generally quick, though they can get quite busy at times. Upon a recommendation from our waitress, I ordered the Sweet Heat grilled catfish - three catfish filets with habanero pico de gallo on a bed of rice. Possibly the best thing I've had there! The catfish was excellent, and I'm not generally a huge fan of catfish. This dish, however, is worth a try and I'll likely order it again. read more

Excellent comfort food, great service, and the menu has a good variety. I came to this place twice for the food and service. The food is delicious and the portions are fair for the price you pay. The waiter I had on the first visit was a young man with excellent manners. Im not from the area and was impressed by so many young adults saying Ma'am and Sir often. I wish most people had these manners. I returned the next day and got the fried catfish that came with three sides plus a roll and cornbread. It was yummy! Service is fast and ambience is friendly. The waitress cares more for her friends sitting behind me and gives them better service than me or other tables. She also had the Gaul to serve me and my wife microwaved cheese fries. Usually the service and food is excellent. But today was the second time where we ordered and weren't served our food. Other people sat down after us, ordered, and got their food. I called this to our waitresses attention and she said she was checking on it. We waited a long time after this, debating leaving. We were finally served, ate, and when we went to pay it was the manager, and we explained what happened and our displeasure. The response was, "Oh no, I'm so sorry." That was it. Food I'd pretty good, while prices have increased it still is a reasonable value. Recently, we noticed they added a "service fee" added to the bill. That's a backdoor way of raising their prices. Just popped in while passing through. Great food and service! I had the grilled chicken with broccoli and corn. The chicken was well seasoned and cooked to perfection over a bed of rice. Ignore the food snobs. I've traveled around the world and have a discerning palate. I'm not a picky eater but I know quality food. The food here is some of the best I've ever had anywhere. It's a nice surprise to find such good quality in a small town. It is a must whenever we visit Martin Dies Jr. State Park. I can't recommend a single thing because everything is amazing. The last thing I had there was the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Amazing. Okay there is one standout - the cobbler! If you don't order anything else, at least get the cobbler. The dressing for the green salad was bottled and was not tasty. The baked potato was not cooked all the way through. The club had cheap processed sandwich meat in it instead of quality deli ham. If you have an experienced pallet this place is not for you. The food is pretty much your average East Texas fare.. Fried Catfish, Chicken Fried Steak, comfort foods. Don't expect anything creative or fancy. There is also somewhat religious paraphernalia in the restaurant itself. This doesn't surprise me much considering the area but I hate dealing with religion while I eat. Its just not something I want, I prefer if everyone kept their delusions away from my dining experience. Sell me food .. but dont push your religion on me while I eat please. The food is edible but not great in anyway. I've eaten here maybe 10 times because there are only 3 maybe 4 places to eat in this town my family lives here and when I come to visit I always tend to take them out to eat somewhere. I eat here every few months when I take road trips from the Austin area. This is definitely my favorite place to eat here. Its just simple, down home cooking for a good price (compared with Austin pricing). Having one of my favorite dinners, Pot Roast with baby carrots over rice. The best chicken pot pies in Woodville. The service is always great. As with any restaurant these days staffing is sometimes an issue. If you have to wait anything short of an hour the chicken pot pie is definitely worth the wait. It's right up there with KFC chicken pot pies. read more

Very disappointed when I opened the foam take out box. The mashed potatoes were 3/4 of an ice cream scoop in size. Then I took a bite of fish. So salty it was hard to eat. Scraped batter off to make it tolerable to eat. In addition to the meal, there were NO napkins, NO flatware, NO red sauce, and NO tartar sauce. Called the restaurant to complain. First person hung up because I told her I was calling to bitch. Second call a young lady answered "pick up window". I asked to speak to the manager and I was rudely told "we are closed " And click. Third person was having a hard time hearing me. Needless to say she hung up as well. Wasn't but about five minutes and a young man called to say he was a manager. Seems as if his customer service ears weren't turned on. Young man, I don't care that your restaurant was about to close for the day. WHEN YOU ARE IN PUBLIC SERVICE, THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. This is my new favorite southern home style restaurant. Walking in you are greeted by numerous people. We were quickly seated, even on a super busy Sunday afternoon. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the ingredients of all the entrees. Our glasses were never empty. Even if our waitress was busy, another one would fill our cups. Elijah's is probably one of the best places to eat in Woodville and the surrounding area for sure! They do home cooked country cooking here and they do it well! I have been here a handful of times because well they are always open and like I said the best option. My most recent visit I got the meatloaf. I specifically chose this because it was a $6.99 entree option and when you check in on yelp there is a deal where you buy one $6.99 entree get the second for 50% off. Steve H also got the meatloaf. I got mine with red beans and rice and mashed potatoes. Anytime I order meatloaf at a restaurant I fell like I am taking a chance. It's a chance of something horrible or a chance of something amazingly delicious. In this case it was a good chance. The meat load had a red sauce almost stew like on top of the meatloaf and it was great! Both sides were delicious! I can tell everything here is homemade like it came out of my grandma's kitchen! I have also had the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken on previous visits and they are also fried perfectly to a crisp. The service at Elijah's was far above and beyond as well. Our server was a young man, maybe high school age or late teens for sure and he was totally on top of his game. The manager on duty was awesome too! I saw him make the rounds in the restaurant at least 2 times and he did not hesitate to help out the servers if they needed it. He was definitely setting a great example for the younger employees. If you are in the area looking for a great meal then Elijah's is your best bet! They are literally as good as it get when it comes to southern home cooking. read more

Got the chicken fried steak with a side of green beans and fried okra. Food was great but service was lacking IMO. First time at an Elijah's was in Jasper, TX and the server came back and gave us more cornbread and rolls. At this location they placed the first time while we waited for our food but NEVER asked if we wanted more even when we finished it all. This was my first visit here, even though I have lived in Woodville for nearly two years. On a Sunday between lunch and dinner (3:00-4:00pm) we decided to give Elijah's Cafe a try since practically every other dining establishment, besides fast food, was closed on Sunday (Senor Toro, Captain Ron's). In many small towns such as Woodville, many businesses are closed on Sunday so that owners can be with their families and have a day of rest. The parking lot had about four cars and we wondered if they were even open. We were greeted warmly once inside and were seated in a booth. While being seated I noticed a couple eating catfish and the proportions looked very generous and well presented. The interior decor was country rustic, yet was very clean and inviting. I could imagine the place during peak hours and how grand the noise level could escalate to as there were no walls or separators in the main dining room to break up the sound. My dining partner and I both ordered the small Chicken-Fried Steak. Even being the small size, the steak nearly covered 1/2 of our plate. You can order two side dishes from the menu to accompany your entree but also please be aware of the daily vegetable selection posted over the kitchen, behind the counter. Had I noticed this earlier, or was told about the daily vegetable selection, my selection would have been different. I ordered baked squash and cinnamon apples, both which tasted like homemade and were delicious. Our Chicken-fried steaks were relatively standard and not overly seasoned. The batter was golden and was amazingly crisp, even beneath the covering of white gravy. The plating could have been done a bit more neat as any turn of plate left me licking gravy off my finger but otherwise was presented well. I was pleasantly surprised upon checking in with Yelp, that a 50% off coupon was available to use on a second entree with the purchase of one over $6.99. Quite a good deal! The coupon had some typos on it that needed clarification from the waitress, whom in turn had to clarify from management. It all worked out in the end. Apparently Woodville is not technology inclined so not many people were aware of the coupon to begin with. All in all my partner and I had a good dining experience. The food was as good as expected but did not stand above any other place I have been to. I don't know why it took me so long to stop into this place (maybe the one negative comment from 1 of 2 reviewers), but I will definitely be returning in the near future to try other menu items.
