You only get two pieces of skinny catfish pieces and 4 small shrimp served over a bed of cold soggy fries with a side of Mac n cheese that gave my daughter food poisoning and fried okra that was also cold and soggy. Took the family to Elijah's based on past reviews and it did not disappoint. They start you off with a basket of cornbread and rolls that are fantastic. Our food was just as good. Wife and I had a nice lunch. Home style cooking. Limited desert menu. No late evening dining though, they close promptly at 9pm, so don't show up on a late date. They have daily lunch specials, today was chicken spaghetti. Wife said it was really good. I had shrimp, also really good. My baked potato wasn't quite hot, butter did t melt. Took over ten minutes to get seated in an empty restaurant. Server was beyond rude. The entire staff was more concerned with the going on in the kitchen rather than their tables. So food is tasty. Portion is on small side but ok. What got me was when the bill was sat on table at the very bottom was a service charge of .75 . when I asked about it they said its for the system. This was before I was even asked if I was patting cash or credit. Multiply this by say 200 customers a day thats 150.00. With the smaller portions a chicken fried steak thats flat as a pancake then you want to charge me a service fee. Cash payers beware. Its theft plain and simple. Christian company... Whatever. Leaving 1 star because it can't be zero. Had a cockroach run across our table at lunch and waited for the manager for over 15 minutes and she thought checking out customers up front was more important than a roach scurrying across one of her tables. She told our server, after we walked up front where she was that we don't have to wait in line we could just go. I live in Austin and my mother-in-law and I stopped here after visiting my husband at the prison, and this place was EXCELLENT! Great southern comfort food at a great price. I got the Saturday blue plate special of Chicken Spaghetti for $5.99 and it was delicious. The atmosphere is comfortable and the service was pretty good too. We are glad to have found a decent place to eat in this little town other than fast food. Not much places to choose from, so I definitely recommend this place if you want something better than fast food. read more

Waitress takes drink order...My tea was sweet so she replaced. Cornbread...sweet and dry. Not good. Rolls...just rolls...second ones weren't even browned. Wanted Pot Roast Sandwich...none available....Ordered Club...OK...not presented well. All over the plate in quarters. Husband wanted Gumbo.....none available, so he got TX Chowder which was thick Potato and Corn Soup, not hot, but served luke warm. I asked for a side of Cornbread Dressing and what I received was Stovetop Stuffing.. Terrible. Glad I didn't order the Baked Chicken and Dressing special. Would I return? Not really. Nice little place with a good group of people coming from church. All were nicely dressed and that was nice to see. Love the little city, but next time with go to Cedar Tree or elsewhere. I have ate at the Jasper and Woodville locations several times. Service is great, as expected; hot food hot, cold food cold; friendly servers. This Sunday was the baked chicken special and the chicken was dry, quite possibly so since we arrived later in the evening and probably got served what was left. The female server quickly replaced my meal with another choice and allowed me to keep my side dish of cinnamon apples to nibble on until my club sandwich was made ready. No fuss. Ate here Monday night- 45 minutes from home, but well worth the drive. Restaurant was spotless, service was quick, and the food was delicious! Jaime D. was our server and he did a great job. We had: catfish, meatloaf, and chicken fried chicken- all with assorted veggies, everyone said all were yummy. We followed that up with peach cobbler, and bread pudding. My husband is a bread pudding connoisseur, and he said this was some of the best bread pudding he has tasted. Peach Cobbler was great too! I definitely recommend Elijahs. read more

This is not a "cafe" but a moderately priced family restaurant. Upon entering was greeted by hostess and asked if we wanted table or booth, which was nice. We were given a basket of warm rolls with whipped butter that seemed to have honey or some kind of sweet ingredient added. Rolls were just packaged type, but were fluffy, warm and good, especially with the whipped butter. Placed our order of appetizer sampler consisting of fried zucchini, mushrooms, & onion rings. For dinner, I ordered Grilled Catfish & Cesar Salad & hubby ordered Granny Fay's Meatloaf & house salad. Wait 10 minutes... Wait 20 minutes... Waitress asks if we'd like more rolls & cornbread. Yes, please. Wait 30 minutes....No bread brought, but we did finally get our HUGE appetizer AND our dinner salad AT THE SAME TIME. But unfortunately, huge does not mean good. With the appetizer were two dipping sauces. Your average ranch and honey mustard. The breading on all the fried items seems to be the same blah taste. I felt like I was just eating fried flour over veggies.Hubby seemed to like it better than I did. I only ate a few of each and didn't want to waste the calories or my appetite on these bland items. Hubby enjoyed his large house salad with a lot of variety of ingredients. I had a Cesar salad. Basically romaine lettuce, with what tasted to me like RANCH dressing, and shredded cheese on top. In the meantime, we have piled our salad plates & bread basket at the end of the table. This was never cleared away no matter how many times our waitress passed by. Wait 20 minutes....thank goodness we brought books to read. No plates cleared, no bread brought (never did get a chance to try the cornbread), no apologies. We gave up. Got up to pay at the register for what we did eat. Long line to be seated and to pay. This gave us a chance to discuss with other patrons, their experience. The people who came in AFTER us, received their order before us, but it was the wrong order. They ordered Chicken Fried Steak and received Chicken Fried Chicken. Luckily, no one seemed to get angry about the terrible experience. We asked the hostess if they were shorthanded and she said that 2 out of 3 cooks didn't show. This on VALENTINE'S DAY too! Although the waitress was pleasant, we felt even with all the confusion, she should have remembered to bring more bread, if for nothing else, but to keep us occupied while waiting for our meal. Our waitress also never apologized or explained the situation. I did make a point to give her a partial tip, since it wasn't her fault we didn't receive our meal. So it is unfair to to really rate this restaurant by our experience. If you don't have enough help, there's only so much 1 chef can do to make up for 2 not present. read more

My husband and I were out for a Saturday adventure and stopped in here for lunch. The food was excellent. He had the large fried catfish dinner. It's was huge and he said his catfish were fried perfect. And he couldn't eat it all. That almost never happens. I had the cup of vegetable soup. I know that was unusual but I just wanted something light. It was the BEST veggie soup. I was sorry I hadn't gotten a bowl. Our waitress was so good and made sure we had everything we needed and kept our glasses full. I was telling her how wonderful the soup was. Next thing I knew she brought me a to go of soup. Plus won't let us pay for it. I've never had that happen before. Wish I could remember her name. She was a real asset to that business. I stumbled into town on a Friday night and had no idea where to eat. Found this place on yelp, so ate dinner, liked it so much I went back for lunch the next day. The place was clean and the staff was friendly. Great menu options. Steak was excellent. Probably the best squash casserole I've ever had, oh yeah it was the only squash casserole I've ever had. I was really bummed with my order to go. This place is packed all the time and so it seems as if it is good food, maybe it's just the to go food. I had ordered the small chicken fingers, fries, broccoli and mac n'cheese. Chicken fingers were burnt, fries cold and soggy, broccoli way over cooked and mac n'cheese were the best out of the group. I also got the brownies with ice cream. These were really good, this is why they got 2 stars. I will try them again but this time will eat in to see if this will make a difference. read more

The waitress was genuinely friendly as she took our order. I was a little disappointed that the rolls were not homemade, but they were fresh. The catfish and sides were piping hot. The two large pieces of catfish were flaky and fried to perfection. The fried okra was fresh, not the typical frozen then fried kind. The red beans and rice were seasoned well. Our appetizers were hot, fried mushrooms & pickles were the delicious!! Cornbread was some if the best I've ever had!! My Philly cheese steak was top notch & everyone else was very pleased with their choices! Instant silence was we all devoured our meals! There isn't much to choose from in the way of fine dining in the city (town) of Jasper, Texas. Elijah's is most certainly the place to go. It is basically southern style home cooking with some of the high points being the Chicken Fried Steak, Catfish, and Pot Roast as well as some of the daily specials with my favorite being the Chicken & Dumplings on Tuesdays. We stopped in here after searching Yelp. What awesome food! Quick service, clean, friendly atmosphere. We both had chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. The portions were huge, the potatoes real-red-skin on variety and the beans were seasoned to perfection. This food is truly down home with flair! Everything we saw go by looked scrumptious. I recently moved to Jasper and out of the 3 times I've been to Elijah's, I didn't have a single good experience. The food is mediocre. I've had the chicken fried steak and maybe I'm too picky but there are only 1 or 2 places in the Houston area where I love their chicken fried steak and this one just doesn't stack up. The club sandwich had very salty, cold deli meat and the broccoli cheddar soup was goopy. I've had the chicken spaghetti as well and couldn't eat much of it either. I keep trying to give it another chance but this girl is just not going back. read more
