I'm sad to write this because I've been going to Elias Custom Tailoring for years and years. Elias did a couple of major saves on dresses I needed help with back in the day. Recently, the people who have worked here have been so rude! Most recently, they gave me back a dress that wasn't tailored the way I asked for, and when I pushed back, they refused to give me a discount and even insisted that the way they did it was better than what I wanted, and what I wanted wouldn't look good! The time before that, the woman helping me kept on asking when the baby was due, how far along I was. When I told her I wasn't pregnant, she told me that she had only asked because she thought I looked very pregnant. It ruined my whole day. Also - the place is so old and dingy. The screens on their changing rooms barely cover anything so I always feel so exposed when I am changing in there. I have been a very loyal customer to them for a long time but its apparently time to move on! I wish I had looked at their Yelp reviews sooner to know that it was time to find a new tailor. read more

This places closes at 6:00pm so I get off work and rush over and I arrive at 5:40p and start what is to be my last endeavor here.. mind you ive been coming here for the last 5 years.. I really wanted to loved this place a lot. but after getting lied to in the face twice, yes TWO TIMES it is hard to get the bitter taste out of my mouth. While I was changing into my suit - a customer comes in for a pick up, an alteration to a leather jacket. and from what I can hear it was done incorrectly or not to the customers liking. instead of taking it back the customer was berated and was told that if she wanted another adjustment it would be another ticket and another PRICE?!? - mind you im trying to get my suit on and wrap my head around this irreversible scenario. I brought in a rare wool vintage ysl suit that needed minor adjustments. ideally non destructive alterations to this suit because you can't find any of this material any more. I came in for a minor adjustment being taper the sleeves and taper the pants non destructive kind. I was quoted that it would be cut and my hesitation began to spike. What was suggested was the above and shorten the collar and shorten the jacket and I had gotten an estimate north of $250!!!!!! the quoted estimated pick update was late Saturday. I try and negotiate and off of $225 which was also still high but I was shut down quickly with a NO. I reluctantly drop it off and headed home. I literally asked chatgpt how much a tailoring like this should cost it gave a range for all the work done and even on the high end of each estimate I still could not get it to 250!? In all honesty I did not sleep well thinking about the price and reading reviews of this place. So first thing in the morning I drive down and attempt to pick up my suit. when I arrive I see the same person who pinned me and quoted me and asked me for suit back telling him honestly that the price was a bit high and that I would get a new suit instead. (he still had no idea what I had brought in). When I asked for it back he had the audacity to say my alterations were already complete. My anger spiked but I kept it cool and asked to please go get my suit so I can see and or try it on as I was quoted a much later pick up time. As he hangs my blazer I still see the pins in the blazer and in the pants - a sigh a relief but a realization that this individual not only lied to me about the pick up time but also weather my suit was complete or not. an absolute absurb and atrocious was of doing business. good lord. TL;DR: LOYAL CUSTOMER WAS LIED TO NOT ONCE BUT TWICE TO MY FACE!!!?! Drive however mins and take your clothes to LA vista cleaners and save yourself the headache and heartache or irreversible damage. $147 FOR NEXT DAY PERFECT ALTERATION AND DRY CLEANING. Sadly, I've had experiences similar to other reviews here. We've been coming for years and used to be really happy with the service -- quick and friendly. But over the last year or two, the quality has noticeably declined. Like another reviewer mentioned, they insisted my pants would look better shorter than I requested. I explained that I made that mistake before in listening to them and they couldn't fix it after cutting too much. Still, this man measuring me wouldn't listen, even after I repeated my request multiple times. I ended up going back to pick up my pants and taking them elsewhere. I hope the owners pay attention to these reviews -- otherwise, they risk losing more long-time customers. read more

I brought a new suit there to have it tailored and I got it home and the stitching was coming apart and it was a terrible job-- I had been going there for years and I was very disappointed-- I'd never go there again-- I do not recommend them anymore-- they used to be good a long time ago in the past-- but not now-- read more

I just got completely scammed. I could have saved myself 20 bucks and bought some good food at a local restaurant. I asked if they could sew this patch on this hat and they said it would not be an issue. All they did was heat press the patch on and charged me full price for a sewing job. I could have easily done this myself with my iron. Also it took them 5 days to just do that. read more

What HAPPENED to this place. They used to be good. I have been a loyal customer for more years than I care to count, and referred so many people to them, too, over the decades. I don't know where they're getting the guys they have there now, but the last 3 things I've taken to them have come back either not repaired at all, or not done right. Then there's a jacket they outright ruined. I still was coming back, writing it off as a fluke each time. I don't know why. I'm loyal. Today I was bringing back something else they didn't do right, and I saw 3 other customers simultaneously having the same argument with management: that something was done really poorly, or ruined. I realized, they don't deserve the loyalty. The quality isn't there anymore, and they argue about it and really don't care. Shame. read more

These guys offer MAXIMUM INCONVENIENCE for your money. They only accept cash. They aren't open Sunday or Monday. If you leave your item there and show up on Saturday with a credit card to pick up an item you need for Monday night, as I did, you're screwed. These guys are so out of touch they don't even realize they have two stars on yelp and need to change the way they do business. There are countless other tailors that take credit cards -- because that's how the economy works in the 21st century -- and they will give you your items back 7 days a week. DO NOT GO HERE. I'm speaking from 16 years of experience/history. Their 2 stars may already have had you make up your mind, so you may not even need to continue reading, but go for it if you wish: I first lived in LA from 2009-2013, and at the time they were good. Yes, I did find it weird (even back then) that they only accept cash, but didn't care as the quality of work was good and frankly they didn't have the attitudes they do now. I moved back to LA in 2022, and have had a few bad experiences since- after the last one I've decided to steer completely clear and post about my experiences. Go a few blocks further up Wilshire and you'll find Prestige Cleaners, where not only do they offer A1 dry cleaning, they also have an onsite tailor who is AWESOME. They also take Credit Card, and PRINT A TICKET!! WHO WOULDVE THOUGHT THAT IN 2025 A TAILOR WOULD TAKE CARD AND PRINT A TICKET?!?! To top it all off, their alterations are much more accurate, and they treat you like a paying customer. Anyway, back to what is wrong with this place. First of all, when you come in, all they do is complain about turnaround time. I stopped going after being berated a few times ago for 2 day turnarounds, realizing they may not have the bandwidth and found a place that does. This last time, I had 6 days, so I thought: "why not go to the place I've always known" This is what ensued: -I was first met with panic, being berated about how that is not enough time. I went on Friday, May 16th, and they said they aren't finishing anything given today until May 30th. -I said, ok, I'll go elsewhere not a problem. They then magically could do it, because ultimately what they wanted was the money and didn't care about quality of work (as they have stopped caring more recently) -As she was measuring me, she kept going on and on about how they dont have enough time. I got sick of the berating and literally said "if you cant do it, i understand, just tell me now and I'd like to go elsewhere. This is a very expensive outfit, so I don't want it done in a rush" -The response I got was: "we do oscars all the time" ....cool story..... They were supposed to shorten the pants, shorten the sleeves, open the shirt up 1/2 an inch. AND TAPER THE SLEEVES. They were also supposed to open my wifes Indian dress by one inch When I picked up our stuff, the arms were not tapered. When I pointed this error out, all I was met with was; "WE DONT HAVE TIME TO DO IT NOW"....versus saying "sorry we forgot, we'll get it done right away" I took my wifes outfit home to her, and she realized they didn't even touch it. Didn't do it wrong, simply didnt open it at all. I wound up going to Prestige cleaners, didnt even change out of the outfit from their changing room because I knew I was going straight there. They fixed it in one night with no complaints, and even did a next day dry clean. Also, there was a time 3-4 months ago where I decided to stop going when I went in to say they shortened the pants too much, and all 3 of the ladies who work there literally pounced on me saying they never do anything wrong, and if i want it fixed I have to pay. Forget the 15+ years of business. Forget that they screwed up. I have to pay. All in all, everyone who works here has an absolute horrible attitude. You feeel rushed, shorted, not important enough, and heres some final feedback: -start taking card, but doesnt shock me that you don't because you're shady -get attitude adjustments -learn customer service grand finale: -remove all the autographs off your wall, they are cheesy and ridiculous. No one cares about which celebrity Elias has done work for if those he hires fail to provide them the top notch service we are paying for. Final Recommendation: -Go to Prestige Cleaners in Santa Monica, not far from this place. read more

Unreal- I sent a friend in to pick up my last remaining two pieces left at this poor excuse for a tailor. They had handwritten in a "re-do" fee of $22 for a piece I had already paid for that had been "left" out of my last pick up. (See my last yelp.) They took my check for the remaining item repair and then refused to give my friend the coat. I unfortunately had to come in- I walked in recording video- asked for either my items or my check back. What the owner's wife did instead was TAKE MY PHONE FROM MY HANDS AND DELETE THE VIDEO!!!!! Also from the "recently deleted" video file!!!! When I started repeatedly demanding my phone back with my hand out the owner's wife literally slapped my hand!!! She then ordered someone in the back to cut the seams on the coat I had repaired- no these were not where the original tears were- they slit three seams down the inside. Meanwhile I had called 911 from my friend's phone- only when she heard them on the line did she return my phone. Their "cash only" policy is a red flag. Mr. Elias would have divorced his wife over her behavior today had he seen it. At least my items can now be repaired respectfully elsewhere. read more

I take all sorts of wild inventions for them to work on and it's always been great. Naturally there's going to be some back-and-forth with custom work but I've had a really excellent time customizing my outfits to fit me perfectly. I I take some unusual things their way. They don't take credit cards so be prepared. Checks are ok. There's sometimes a wait, so time it right. But it's kind of like going to "Cheers" or a neighborhood spot, everyone knows each other. I've had them work on top level designer clothes with confidence. read more

They did a terrible job tailoring my pants. Charged me 30 to do absolutely nothing. The waist was too large when I brought it in, and just as large when I brought them out. They were very rude on the phone and just rude in general. I also speak Farsi and could hear them speaking rudely about the guests, myself included. So I'll never be back or recommend and business. My daughter had a last minute prom dress emergency so when I asked around for a tailor, I was highly recommended to bring the dress to Elias. Needless to say, having a dress with a broken zipper a few days before prom was very stressful. We were at a point where if it couldn't be fixed in time, we'd just have to find a replacement dress. We had literally given up hope. At first they fixed the zipper which was great but when my daughter tried it, the same issue ensued where the zipper would pop open and get stuck. So we had to bring it back again. With even less time now since prom was the next day! Luckily, the experts here figured out the issue and was able to replace the zipper and reinforce the seams so it'll hold together. This was a very big, heavy, poofy, extravagant dress and the original zipper and seams were not done well. They were able to fix and ensure no matter how much movement or dancing, the dress would not fall apart. Seriously, whatever they did it all held together with industrial strength. And all done super fast so my daughter made it to prom in time! I'm actually very surprised to see the low stars they have here. My own father was a tailor back in the day and my mom was a seamstress so I know quality work and the costs that accompany that. Will always come back for all my future tailoring needs now. If I could give a zero I would. Absolute worst worst worst do not go here! Had them tailor a $170 bathing suit to adjust length of one-piece torso and they completely butchered it! Not only did they tell me it wouldn't be ready for 4-5 days from drop off but when I picked it up they hadn't even started on it. They rushed to do it that day and completely cut it too short and never tapered it so it fit properly at the crotch. So now I can throw my $170 suit out as it no longer fits and can fit a child. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER I was a loyal customer of Elias for over a decade. After this experience, I will never go back. I brought a dress in with two weeks of lead time for a wedding and asked that they take the fabric in slightly, so it wouldn't gap in the armpits. When I returned, the dress was so tight around my breasts that it pulled and showed my bra. They said they would let it out. I returned again and it was still uncomfortably tight, with the fabric under my breast now not laying properly. The women gaslit me, telling me it was not too tight and not pulling, but agreed to fix it. I picked it up for the third time but did not have time to try it, as I was leaving town the next day to attend the wedding for which I purchased the dress. As you can see, the fabric still pulls and the part they "fixed" looks wonky. I called to let them know I am dissatisfied with the dress, as it is still not right and they repeatedly told me it looked perfect and if I do not think it is right, to bring it back. I had been clear with them SEVERAL times that I need this dress for a wedding. The women I spoke with went so far as to say that they have footage from the store cameras showing it looked perfect. When I told her that I had just taken pictures of myself in the dress and would like to send them, so I could show what is wrong, she then said "cameras can be misleading." She also told me they lost money on this because they put in $120 of work but only charged me $42, as though this is somehow my fault. I am now out $100 for the dress, $42 in tailoring, and $25 that I paid to have a new dress sent via fedex so I have something to wear in time for the event. I understand that not everything works out perfectly, but the customer service I received was horrific. I was told over and over again that it was perfect, despite me showing where the fabric pulling. Every time they "fixed," it, they creates new problems. They were incredibly rude and condescending, speaking to me as though I am not competent enough to decide whether or not a dress is uncomfortable. read more

It took me a long time to write this review because frankly I was appalled after how many years of coming here and giving them my business how I was treated. They have ruined more than one of my pieces, one time even not doing a simple task and only reason I took a dress in - hemming the bottom since it was too long. I picked up the dress and as I tried it on at home realized they had PINS holding it together and the job was never done. However, this last time combined with the way I was treated makes me wish this poorly ran business would close the heck down. I brought in a very expensive Ralph Lauren jacket. Gore and I discussed making it shorter but NEVER did we talk about removing the pockets. Mistakes happen I get it, but the way they removed the pockets is just mind blowing. My very expensive blazer has to now go in the trash. What this company needs to do is get their greedy behind together and reimburse me for the cost of the whole blazer considering they ruined it. A month has passed since this happened and I am still fuming about it. The blazer has holes literal holes where the pockets once were, I seriously cannot believe these guys have jobs. I could have done a better job myself removing pockets. I will absolutely attach a picture and a video for everyone to see. When I called about this, Gore, the character who I have worked with for years acted like it's no big deal. Seriously, I can't say what I want to say to him on here. always pass by this shop when I get Starbucks next door and came in recently with an emergency. The zipper on my bridesmaid dress broke (3 weeks before the wedding so yes, I was panicking) and needed to be replaced. They said it wouldn't be an issue and fixed it for me. Came back 2 or 3 days later and it was fixed, new zipper is working just fine. There were quite a few customers getting clothing altered, and they seemed like regulars so I'm guessing they do a good job on that as well. Parking lot in the back is a plus! read more

I would never go back. I've used Elias for a few years. Each alteration takes five visits: 1) drop off for fitting 2) go back when due and they say not ready; 3) go back again to pick up; 4) realize at home they're not right and take back; 5) pick up. Today they tried to return these pants and tell me they're fine, that the billowing in the back is necessary for movement. I've seen them do this to other customers - it becomes a charade of how they did nothing wrong. Today I took my pants and asked for a refund; she gave me half because her workers "don't work for free". But they did it wrong and I have to go elsewhere?? She tried to withhold the whole refund because they "rushed" the alterations - but I didn't ask for a rush. And they still did it wrong. Look at how many 1 star ratings this place has. Since I was in a rush I used them. The prices are high and their service is horrible. I had them shorten few pants, picked them up before they close. Tried them at home and since they were still long, called and asked if they can redo it. One of the ladies said just bring them back and we will do it at no cost, when I went back in, they said they will share the cost with me!The owners have a bazar mentality. Would not recommend based on their bait and switch practice. Check the finish work and check what you are charged since the only take check and cash. read more

I am giving Elias Tailoring no stars. They are argumentative, deceitful, misleading, and rude. The owner puts her personal opinion above the customers request. After my dress was ruined, and I was belittled , I left with it and took it somewhere else that I felt truly listened. I have never experienced this before, the customer is always right , but not is this case. They were actually accusatory. I never got my Money back or partial compensation. I rarely leave negative reviews but today was three strikes. I've been to this location 3 different items and each time there has been an issue that needs to be fixed which leads to having to come back on a second trip. 1) I brought in a bridesmaids dress that was too long and needed to be hemmed. The length was measured while I was wearing the heels I was going to be wearing and I said numerous times that I wanted the dress to touch the ground. When I picked up the dress, it was 4 inches too short. Thankfully there was still a bit of material left in them hem that could be let out. 2) I brought in a bathing suit that I wanted to add cups to. The lady in the front showed me the type of cups that would be added and we discussed that they would make a small cut from the inside to insert the cup and stitch it back closed. When I tried on the altered bathing suit, there was a flimsy fabric (too thin to be called a cup) that was loose and bunched up and the bathing suit had been cut and stitched from the outside. After bringing the suit back they inserted the correct cups and fixed the messy stitching. 3) I brought in a poplin cotton drop waist dress that needed to be taken in at the waist. I tried on the dress and the lady pinned the material to the agreed upon size. At pick up, I tried on the dress and they had added an entire elastic waistband which made the dress look cheap and changed the shape of the dress. They were able to remove the elastic without visible damage, but adding an elastic band was never discussed. The lady in the front said "they must have confused this with another order".... There seems to be a major lack of communication within the staff because the result when I pick up the item is not what I had requested and what was said was going to be done. The only reason I'm giving two stars is that the issues have been able to be fixed, but it is incredibly frustrating to always come back to issues with what are fairly simple requests. I would be cautious in bringing your valued items here since the lack of communication may cause major damage/issues. read more

I would not use again and could not recommend to anyone. Poor work, no accountability. I brought in 2 dog harnesses and asked that 1" of elastic fabric be added to the middle of each strap. After leaving I had a tinge of concern that they just said yes but did not understand what I wanted. I then went back, re-explained and they said they did understand (they took notes etc.). When I picked up the harnesses, I saw it was visibly off center. The woman in charge said no it wasn't, then measured and admitted it was. She said it was a miscommunication. Now it was not repairable as the strap was already cut. I also asked if they had a stronger elastic as the one they used was flimsy and it was very thin. I was told that there wasn't a thicker elastic and I didn't request double (I was unaware it was needed/an option). I then said I would buy and bring back new harnesses (at my expense) so this could be done again properly, as requested and they said sure, but they would have to charge me again. I could not believe this! I left the harnesses to add the extra elastic fabric so I could use them until new ones arrived. And they then sewed the endings on top of the existing stitching, instead of just beyond it to and made the sewn ends too thick to smoothly fit through the straps' sleeve/conduit. I just left. My wife had been using this place for almost 50 years. It's lost it's reputation for us, and based on reviews on this site, many others as well. read more

I just moved to Santa Monica and chose to try Elias as my tailor because they are the "tailor to the stars". I brought in my favorite pair of jeans, which already has over a dozen expertly patched holes that look like quality distressing. I explained that I wanted the new holes patched according to this technique: right stitches, matched thread colors... and pointed to the numerous examples. When I returned some days later, the holes were patched with half-ass inch-wide zig zag patterns, totally inconsistent with the rest of the jeans. I mentioned this to the cashier, who notified one of the tailors in the back who came out and grumbled under his breath. Then the head lady in charge came over to say "we can't do that type of stitch". Not sure how any "stars" would find this kind of work acceptable, much less be willing to pay in cash. So I just told them to remove the patches and came back hoping they would either make it right by doing a proper job or by at least refunding me. Neither happened. Paid $44 for half-ass work that I had to have them undo and they didn't care one look. Don't visit this business if you really care about the quality of your clothes' tailoring! read more

$800 dress destroyed I've never left a review like this but I want to seriously discourage anyone who has any item of value or that they care about to ever go here. For a hem or a broken zip - I'm sure it's fine but for anything that requires skill or care do not trust them with your precious items. They completely destroyed an $800 dress to the point I had to throw it out. I needed a minor adjustment to the bust, when I went in they said no problem and actually began unstitching it slightly on the spot. They must not communicate well with one another as the individual who ended up handling the dress did something extremely beyond what was requested and stripped it of every dart which was critical to giving it a really beautiful shape around the waist and hips. I could not believe someone would make such careless adjustments to a dress and think that it would fit any body type? The adjustments made no logical sense and when I went to collect it it had been turned into $800 maternity wear. When I took it back and showed them I was gaslit & made to feel like it was my fault. They'd damaged the dress beyond repair and could not un do their own poor work. There was no ownership or apology and they tried to play down how bad it was. That seems to be their strategy, deflect, play it down, and make you feel stupid for caring about your clothes. Don't do it. read more

I just took a shirt, which I had had some button holes put in, to Charles, my dry cleaner, at Rene's, and he showed me that only two, very poorly made button holes were made on this particular shirt. i assume, the same two button holes where done on the other. I was charged $90 for four small button holes. I would have stopped payment on the check, but due to my loyalty and fondest for Elias, I did not. It had nothing to with him. It was his employee who is impersonable, rushed, and basically has a couldn't care less attitude. I will never go back to Elias, especially as long as this woman is working there. read more
