I had to settle for a date 2 weeks out but was eager to see how they would clean me up. Carmen was"SUPERB"! I looked like Sasquatch and have always been reluctant to trust a stylist I don't know. Comes from damage done to my ponytail by a redneck barber in 1969. I asked Carmen to lighten my load and make me half my age and she did just that. Typically when barbershops engage in this kind of discriminatory behavior they try to do it covertly. Here at Sandy's---they are open about their refusal. I came into the barbershop to get a standard men's shave. I am quite literally bald headed, so I made it clear up front that the only service I would need is a standard shave of my beard. I was told, "We do not cut coarse hair." Never mind the fact that the hair on my beard is no "coarse" than any other human being's hair, simply being a black person rendered me illegible from receiving a haircut. The incident occurred with the shop's owner. After I highlighted the fact that discriminating against certain male customers for standard, public services (like a shave) was unacceptable--the store's owner/manager decided to lecture me about how this was not "about race." The gaslighting was disgusting, and the establishment is a complete dump. On my way out, the pitiful owner had the nerve to ask me "not to come back." The only reason I would be returning back---is to bring my lawyer. Moral of the story: if you are reading this and you are a client of color, you should take your money elsewhere. This shop has a racial discrimination lawsuit on its way.

My hair didn't hold the perm past the first few days, with some waves. However, Bethuny was able to layer it in such a way that the waves came back up and styled it so that I would get a sense of how to restore the perm. Wow... Pure magic. My hair is as thick and straight as it gets so I didn't think it was possible, but she managed to think her way around it. Everyone complimented my hair, she gave it a lot of volume through the cut. I've also gone in for a free color consultation, which I highly recommend and doesn't hurt. It takes 10-15 minutes. She educated me on a lot of basics of coloring so that we could communicate with it. Bethuny gave me a very clear picture of what I would have to do in order to achieve certain various tones and consulted me on the best decision combinations in order to keep my hair healthy. Not to mention I'm a huge fan of the decor and DIY punk and rockabilly vibes. If only I had the funds, I would definitely go to Glamourama for color. The prices are reasonable, it seems, for the job they do. I've seen their work and am astounded. If I lived closer, I would come for frequent cuts. So I recently decided to give Hue Pepin's shop a try. As Hue was recommended to me by a friend, I was a bit nervous when I was welcomed by another barber (I think his name is Lucas?). However, after showing some pics and describing how I like my haircut, this personable and pleasant young man meticulously proceeded, cutting my hair to my complete satisfaction.
