The way these businesses work is confusing and really frustrating at times. I asked 3 businesses to…read morecome checkout my garage door, which was shutting part way and then going back up sometimes. The first to come by, which I was not home for at the time, gave us a large quote recommending we upgrade the whole system, fine but we wanted other quotes. I had talked to Eden over the phone earlier in the morning and he had said he would be sending one of 'his guys' over, so I had thought the first company that came by was Eden's guys, and when he called me, I told him his guy had come by and we would have to think about it. When I came home, another guy arrived at the same time, this actually turned out to be Eden's "guy", from a completely different, unlicensed "company", which we didn't realize at the time. We show him the problem with the door not closing all the way sometimes and we let him take a look. He starts pushing the garage door up from where we stop it and lo and behold, there is some kind of slack on one of the cables, which apparently means one of the spring needs replacing. I ask him how much that is to fix, and he explains he doesn't know until he checks the diameter of the spring, which he needs to remove the entire spring to find that out, which costs $350 cash. We ask him how much a spring is and he says it varies from $120 to $250 depending on the quality. Fine. We thought we were working with someone reputable so we agree to start. He suggests we replace both, since the other is probably close to gone too. Fine. After taking off the springs, he lays out the entire garage door system and says we had 'more damage' and that it was going to cost between $2500 to $3600 now depending on the springs, since taking off the rod apparently revealed some invisible damage. Btw, they only take cash, or part cash and a check. I tell him to put everything back the way it was before he started work, and he says he can't. After we agree to $1400 to finish the job, we test the opener, and it doesn't work. Apparently, the automatic system, which was actually working perfectly before work started, also needed some repair, possibly replacement. We kicked him out and in hindsight we should have called the cops. It took a while to track down, but it turned out he was sent by Garage Doors 4 U and Eden L. The fact that he didn't even know who he sent after we had talked says everything I need to know. I will be fair, since we had the work looked over by a licensed contractor later, and he gave it the ok, though we'll never actually know if we really needed new springs and new blocks.
