Got tuned into the need to check my fire extinguishers after lately seeing so many deaths and…read moredestruction by house fires in the news. Without an education about inspection or servicing my extinguishers, I just assumed the units would work when needed and I would know instinctively how to use them. So, 'attending to my home's extinguishers' never made it to my to-do list. After getting a brief education on youTube, I learned how critical fire extinguishers are to home safety. Since Fire Departments are so enthusiastic about smoke, carbon dioxide, and radon detectors, I was disappointed to learn that not only do they not execute recharging and inspections but the service rep had no referrals. Recommendations to homeowners regarding fire extinguisher protocols, inspection, and usage should rate the same attention as their smoke detector promotions. Workshops on when and how to use fire extinguishers should be standard in our schools, hospitals, airports, businesses, home owner insurer inspections, etc as well as part of our Fire Departments' community education programming, locally and nationwide. Think about the potential exposures to fire during and after impacts on structures by extreme weather events. Moreover, so many vehicles have recalls with warnings of spontaneous combustion while driving and/or when garaged. Even airplanes, electric vehicles, and electronic devices have increased instances of battery fires and explosions. Domestic airlines just established a mandate that all battery packs and battery-driven devices be displayed and NOT packed in cargo OR in overhead cabin luggage due to recent fires. Nonetheless, my online search turned up F&M FIRE PROTECTION with a five star rating for inspection and recharging fire extinguishers, among other services. This company should be on the Fire Department's resource list for local fire extinguisher services. Though I figured my units were too old to recharge, rather than default to an online purchase, my choice to visit in person was the right move. This location is a great value if you are in the market for fire extinguishers, inspection, and/or recharging. After shopping by browser, I found per unit rates to be same as online with the added value of receiving a full understanding of related data points you may not have considered. Though the building is tucked away in an industrial park, GPS can get you there without a hitch. Worth the side trip to be struck by the high-spirited, personable attention you get, delivered by a light-hearted team with a gallery of antiques on display.

After talking to plumbers, I was told to seek out a fire sprinkler company. Metropolitan Fire Protection was great from the get go on responsiveness, price and service. They promptly respond to emails. They explained their cost estimates and discussed permit requirements. They explained the process and answered all of my questions. Their repairman was quick in removing the firehead and installing a new one. They also charged a lot less than their estimate. There are not a lot of fire sprinkler companies that do residential work. I recommend them.

Unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience with this company due to unclear and…read moremisleading billing practices. The company performed routined testing at building during the scheduled window we were notified about. During that time, my smoke detector went off, which I assumed was part of the testing. The noise stopped afterward, but the next morning the detector began going off every few minutes around the same time the company was there the day before. I called Sam, who said he could hear the detector in the background, he was busy so he offered to have his girlfriend stop by to check it at no charge. She came out, pressed the hush button and left. The detector was quiet until the following Monday, when it started going off again. I contacted Sam again and he said he would come replace the battery if I purchased one and told him when it was ready. I specifically asked what he would charge me for the visit and he told me $75, which I agreed to. For context, I have vaulted ceilings and the detector is in a hard-to-reach area, which is why I asked for help rather than changing it myself. Sam came to my home, replaced the battery in about 10-15 minutes, I paid him $75 as agreed and he left. I thought everything was good to go. About two weeks later, I was shocked to learn that my HOA received an invoice from Sam for $720, which was then passed on to me (this was a charge from when his girlfriend simply pressed the hush button). This was never disclosed to me upfront. Had I known he would bill the HOA hundreds of dollars in addition to my $75 payment, I would never have agreed to the house call. After disputing the invoice, Sam eventually agreed to close it if I paid $600, bringing my total cost that I paid to be $675 just to have a battery changed. This experience felt extremely unfair and misleading. At no point was I told that the visit would be billed to the HOA, nor that I would effectively be double-charged. Transparent pricing is basic good business practice and that did not happen here. If this company only works through HOAs or bills associations by default, that should be clearly communicated upfront so homeowners can make informed decisions. I'm sharing this so others can avoid being surprised by unexpected charges after the fact.
