It's very dark as you walk in (underground) and the atmosphere is so nice with the candles! Pros - great music, and it's a good datey place I'd say! We went at 6pm and it was still light when we got out- which was kinda weird but also good! Cons- they don't serve food. Note: All their cocktails are sour (I asked for something not sour and the staff said all their drinks are strong and sour) Tip; it can get quite chilly inside. We went here on a Friday night at 6pm for a show and some drinks. Had the Vodka Martini with TItos and The Old Fashioned with Basil Hayden. Both were well made. The music was very fun and good quality. We listened to the quartet, the singer has a beautiful voice and the drummer is an incredible talent. The piano player and the base players are excellent too. It was a great night of music at the Elephant Room. Worth a visit. read more

Since 1991, Jazz fans have been going to this underground club in Austin to hear live music every night. It's a cozy, narrow space that's found below street level right off of South Congress. Fans should bring their jazz hands to the Elephant Room and guess what? No cover on a Thursday night ... maybe no cover ever?! (Unlike in SF ... another reason to move to Austin?!?) Love the vibe here: dark, moody and casual all at the same time. It's like a cross between a dive bar and a lounge. I was visiting Austin and discovered the Elephant Room through a search here on Yelp; I love jazz and cool jazz clubs are few and far between so it was a no brainer. I read that it gets pretty busy so I arrived early around 6:30 on a Friday evening, there were only 15 or 20 people in there at the time so I easily snagged a spot at the far end of the bar right near the stage. It started filling up quick though and by 8:00 there was a line at the door. There were 2 bands that night (one starting at 6:00 and one starting at 9:00) and both were fantastic. The bartender serving me was also great, I didn't get his name but he was the gentleman with long silver hair, he was super friendly and mixed one of the best negronis I've had. I only intended on staying for an hour or two but I was having so much fun I ended up staying for nearly 4 hours! Overall great vibes and I'm so glad that I got to experience it, if I'm ever in town again I'll definitely go back! read more

The Elephant Room is one of my favorite Austin intstitutions for Jazz music for the last 30 years. Amazingly, it is open 365 days a year from 6 or 7pm to 1 or 2 am. There is $0 cover charge on most days but friday and Saturday can be $7 cover however tipping the band is always encouraged and considered customary. The drinks are very reasonably priced. The servers are friendly. The music here is top notch! Monday night is my favorite and is always the Jazz Jam starting at 9pm with a variety of local musicians from students to top pros mixing it up and creating a spontaneous and lively show as the night goes on. Many musicians wander over to the Elephant Room after gigs earlier elsewhere to round out their nights. The front tables and bar area nearest the stage are meant more for a listening environment and the back area for talking with your table so either kind of evening works here and is great for dates. Men's restroom is on the right of the stage and women's is on the left. Dont be embarrassed to walk past the stage at any time because it is casual environment here. There can be an entry line on weekends around 9 to 10 but weeks and earlier and later are normally accessible. read more

A cozy venue, nice to listen to music. Although if you want to really listen, sit towards the front as the ambient noise from the back interferes with listening. I especially enjoyed Sarah Sharp on Thursday nights. read more

I love jazz, so I definitely wanted to find a jazz bar so I could enjoy great music and drinks. Elephant Room has a cover charge after 8PM, so be wary of that. It's quite hard to get someone to you for drinks, so try to get their attention before the music starts. The band we listened to during our evening was just ok. Still enjoyed the jazz, but the drummer lacked jazz experience, so his flow didn't go too well. I would love to find another jazz bar in downtown Austin, but maybe I'll come back here someday :) read more

Awesome atmosphere and overall aesthetic. However, the staff were NOT kind. My girlfriends and I were yelled at by the host stating "Do you know I can hear you from the host stand?". Our server also came up to us and said "You need to keep it down, my boss is getting really mad at me because of y'all". Also not to mention, we were reminded by the host upon entry, and our server THREE TIMES about how we only were allowed to stay for two hours. The server came up to us three different times to tell us how much longer we had until we needed to leave. Overall very unwelcoming and the server was also very offended we didn't want to hear the entire cocktail list explained. I get you're proud of your work but we came for drinks and a good time. Had a great time at this bar/jazz club. The bartenders and crowd were really amicable. Nice beer selection and the music was very fun. I enjoyed the live music and I am by no means a "jazz enthusiast" and I thought the music was great. I loved a bunch of things about this spot. First, it was completely without pretense. So casual and all were welcomed. It was basement level so be careful on the stairs but you don't have to wear heels here anyway. Great drinks here but I had a draft hefeweizen, served in its "own" craft beer glass. Some people like that. Thirty stars go to the opportunity to come here and sit at the bar, not the burden of a table. I really liked sitting at the bar, chillin, drinking and listening to music. If you sit at the bar, you can't really see the band but I'm not there to see just to listen. This is tertiary but worth mentioning: we can here on our first night in Austin and I was able to get the free magazine "Time Out Austin" here. I was visiting this establishment from Los Angeles on Friday the 5th of January 2024 and hoping for a memorable experience. I did not get this at all. I was highly disappointed! For a jazz club, it lacks diversity and a warm friendly welcome from people who are not "white". This particular evening, the headliner was paying tribute to the father of Austin jazz (an African American), yet the band and its audience were all white, with the exception of my party of three. And as we even go downstairs we were practically greeted with glares as if we truly didn't belong there at all. Very disappointed. read more

If you are over 30 and looking for a relaxed bar to listen to great music- this is the place for you. This place is located in the basement with 2 restaurants above it( the sushi place is awesome!). We were able to grab dinner and head downstairs for a few drinks as we listened the live band. Things I loved: This is a hidden gem of a bar. Not too crowded( we went midweek) and not a bad seat in the house to watch the band. A great selection of drinks and service was perfect. I also appreciated that the guy running sound for the band was constantly adjusting the sound for optimal enjoyment. I also loved that bar ambiance was moody and dark with plenty of candles and cute elephant light fixtures. Prices for drinks were also standard and not overpriced IMO. I also loved how no one made us feel rushed to order more drinks or close out our tab. Things that did not bother me, but to consider: No food menu- not an issue for us because there's plenty of restaurants around. Bar bathrooms- not the cleanest bathrooms I've ever been to.... But it's a bar, what do you expect? If I lived closer this would totally be my Wednesday night hangout spot. It reminds me of what you would expect from a dive bar jazz joint in New Orleans. Like the place in LaLa Land. Drinks are excellent and their beer choice is unbelievable - caters to the beer connoisseur and swilling-lover alike. I had a Chimay triple (beware of the higher alcohol content in some) and it was served perfectly in its chalice. Such a fun experience. Completely unexpected.
