My son has a strong aversion to shots, and the doctor told us this was a painful shot given in the rump. He should not have discussed that in front of my son - it only built more fear and anxiety. When the nurse came in to give it, she was very short with us and yet again told how painful the shot was going to be. Of course, my son was not wanting to cooperate then for fear. The nurse got mad at my son and said she was not going to fight a "half-grown man" to give a shot. This infuriated me - my child is on the small side, not a half-grown man! Plus, things could have gone much differently if the doctor and nurse hadn't discussed everything in front of him, and the nurse approached things much differently. I would think most people know that you have to handle children differently from adults!

Absolutely unacceptable experience with Jonathan Borella, NP…read more I went to Cullman Regional ER with severe, constant stabbing back pain after lifting a heavy object. I had NEW numbness in my left thigh, visible muscle twitching near my knee, and pain that was progressively getting worse. I repeatedly explained that my symptoms were worsening, yet I was treated like I was wasting everyone's time. Jonathan Borella decided it was sciatica, called my X-ray "perfect," and acted as though that settled the matter. When I asked how an X-ray could rule out a problem with my nerves or a herniated disc, his response was, "I'm a trained professional. I know what I'm doing." Well, being a trained professional should also include knowing how to communicate with patients and treating their concerns with basic respect. THE MOST SHOCKING PART? HE NEVER EVEN EXAMINED ME. No physical examination of my back. No checking the sensation in my numb thigh. No checking my leg strength or reflexes. Yet he was apparently confident enough to dismiss my concerns and tell me it was sciatica. I received Toradol and steroid injections, and my pain was actually WORSE afterward. I continued reporting that my symptoms were getting worse, not better. Instead of feeling reassured that someone was investigating what was happening, I felt talked down to for asking reasonable questions about my own body. I was not demanding an MRI just because I wanted one. I was asking for an actual assessment of new neurological symptoms and an explanation of how the cause was being determined. A "perfect" X-ray does not show you whether a disc is herniated or whether a nerve is compressed. When I questioned the assessment, I was met with an attitude instead of a meaningful explanation. I ultimately left against medical advice because I had lost confidence in the care I was receiving. Patients are not inconveniences. We should not have to beg to be examined, defend why we're concerned about NEW symptoms, or accept condescending remarks simply because we ask questions. Jonathan Borella may be confident in his assessment, but confidence is not a substitute for examining the patient sitting in front of you. The bedside manner was unacceptable, the communication was dismissive, and this experience completely destroyed my confidence in the care I received. Cullman Regional needs to take patient concerns and provider communication seriously. I would not want another patient to leave feeling as unheard and dismissed as I did. I would steer clear of this incompetent "healer".
