When we bought a few hundred dollars of accessories from him for our e bikes he expressed his disdain for fat tire bikes. Since I could get to Kevin's shop with my slow leak I went there. He was just sitting staring at a computer screen. He looked at my bike, made it clear he didn't like it, and said he would check the valve stem. In the process he greatly worsened the crack and the tire lost all air. He attempted to fill it but it wouldn't accept any air. Left with the prospect of pushing my bike home I asked him if he would order the tube (said he doesn't carry fat tire tubes). He said he didn't want to and if he did, it would be at least a week and a half to get to fixing a flat tire. Should he have said if he touched the tube it could lose all the air and be unrideable, I think so. Since he was trying to help me am I ok with what happened. Yes. Not at all ok with him watching me push my bike up the steep hill behind his shop after he let the air out of the tire. This to a local who has spent a few hundred dollars there. read more

I called looking for a fat tire ebike - and the guy who answered (Kevin?) said those bikes are "dumb." He went on to say that riding on the beach or on snow is also "dumb." I bought an Aventon Pace 500 from them. Battery had sparking issues. Aventon replaced battery but issues continued. I called Electric Cyclery and spoke to Kevin who sold me the bike. Told me I should go back to Aventon since I had already dealt with them. Then proceeded to get a very rude tone with me. All I wanted to do was have him look at it. Shouldn't he be the one taking care of my problem, or at least trying to help? Won't recommend that business. read more

Called to ask about a specific style of bike (Fat tire) and was told he doesn't carry them because he thinks they're 'Stupid". Then went on to tell me why their stupid. Lol Interesting way to call a potential customer stupid and loose business. Guess his shop is killing it, so what's a lost sale. I would guess their after sales service would be similar so dodged a bullet buying anything there. Maybe in the future explain the shortcomings and strengths of a product to a customer and try to help them make an educated choice rather than calling them stupid. Perhaps it wasn't the only style of bike I was looking at and if you weren't so rude and aloof, you may have been able to sell me on another more suitable bike. Just my two cents, there are plenty of bike shops and they all carry the same stuff more or less, so customer service should be your selling point, unless you don't need the business then carry on! read more

Bought a new Yamaha Moro pro from them over the internet .. I've owned many Yamaha products so didn't expect any issues but 20miles into first ride the freewheel locked up. I took it apart showed that the hub retainer ring and backed off and ground into the back of cassette sent pics to Kevin who I dealt with over email. He stated he would get me support from Yamaha under warranty then he just ghosted me. Never responded to multiple email or called back. If you need any support don't deal with this shop. Quick to take the money but worse than no support is the lying to and ignoring of customers. read more

This is only about Electric Cyclery refusing to take a return of the unopened box containing a Luma Street MIPS helmet, black U 56 - 61cm that we ordered by mail order from them. As soon as we opened the shipping box and saw the helmet box with a photograph of the helmet on the outside, we realized that this was not what we wanted. Including shipping from Laguna Beach, California to Fallbrook, California, the cost to us was $294.35. Since our request to return the helmet was denied, our only recourse was to offer it for sale on eBay. We are not stating that any claim of return policy was made before we placed our order with Electric Cyclery. We are simply stating that in this era of merchants advocating for customer satisfaction with a return policy, this merchant did not accept a return. read more

My husband & I went here & purchased two electric bikes from Kevin totaling over $6000. We only had the bikes for a few months when one of them started having mechanical issues. We took it to Kevin twice and he made adjustments both times with an attitude that we did not detect when we were purchasing the bikes. Each time after Kevin would attempt to repair the bike, we would take it home & have the same experience which was a hard breaking effect while riding up hills. Riding up hills was our whole purpose for purchasing these powerful electric bikes in the first place. After our third conversation with Kevin he acted very annoyed & threw his hands up. We didn't appreciate the attitude we would endure each time we would have to call him & tell him his repair did not fix the problem. We didn't feel that we deserved this so we decided to look for other options. We took the bike to another bike shop in Laguna and explained to them the situation.... they worked endlessly for a year with the bike company directly trying different repairs, none which ended up fixing the problem. They eventually were able to get my bike completely replaced with a brand new one! This is the kind of service I expect when making a large purchase & it failing after only a few months. Do yourself a favor & go down the street if you want service & expect them to honor the warranty & help you through the process! read more

This is an amazing shop. I purchased an Aventon Level there last year. Kevin was very helpful in helping me decide which model would be the best fit for what I was looking for. My bike was mid-level in pricing & performance. He didn't try to push me into more bike than I needed. Also, after about 7 months of riding the bike, I had a very minor issue with the battery, and Kevin was amazing in helping me get this repaired under warranty. The old gentleman at the shop was rude and argumentative. We didn't have a mask to be fair, but he was incredible condescending, and stated that "we don't rent out bikes during a pandemic". He has every right to refuse as a business but you don't need to be a jerk and impose your false beliefs. He wasn't even wearing the mask properly and it was not an n95. Even if it was an n95, I highly doubt that he was properly fitted for it, thus making useless. read more

I don't understand how people have positive feedbacks about this shop and it's owner in particular to be honest. Last year we bought a bike for my husband as a birthday gift. First of all the guy at the counter (Kevin-who we learned later on that is the owner), greets you as if you're bothering him. We somehow made the mistake of buying an ebike and we were his best friends from the moment we said "we'll buy", until we left the shop with our new ebike. When you need service, you can actually never reach the shop. Once you reach, you're again greeted as if you're bothering them. The service is terrible and you're getting charged extra for everything. We've been charged $60 for a new inner tube, where the actual cost is probably $5! They even charging for broken parts which should be under warranty as well and once we refused to pay the amount he requested, he declined to repair the bike or supply the parts which are under warranty terms! We had a controller problem and had to contact Bionx ourselves and they've pointed us to another retailer for fixing the issue. If I'm gonna be charged extra and not get a service for the product that I buy, I'd rather buy it online. At least I wouldn't be treated as bad as I did here. Now when we have a problem we either go to Laguna Beach Cyclery, or Ebikezzz at Dana Point. Couple of weeks ago we actually saw Kevin on the road using an electric scooter. As far as I'm concerned, you're the product that you sell. And if the guy doesn't use an ebike himself in his daily commute, that should tell something about him! read more

Started looking into electric boards (OneWheel) recently and went down the list of dealers. After reading a couple of by appointment-only signs after driving to them, I decided to lookup websites before anymore visits. I found the Electric Cyclery website, and drove to them in Laguna, very close to Newport. Kevin was working and welcomed me in, asked about my needs. Very shortly after he handed me a helmet and walked me to an empty lot next door, and put me on a demo board. After some instruction and his shoulder to start from, I was quickly on my own in the parking lot. Ordered a rack for my bike online and it was the worst process I've been a part of with online ordering. First, the racks took over two weeks to mail from Laguna to LA. Then, all the parts to fasten weren't in there. When I called, guy was like "ohhh dude... totally forgot to put them in there." Then asked if I could buy them on my own (really?). When I told him no, he said he would send them out, another week plus and he sent only half the parts. Gave up after that. read more

OMG the owner Kevin is extremely rude! Our suggestion is do not go there! When we were in the market to purchase the Aventon bike we were impressed with the product but he was out of stock so I had to purchase from another shop completely out of the area. When it came time to buy a rack and basket my husband went in to purchase it and Kevin behaved as if he was bothering him. No one else was in the store. For convenience only, my husband purchased the set up that Kevin recommended would fit my size and style of bike. Then when my husband brought it home to put on my bike, the darn thing would not fit. So my husband went back the next day returned the product and Kevin had the gall to say why did you buy that one. My husband calmly said because you recommended that size for the bike! He reluctantly gave him the refund and my husband left. He could also overhear Kevin talking rudely to other customers that stopped by. I don't understand this guy and all the other positive reviews. What a great experience. Kevin matched us up to bikes based on our needs. He mapped out routes, and turned us loose with fresh helmet liners, locks and panniers. We had a blast. We returned about an hour early before our four hour rental ended, and we tried some other bikes in the shop. We are considering upgrading existing bikes versus buying dedicated Ebikes. The Elby bikes Kevin has in stock are great. They have been the most stable but high performing Ebikes My wife and I have tried. While we were chatting, a man rushed in asking if we had seen his wife who wandered off 10 minutes prior who has dementia. Kevin ran out the door and he and I jumped on bikes to help search for the missing woman. My wife's mom passed from dementia, so we are familiar with how dangerous it can become when they wander away. This woman could walk into traffic and be injured or killed at any moment. Within minutes, the lady was found and safely escorted to her husband. I was so impressed that Kevin dropped everything and left his shop to help. He also gave water to some young men who stopped by asking to purchase drinks. . read more

After the key to my BionX system snapped in half, I looked for a place from which I could order a replacement. The first one I found was Electric Cyclery, so I placed an order with them. I was promised delivery within two weeks of ordering; nearly four months later I still have not received the key. I understand that there are occasionally delays in processing an order, but the owners of Electric Cyclery (whoever they are) have chosen to ignore me completely. I get no response by email, and no answer when I phone them. Since I live in Washington State, it isn't possible to stop by the store to check in on my order status. I don't know how these people are about in-person customer service, but if you are looking to order something from them and you do not live in the Laguna Beach area, I strongly recommend going with another vendor. read more

I saddens me that I have to downgrade the Electric Cyclery's rating. Ever since I purchase my electric bike here. I never receive the type of customer service care from Kevin anymore. During my research phase, I wanted to purchase my electric bike from a store locally and establish relationship with them. During my initial few phone calls, Kevin was a bit slow on returning my calls but I never expect just a disappearing act from Kevin. Once I gave Kevin my credit card to make my purchase, everything started to go down hill from here. It all started when I placed an order for an extra battery charger so I can extend my riding distance. It has been more than 9 months and still no call back from the store about the status of my special order. The only time I get any type of status is when I have to initiate the call myself. I also understand that being an early adopter on new technology will also bare limited supplies but 9 months from a major manufacture from Sanyo? I am not buying the blame game from the store's sorry excuse. Had I known this is going to be the type of service I would expect. I would be more than happy to take my money to another bike store to purchase my bike with caring and sincere customer service. Seems like I am not the only customer with this sorry ass service from Kevin. Yelper Laurent R. also has problem with Kevin as well. If his tone and voice were pleasant I would not be writing this review. He was one of the worst people who owns their own businesses that I have ever worked with. Here's the deal. I'm really upset because a good friend of mine bought an awesome yet over-priced electric bike here because of the professional service he expected from Kevin. He could have saved 400 bucks and just bought it on-line but he really liked Kevin, wanted to establish a relationship with an actually shop and wanted to support local business. Now my friend's bike was stolen and called Kevin to ask him for a copy of the serial number for the police report. First of all Kevin is difficult to reach, but when he did finally reach Kevin he said, "No problem it's on file... I'll email it to you in few minutes." Hours went by and no email and Kevin wouldn't answer the phone. Finally at the end of the day Kevin picks-up the phone and says, "Sorry I spaced....But no problem I'll sent it now." He sends over basically a blank receipt with no serial number. My friend has to call and call until Kevin decides to pick-up again and says, "Oh you want the serial number...Yeah sorry buddy we don't keep those file." I'm gonna save $400 bucks and buy my awesome electric bike online where they have proper records. read more

I had an interaction with him that left me shaking, I was so furious - he is the biggest retail jerk I've ever had the misfortune to interact with. I ordered some bike parts to give my son for Christmas, and was promised on the website that shipping would take "3-5 days." Shipping is now taking 9 days and will not be here on time for Christmas. I explained to Kevin that these are my son's main gifts, and asked politely if there was anything that could be done. He immediately became belligerent and escalated to yelling at me. This is indeed a "hole in the wall" bike shop! The owner, Kevin, reminds me of an old fashioned village blacksmith whose been there for decades. Very friendly and knowledgeable. I've been having problems with my BionX system for the past 2 years, and through a recommendation from Bent-Up-Cycles in N. Hollywood (great outfit!!!), I went down to Electric Cyclery to see if my trike could be fixed. Believe me, they would NOT have recommended Kevin if he was a total zero. You don't steer valued customers to jerks. Bad for anyone's business!!! Kevin went through his procedures, screwed in a missing bolt on my trike, checked the wiring, and did a computer diagnostic. Then I took it for a spin, and BINGO! Everything worked! The repair bill was very reasonable and I gave him a big tip because I was deliriously happy!!! I'm very puzzled that he is mostly rated 5 or 1 star! It doesn't make sense. Since he sells high end electric bikes, he depends upon word-of-mouth advertising and return customers to stay in business. If he is as bad as some people say, he would NOT be in business today! I won't do business with rude people. Customer relations is a 2-way street. And I use YELP all the time. Electric bikes are not cheap. If you want a "Made in China" quality bike, go to Wal-Mart. If you want a high quality electric bike, visit this establishment. read more

Didn't actually go there for an electric bike.. but I did stop in since I was riding through town and my mountain bike broke. They fixed my bike at a reasonable cost and had plenty of neat accessories to check out while I waited. Ended up getting a rad helmet and some tubes too. read more
