The house was in fairly good shape and when we needed something taken care of they were pretty quick about it. The steps leading up to the front door could use some attention. Felt rickety. House could have been a little cleaner. Windows and bugs.....the carpet we had to have someone come remove because the slip mat under it was rotting or something....stinky. Would use their service again though. All in all a good experience. read more

A BED BUG infestation forced our family of 15 to move homes without assistance from Elan. Groceries, luggage, beach and pool toys are just a few of the items that needed relocating. It was a lost vacation day, and took nine adults 14 hours+ to finally complete the process. Clothes, bedding and bags had to be professionally and chemically sprayed, in addition to having to do 20 loads of clothes being run through the dryer. In an attempt to resolve this inconvenience, Elan has hung up on us on more than one occasion, as well as locked their doors on us when we attempted to speak with them in person. read more

Had one of the best vacations ever in Nags Head. Great views and just a fabulous time. Unlike other reviewers I think Elan did a great job. When we had an issue they were very responsive. The house was a dream and the ocean magical. read more

We just returned from our fist ever Outer Banks vacation. We loved everything about the trip - except for the house. We stayed in 'The Whalecome Inn,' a 7 BR house with a pool in Corolla. When we arrived late afternoon Saturday, the carpets were all soaking wet and there was a damp/musty smell all throughout the house. Within 5 minutes of walking in the door, my 3 year old fell down the stairs because they were so slippery. My brother-in-law also slipped down the stairs later that night. The trash was not taken out before we arrived Sat. like it should have been and there were 2 trash bins, plus 2 recycling bins all spilling over with trash. It already reeked and got worse every day until it was finally picked up on Wednesday. After that the smell lingered throughout the rest of our stay. When we arrived, we also noticed that a kitchen window was shattered, blinds were broken, 8 of the 10 plastic Adirondack chairs were broken and unusable, screens were pushed out of the screened-in porch so we were bitten by mosquitos while trying to relax out there, and cigarette butts littered the driveway and front steps. When we tried to play pool in the game room, the room was too small and there was too much furniture in the way, that we had to rearrange the room constantly to finish the game. The swimming pool had tons of sand in it and it looked like the water was really low (it didn't even reach the top step into the pool). When we called Elan to tell them about the condition of the house, they offered no explanation or apologies. But when we arrived home from the beach later that day they had dropped off new chairs, along with a new coffee pot (there were already 2 on the counter) and some new pots and pans, which we then had to wash and put away and were also unnecessary. It seemed like it was some kind of consolation for the condition of the house, but did nothing to solve the problem - although the new chairs were definitely welcome. When I called to ask what to do about the trash problem, the woman I spoke to put me on hold 3 times within my attempt at explaining our predicament and then offered a solution without even listening to what the problem was. I had to explain it all over again. Another reviewer mentioned a wonderful gift basket and all we got was a reusable bag with 2 things of dishwasher detergent, a roll of paper towels and a few rolls of toilet paper. I'm usually not one to give a negative review, but I was so disappointed in the house and Elan that I feel the need to warn people about what they may be getting themselves into. We will DEFINITELY be returning to the Outer Banks but will DEFINITELY NOT use Elan again. read more

Rent from another company!! We are staying at an oceanfront house managed by Elan. We checked in on Sunday and tried to use the dryer after my son got sick while traveling. The next morning my father tried to use the oven to make breakfast and the front of the oven fell off. I called the rental office upset that there are two major appliances broken but they were rude and dismissive telling me that "they never had issues with the property before" and they cannot get a maintenance person to the house until Tuesday which I was told by the rental office "was good considering it was a small town". This is unacceptable. I thought I was getting a house with the same amenities that I have at home but instead ended up having to go to the laundry mat and using the grill as an oven. Perhaps I shouldn't be upset and should have just used the clothes line and laundry pins to dry the clothes as suggested by the rental office but I expect a higher level of service and responsiveness considering the amount of money spent for the week rental. Needless to say we will not be renting from Elan again. I suggest that you do the same. read more

We stayed at the House on the Hill in July 2017. There were about 16 adults and 3 toddlers. We had a great time but struggled with the rental company. Upon check in the house was not that clean with cobwebs and dead bugs. We did notify the office and received no resolution. The next day we had to contact the office as we noticed a set of sheets had a blood stain and needed a replacement. Our phone call was not returned till two days later as the housing supervisor was off and the message was not passed along. She apologized and had someone come pick up the sheets. They shared with us that the sheets would be tested for anything infectious or contagious and we would be notified. They also said they would be terminating the cleaning contract. We then followed up with the office stating that customer service wise we were disappointed. That day we also found a piece of metal, nails and staples in the backyard by the volleyball net. Elan wasn't sure who was responsible for cleaning the backyard and that was all they said. Since we had three toddlers this was a major concern. Finally they told us they would follow up with on Monday the latest. After check out, one of our guests left a wallet and immediately called. The house cleaning staff found the wallet and we had to pay for it to be overnighted. A bunch of guests paid that person cash for the trip and over $200 was missing from the wallet. Elan still never followed up that week. To end things, we asked elan for the rental contract and they will not provide it. They stated that since they know we would like to file a police report about the wallet they can no longer work with us. HORRIBLE SERVICE read more

The week of July 30 through August 6 our family rented Whalehead Summit at 988 Corolla Drive, Corolla, NC 27927 from Elan Vacations. From the moment we walked in, there were issues. Upon arrival, there was a leak in the ceiling of one of the downstairs bedrooms, due to any issue with the air conditioning. (Apparently, this was a recurring issue based on another review on this website.) I called Elan immediately and they had placed a call to the A/C repair company who would be out that evening to repair it. I was told that the cleaning inspector has seen the issue, but was befuddled as to why they didn't put a pan under the drip from the ceiling. The floor was covered in water when we arrived and I had to clean up the mess! I called the after hour's number a few hours later asking when the a/c man would arrive and they were clueless as to my situation or the repairman request. They told me that it was too late and that the repairman would be there the next day. I got to listen to water dripping into a pan all night long. I was also not sure why the cleaning inspector would have missed the following: dead bugs in a bed (obviously the bed had not been changed), sand covering two of the beds (again indicating the sheets had not been changed), ceiling lights out in two rooms, ceiling fan not working, two clogged bathtubs, a bathroom exhaust fan not working, and a coffee container full of coffee (who knows how many weeks old) on the kitchen counter. Most of these items were reported to Elan and they made the repairs the following day; however, after calling them three days in a row with issues, I gave up and left them with a long list of items that needed repair in the house, including the ripped screen door on the back porch. The several times that I spoke with Elan, I asked for a night's refund each time (approx. $600 total) and was told that it was not possible because they had made all of the repairs. Of course, the office manager never returned my call either. I have rented many homes up and down the east coast and have NEVER had to deal with so many issues in a home or the rudeness and disrespect of a rental agency like this. The website showed that there were two sets of washer and dryers (which there were not) and that there was a beach cart (which there was not). I should also mention that this house was for sale and my guess would be that the homeowners had pretty much given up on maintaining the property (or didn't care at that point). The house actually sold the week we were there and I was able to speak with the new owners regarding my dissatisfaction with Elan Vacations and their unwillingness to compensate us for any of the hassle we were put through. They were aware of previous unsatisfactory reviews of Elan Vacations. I will never rent from Elan Vacations again. read more

Our Family stayed in Skipper Fantasy 9-23-2017-9-30-2017 and when we arrived we noticed the pool was not cleaned and the bottom was sand covered. by Tuesday we had three of our family members broken out in a red rash all over there body from head to toe. After needing to see a doctor because it was still spreading. We found out that they all have hot tub folliculitis which is a bacterial infection. when we called to tell Elan Vacations they sent out a pool and spa company and after he emptied and clean the hot tub and he cleaned the pool he told us that he is not the normal pool guy for this property but that hot hut has not been cleaned for quite a few mounts and was extremely dirty. When we called and complained to elan vacations they would not except responsibility for it and said they would ask the pool guy but it had to have been cleaned. they said they would call us back and tell us what he said..... we have never heard back.We will never rent anything from them again. read more

Agree with VA C. Very rude customer service!!! I was on hold for several times for no reason as well. Very patronizing & was no help whatsoever, and most of all, very rude to talk to. I told her the website didn't have the correct price, and she kept saying "are you on the right website?", when I obviously called her # from their website (seriously, do they have multiple websites?) She could not provide answers to any questions about the place I was interested. After I was put on such a long hold, and finally was fed up with rudeness, I said, "I'm not sure that I want to rent with you guys anymore, since your customer service is not very good", she said "That's fine". Well, no loss from me, there are other places I can rent from, I will never rent from them & will tell all my friends to stay away!! Really, I can't see how they will respond if I ever have any problems with the rental place. EEEk! read more

We love the Outer Banks. We try to go every year. Unfortunately, we rented a home from ELAN Vacations and it was a nightmare. Needless to say we will never use them again or recommend them to anyone!!! When we arrived the home was overgrown and unkept. The furniture around the pool was so filthy that I wouldn't even put a beach towel on it to sit on it. The grill hadn't been cleaned in years. Trash cans overflowing. The Adirondack chairs on the deck were falling apart and not safe to sit in. The inside smelled stagnant and dirty. On the upper kitchen level it was also filthy and the wooden windows were covered in black mold. (Kids in our group have mold allergies) We called ELAN who gave us a run around, hung up on us and was rather unprofessional and rude. A housekeeper stopped by and commented that the inspector hadn't been through yet but that she could spray the windows with bleach to kill the mold. She never addressed the dirty house or offer to clean it. I could continue to list everything wrong but it would never end. Needless to say we called ELAN and requested another rental or some kind of option. The CEO of ELAN offered no options and said "it is what it is". Whatever that means. He said that all of our issues were indicative of a beach house. I disagree because we have had wonderful luck with previous OBX rental companies which were clean. Due to the allergy issue, we had to go to another rental company and rent another home. ( Not what you want to do the first day of a much awaited vacation) So we paid for two vacation rentals and only stayed in one. Very frustrating and not in our budget. Unfortunately, families don't have any recourse if they are dissatisfied with the accommodations that they had to pay for before they arrive. Wish I would have checked out Yelp before I chose ELAN. Steer clear of this unprofessional company!!! read more
