Cannot recommend Wes Hagen and his hospitality at the Ranchos De Ontiveros facility enough. 5+…read morestars! Wes' incredible amount of knowledge, and painstaking explanations (without being boring) of the entire growth, processing, and history of the winemaking and vinting process was nothing short of a wonderful journey into the heart of California winemaking. Like I told Wes when we set out on our tour, I'm no oenophile. I simply know what I like when I taste it. Wes was patient, inquisitive, and not high minded about wine and how and when it can be enjoyed. I really appreciated the thoughtfulness and thoroughness with which he constructed the tasting, and the accompanying culinary pairings. For those considering the tour, the Ranchos De Ontiveros grounds are a little further out there, but you'll be rewarded with the majesty of the Santa Maria valley and the bucolic surrounds which envelop the landscape. Between the setting and the awesome educational experience through Wes, you will undoubtedly feel privileged to have spend a wonderful couple hours in his and the vinyards company.

These guys went above and beyond to show us a good time and were incredibly kind and generous. The wine was spectacular. Most guests bought bottles at the end. And every single person was thrilled with their experience. They way way way exceeded our expectations - which I'm not saying lightly. The venue was stunning, and we couldn't be more grateful to have had such spectacular hosts.

This was our first visit to this rustic tasting room, and we had a nice experience. It was a Friday, right after opening, and we had the whole place to ourselves. The service was friendly, and my wife and I shared a traditional and custom flight. We thought that the wines were decent, some better suited to our palates than others, but well-made, nonetheless. We were fortunate to meet and speak with the owner who happened to be bringing in supplies and got a little more detail on the wines, than we did from our "winerista". He also mentioned that his niece opened a winery in Los Olivos (Story of Soil), which focused on wine styles a little out of our wheelhouse, but we thought we'd give that a try as well, and it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. Costa De Oro is a nice place with wine varietals for everyone's tastes. I recommend you stop in and give them a try when you're passing through the area.

We arrived right as they opened, and we built our own tasting flights and she gave us information about the property and the wines. She was also kind enough to share info about other wineries in the area as well. We had a great experience just pulling over during our drive home, would absolutely recommend!! Thank you for the great experience Tammy!

It's located at the easterly end of town, rather than in the center of town where most of the other wineries are located. Kevin Law, owner/winemaker, is making some of the best wines anywhere in the area. I say this with my usual disclaimer that what my palate loves, yours may not, so check them out for yourselves. Will, the assistant winemaker, happened to be pouring during our recent visit. He's a wonderful host and always takes care of us. We tasted the following: '19 Blanc de Blancs Sparkling (100% Chardonnay), '24 Aligoté (Santa Barbara), '19 Chardonnay (La Rinconada), '22 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills), '21 Pinot Noir (Sanford & Benedict), and a '19 "Derive" Bordeaux blend (48% Napa & 52% Santa Ynez Valley). As usual, we loved everything! I honestly can't tell you what they charge for a tasting, as we've always purchased 6 or more bottles, and they've waived the fee. Now we're Club Members and receive a regular discount all year, with an additional discount the two months they release to club members. I can't recommend these guys enough, as we feel that their wines are some of the best in the area.

The wines themselves are excellent and easily compete with Santa Maria's other offerings. I tried all of the wines on their tasting flight, and it's nice to see that the college grows so many different varietals. Some of my favorites were the Albariño (bonus points for growing this varietal on site), Chardonnay, 2015 Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Malbec (the only non-estate offering). I ended up taking a bottle of the pinot home. The service is great! We had a first-year student helping us who was very knowledgeable about the wines and the enology and viticulture program at AHC. For reference, this was on August 17 around 3 pm, so whoever that was, major props to you! The current schedule for the Fall 2018 semester is Friday, 2-6, so make sure to stop by if you're in Santa Maria!

The school hosts tastings on Thursdays between 11am and 5pm in Room 211 of Building O on their Santa Maria campus. As a small-production winery, the students give the wine a lot of attention from grape to glass. The attention shows in the wine with some of them being astonishingly good and hard to believe they are the work of students. Part of the magic is that the students work under the guidance of long-time winemaker Chris Brown, grow grapes under the guidance of one of Paso Robles' most well-known growers, Ric Fuller, and enjoy the benefits of a program administered by the ever resourceful Alfredo Koch with connections throughout the industry and with UC Davis. The strong academic team and the enthusiasm of the students make for a great blend. (I couldn't resist the pun!) But seriously, the wine here is good and because the winery is just getting its start, the wines are currently all under $20, a great bargain considering some of the grapes are sourced from the donations of prestigious terroirs spanning the Central Coast. Plus, you'll be supporting students on their path to careers in viticulture and wine making!
