The green salsa on the side is not for the faint at heart, but adds a wonderful spice to an already 5-star burrito. The word on the street is that this restaurant has some of the best Mexican food in the state. The menu definitely points that out with weekend options of barbacoa de chivo (mini ), pozole, and menudo. I had the barbacoa de res and it was rich with very tender beef cooked for hours in a family recipe broth. Tortillas come from a local Minneapolis tortilleria and are good. I've debated writing this review because El Triunfo is a family-owned establishment, but our experience was disturbing enough that I feel compelled to counter some of these positive reviews. El Triunfo is dirty and poorly maintained. The tables look like they've never been wiped off. If the food and service were good, that might be tolerable, but nothing about this place is good. We waited 30+ minutes for our food (an enchilada and a quesadilla) and they forgot our appetizer. When the food finally arrived, it was cold and confusing. The quesadilla was clearly microwaved -- the tortilla was still white -- and it was just a tortilla with partially melted cheese, nothing on the side. The enchilada was even worse. When you hear enchilada, you probably envision some sort of tortilla filled with meat, sauce, and cheese, right? Well, what we got were some cold, chewy chunks of pork -- no tortilla, no sauce, no cheese. We tried to give our meals a chance, but the food was inedible. My boyfriend was disgusted by his chewy, reheated pork chunks and I was disgusted that I paid almost ten dollars for a microwaved tortilla and some shredded cheese. We decided to ask for a refund and eat elsewhere. Well, the young woman at the register insisted that she didn't know how to give a refund (a lie). She said that because we'd taken a couple bites to try our food, they couldn't give our money back. Um, how would we figure out the food was bad if we didn't try it? The whole dang family argued with my boyfriend for a VERY long time and only half-agreed to refund our money when I said I'd be writing a Yelp review. How is this a business? How do they get away with serving bad food and treating their customers like garbage? We exited the restaurant and got in our car. As we were driving away, the male owner ran out of the restaurant and started yelling at us about the fact that we'd taken a few sips of our sodas while waiting for the food we requested a refund for. He accused us of stealing, even though we'd paid for everything upfront and weren't even convinced we were getting a refund for our uneaten meals. The man's daughter ran out behind him, rushed up to our window, and begged me not to write a bad review. Ummm. What? We drove away disgusted and ended up eating at Taco Bell that night, where both the food and the service were miraculously superior to El Triunfo's. Watch out for this place! I have no idea why their reviews are so positive. Maybe being from big cities means our standards for Mexican food are higher? I'm really not sure. This family is beyond unprofessional and their immediate display of aggression was alarming, to say the least. We're new to the area and our experience here put a terrible taste in our mouths. Pun intended. Find somewhere less toxic to eat.... like the local Taco Bell, sadly. read more

Without a doubt, the best eating to be had in Northfield. On my semi-annual trips to visit Northfield, I make much more of an effort to find time for El Triunfo than I do for my dad, or my cousins, or really anything. If El Triunfo had longer hours, and served its barbacoa all-the-week-around, I'd be pre- (honestly, maybe post-) diabetic. If it served mezcal -- and thank god, it doesn't -- I'd have died in a ditch, long ago. You don't go to El Triunfo for the tablecloths and flatware. You don't go for the sommelier. You go for the best, most authentic taqueria experience between the Mississippi and Colorado. And certainly the best in Minnesota (a massive state massively bereft of legit Mexican). I stopped going here a LONG time ago! The food was ok I guess, but the place was so dirty anytime I went in. I had to wait forever to get service or attention. Not much for seating and no one came out to clean off tables so had to move trash and sit at a dirty table. It was the only place I could find my favorite hot sauce. After looking through the grocery section and finding foods up to and over 3 years expired, plus dust so THICK on the products.... think about the rest of the atmosphere of the place. This was my first time at El Triunfo but definitely not my last. I got a beef burrito and it was the size of a newborn baby. The beef was perfect and complemented well by the salsa verde--which is very hot. I love spicy food and it made my nose run, but I could stop adding it to my burrito it's that good. I am writing this review not just because El Triunfo is our favourite restaurant in Northfield and because their food is delicious but also to counter the bizarre negative review by Leif G, which was also left on TripAdvisor under a different name. In years and years of eating at El Triunfo I have never encountered anything like what is described in that review and the family that runs it is not capable of the behaviour described. I have no idea what went down on that visit but it is deplorable that someone would run down a small family-owned business to settle some random grudge. If you're passing by El Triunfo please stop in for a meal. It's delicious Mexican food of a kind you wouldn't expect to find in rural Minnesota. I was excited to come here based on the good reviews, but leaving quite disappointed. They used this red sauce on ALL the plates we got which did not taste good. It was runny, VERY messy. I just wanted my good ol chicken quesadilla but did not get that, instead it was all mushy with that red sauce. The tacos are safer to get if u dont want to get dirty, we had the (fried) pork ones. Authentic, fresh Mexican food for rock bottom prices? Yes, you may have to go into a small, questionable market to get it but the food is soooo worth it. Their chicken burrito is literally bigger than my face and is so full of meat, beans, rice and other fresh ingredients that I have craved nothing else since I last ate it. My husband likes their tacos al pastor and carne asada tacos and has said that they're the best he has tried in the area. It had a little more rice than I like - would have preferred some beans - but the chorizo was good. Side salad wasn't anything to write about. The green sauce, however, as others have mentioned, is addictive. Creamy and a little spicy. I have it only one other place near home. My daughter had tacos (asada and al pastor). This place is so so so amazing. Located in a small Mexican grocery store and run by a really friendly family. But the main thing is the food. I am from Austin, TX originally, where there are literally over 400 Mexican restaurants, and I have grown up on the stuff and found the best of the best. As others have said, it's not a place you go for the aesthetics. But the food is awesome, fast, and very affordable. The chorizo burrito is my favorite-- full of flavor and a massive portion for $7.51 with tax, I feel like I'm stealing. I've also tried the guacamole, which isn't on the menu but was recommended to me by a couple of friends, and it is equally amazing. The one downside to that is that it comes in a larger "side" helping, with chips, so it's best if you're going to take some home or share it among 3-4 people. They're very fast, and you can eat in, or take it to go. As far as drinks/sides go, they've got a variety of mexican sodas, and also have a few groceries for sale. A final note, as others have warned, the green salsa is pretty spicy, so those with a sensitive palate could be in for a heat check. My one regret is that I didn't find it until my last year. read more
