This used to be a La Baguette and had been many other restaurants since then. I've driven by a few times and always seem to forget to come back and El Toro..until today. It's very cute inside. They kept the exposed brick and arches. I was a little worried that it wouldn't be authentic since my waitress was white (no shade, I'm also white) but the place was busy at 2:30 in the afternoon and the crowd was diverse. I ordered street tacos which are $1.75 each during Happy Hour (M-F 3-5pm) and on Taco Tuesday. They also have a lunch special with 3 street tacos and rice and beans for $8.99 so the prices are more than reasonable. The tacos were good and it wasn't the typical Tex Mex that you see around here. Normally I tip 20% when going out to eat with my 5 kids and wife. No because we are too much to handle but I always appreciate decent service. Today I ate at El Toro, which was my favorite Mexican place in Norman, they brought the wrong order for one of my kids, service was exceptionally slow on a Sunday with two other groups in the place and service was, okay. Nothing special. None of this was a big deal but then I was hit with a 20% gratuity for having a party with six people four of them under 10. I don't know, I have never been hit with a 20% tip before automatically, and on top of the so so service and wrong order it's just not sitting with me right. Won't be back. This was our first time here. Up front, we really hate Tex-Mex and this p mg ace is definitely not that. Coming from California, my wife and i are really pretty picky on our Mexican food and it is really hard to come by. El Toros is definitely authentic. We were really impressed with the inside ambience and our waitress treated us like family. But now for the best, which is the food. They had a nice menu with reasonable prices. I had my favorite, the huevos rancheros and my wife had the 2 beef enchilada combined both were delicious. El Toro is a restaurant you definitely need to try in Norman! The inside is so cutie and great for pictures. Our server was super sweet and recommended the watermelon Agua Fresca and it was very very good. It was super fresh and light perfect for a summer day. The chips and salsa were super delicious as well. I ordered the tacos while my boyfriend ordered the burrito version. Food took a while to come out, but when it did, it was honestly so worth it. If you love birria - this is the place for you. I tried El Toro tonight and found it to be very interesting. The menu is dominated by different dishes featuring Birria. What you won't find are the same old basic tacos, enchiladas, rice, and beans that all the other Okie-Mex joints in town have. Since they just opened - no margaritas are available yet. Will update once they have them. The chips were some of the best I have found in Norman - they were fairly light and thin and appeared to be made in house. Not the thick yellow ones everyone else seems to serve. The salsa served with the chips was relatively thin and only had a slight kick to it. However - ask for the jalapeno based green salsa - it delivers the heat, just the way I like it. I ordered the elotes for a starter. I prefer when they swap the mayonnaise for sour cream, but everything else about the elotes was very good. Very similar to what you would find if you went to a street vendor in Dallas. For the main I ordered the Torta Birria which is basically a Birria sandwich. The buns were very soft and flavorful. The birria meat was also very good. They served it with a small bowl of what looked like mexican au jus, which was very good for dipping into. I didn't try any of the aqua fresca's that they had but they looked very good. I will get one next time. I recommend El Toro for those that love Birria or anyone who is looking to try something different than the same old Okie Mex. read more

Came here about 2 weeks ago and without it even being busy, it took over 30 minutes for our drink order to be taken, an hour for soda to come out, and over 2 hours for our food to come out. All i ordered was an appetizer elotes and it didn't come out until after everything else was already given to the table. Staff attempted to say they were busy, however there was about 2-3 other tables in the entire place and they received service with no issue and received their food in a timely manner. The food was excellent at El Toro Mexican Grill! The service was great! The vibe was on point. I've been wanting to try this for a few months and made it in today. We started with the pineapple Fresca to drink and then couldn't get enough of their homemade salsa. I had never had pupusas but my boyfriend insisted and says they are some of the best he has ever had. Their flauta shots were next. The amount could have been an appetizer and the delicious sauce in the glass was devoured with the remaining chips. Next we had the Molcajete. The grilled cactus, cheese, chicken, steak, and shrimp was more than we could eat but definitely came home to eat later.
