I'm thrilled (and relieved) to say that Midnite Patisserie ticks off all the boxes I look for: lots of flaky layers, buttery bites, sweet *and* savory options, and creative, gorgeous flavors. Midnite's menu rotates weekly, and in order to get your hands on them, you have to plan ahead via preordering. Check the instagram page or website on Wednesdays, take your pick (there is an option to order a sampler box at a discounted rate), and pick them up from the "secret kitchen" on Saturdays from 10 AM-1 PM. I promise you: it's 1000% worth it.

I've been craving patisserie so bad lately. Picked up a blueberry hazelnut danish and cinnamon…read moreswirl financier. The lamination on the danish is outstanding! It also has a glaze which gives it extra crunch and a sweet flavor. The hazelnut frangipan didn't have much hazelnut flavor but the texture was heavenly. Topped with vanilla bean chantilly, it was not overly sweet or rich. Financiers have become my new favorite dessert! Last time at Midnite I tried their mocha financier and fell in love. This cinnamon swirl financier was even better! It had all the flavor a cinnamon roll and the perfect texture of classic financier. If you've never tried one, you really need to!

I found Gabys by accident, best find. Thank goodness I live 2 hours away or I would weigh a lot…read moremore. When I go to The Market Place Gaby's is the first place I head and the first thing I look for are the canneles, rarely do they make it the two hour trip back without a couple missing. Gaby himself is very willing to answer questions and his love for the French pastry shows. All of the employees I have interacted with are well versed on the ingredients and as I'm losing control keep me focused and steer me clear of anything with hazelnuts, highly allergic. I also have to get the Breton cookies which are buttery and delicious. The creams used in the pastry's is something you want to let melt on your tongue, after all French pastry's so lots of cream. I'm working my way through all of the pastries and nothing has disappointed it truly is a joy.

Baby's Gourmandise is located inside Grand Rapids Downtown Market, and it has some of the prettiest desserts in the whole joint. There were lots of pastries, but it looks like maybe cream puffs are the stars here. There were a few different flavors of cream puffs, including chocolate and even matcha. I'm not the biggest fan of choux pastries, though, so I didn't pick a cream puff. Instead, I got a pistachio creme brûlée! I love that first tap to break the hard, sugary crust. Underneath is smooth and creamy pistachio custard, just the slightest shade of light green. It was decadent but not too much! If I lived in Grand Rapids, Gaby's would be getting visits from me frequently. But as it is, I'm glad I discovered this little gem in the market.
