I made the mistake of ordering El Salto catering for a lunch gathering for 25 people. I chose the highest tier catering package for $16 a person and ordered Chicken fajitas, carnitas, and tamales. The order was supposed to be ready at 11:40 AM and it wasn't ready until closer to 12 PM. When we unpackaged the contents, we realized that there were no tortillas included in the order. There was a small tray of Mexican rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese, carnitas and the chicken fajitas. The chips came in a large ziplock bag with 1 quart of salsa. Order came with serving spoons, but did not include 25 plates OR 25 napkins and we were short. When I called the restaurant to inquire about the missing tortillas, I was transferred to a manager who did not believe us that we were shorted the tortillas. She put us on a brief hold and returned to the line to state that the staff packaging the order is "90% certain" they included the tortillas in one of the aluminum trays. She asked us a few times to check the cardboard box. We informed her multiple times that the box is empty and that there are no tortillas in this order. It is very hard to enjoy a fajita bar without tortillas. She then decided to inform us that if we wanted, we can come back to the restaurant to pick up "MORE" Tortillas. I explained again that we do not have ANY tortillas and picking up MORE tortillas at this point in the lunch was not worth it since the order was already late and people had already started eating. The part that bothered me the most is that there was no acknowledgement or apology for the missing item in the order and an unbelieving attitude as if I was lying. I told her that there is no reason for me to lie and say I am missing tortillas. There's no value in me trying to secretly get extra tortillas if there are not even enough proteins to supplement those tortillas. All in all, we paid $500 for this catering order and the amount of food that we received felt like closer to a $200 order. The trays for the rice, beans, and proteins were mini trays and I found it very hard to believe that they expected that to feed 25 people. Additionally 1 quart of salsa is NOT enough for such a large number of people. And if I'm paying for a catering order that is supposed to be 25 people why wouldn't you double check there's enough plates and napkins??? As for the taste of food, my colleagues remarked that the food lacked flavor and tasted very bland. The tamales were very stringy inside and not able to cut through the inside without using a knife. If we had had enough salsa, that may have helped. All in all we will NOT be ordering from El Salto ever again. If you want decent Mexican food for a large crowd, honestly QDOBA is better and cheaper. read more

I was hooked at Margarita! I came here off a recommendation of a friend. Oh boy it didn't disappoint. Waiters are plenty so you're not waiting to be greeted or seated. Very spacious not cramped. Plenty of parking as well. Prices are very fair for the portion and quality. The drinks are delicious and you get 3 different sizes. The chips are salsa are complimentary. We sat at the bar. Bartender and Margheritas were good. Hence, 2 stars. The food was AWFUL! Queso 'dip' had the consistency of water and was tasteless. It was $9. The Cheese Steak Tacos were not recognizable as tacos. I only saw 1 flour tortilla. It had sparse steak and was drenched in the watery queso sauce. At $16 it was a disappointment. An 18% gratuity was added to the bill. I get that some people do not tip but I should not be forced to help management pay their employees salaries. The irony is that I usually tip 30%. This is our go to Mexican place. The staff is friendly, food comes out fast and hot and the drinks are great. There are 3 sizes of margaritas and they have drink specials on certain nights. My faves are the queso dip-which I could just eat that and batches of chips! The fajita quesadilla and Alambre. My husband also likes the burrito El charro. Oh and the prices are great. You don't have to spend a fortune for a good meal especially since they serve enough where you have lunch the next day. The service was attentive. The food was delicious and we loved the modern yet authentic atmosphete.

A friend was visiting from out of town, and I'd heard that El Salto had patio dining, which was our preference. I was able to verify they had outside seating on Yelp, so we headed over there. We weren't handed menus since they are doing it electronically by scanning the code at your table. We'd each ended up downloading the PDFs to review easier. They have a great Vegetarian Combo option where you can pick two items for only $6.95. We soon realized the PDF did not have a drinks menu. I asked the waiter for a paper menu, and he indicated that I could view the drinks on my phone. We still weren't seeing it, so he ends up coming over and touching my phone to go back to where the Drinks menu was. It was good to have assistance, but the reason we were sitting outside in the first place was for social distancing during the pandemic, and I didn't want him physically touching my phone. Had an issue with the bill and different people came over to "assist" however, they couldn't help. They told us to wait for the manager for 1 hour because they couldn't assist us. I drive by El Salto everyday and finally decided to drop in. I am happy to report that this colorful restaurant passed with flying colors on all counts. The atmosphere in here is great. I went in right before they left in search of an evening snack and was excited they were still taking orders. I only ordered guacamole, queso and chips and they were all really good. Their menu looks great and I can't wait to go back and try the shrimp tacos. I was pleasantly surprised when I drove up to my hotel and noticed all of the new restaurants. They all seem to be open later in the evening which is great because everything in this area closes so early. The restaurant is really cute, it still has the shiny newness to it! We went there after a nearby hospital stay for a family member. We were pretty hungry. We were seated right away. The server was efficient and always keeping an eye on us for our needs. We stop by this place quite often usually on Sundays. Always sit at the bar since the bartender is the reason we keep coming back. The drinks are very good. Prices are a little higher than our normal Mexican restaurants but overall the drinks are excellent. The food is good and the menu options are decent. Not overwhelming but not small. One thing they should add is daily specials or maybe something different from time to time. Parking is rough now that a steakhouse opened in the same strip. So I feel like there are so many opinions on El Salto, people either love it or hate it! I am kind of indifferent. I never went to the old location but definitely wanted to give the new spot a try. The decor is nice and the building is great. Staff is friendly and attentive. The prices are super reasonable. On Wednesday's they have margaritas (16oz) for $2.88! We had to ask our waitress twice because we couldn't believe that was the price. They have tons of flavors. I asked if they could make me a skinny marg though and they said no. The wine list needs a ton of work. It's literally only Sutter Home, no just no. Our food came out fairly quickly and everyone thought it was pretty good. I guess I am not one of those people that loves the super cheese smothered Mexican food with rice and beans. I know this is like every Mexican place in the area but it just isn't my scene. I actually really liked their other concept, Coyote Cantina (now closed). Smaller portions, healthier fresher options. But I digress, obviously people in this area don't like that kind of Mexican food! I had the chicken ixtapa which was a grilled chicken with onions and pineapple in a slightly spicy sauce. It was good! Lots of onions, canned pineapple but otherwise good. The chips were decent...not to thick which is good but I love the super thin chips so they were ok to me. This place is a-ok! Myself and a Guest had Brunch there today. She had been before and loved their burrito and I was referred by a friend who said the drinks were off the chain. Both me and my guest ordered the Taco Salads, and it arrives at the table within 10mins. Fluid which I have surmised to be the broth from the beans, was pouring out of the bottom of both our shells. So much so, that we rolled up napkins to soak up the juice which was now rolling over the edge of our plates. We tried eating them and came to same conclusions that it was inedible. Waitress (Gabby) who I'd give 5 stars to, said at first it was water from the lettuce, until I said it was navy bean juice. She said sometimes they don't strain them before adding them to a taco salad and she was going to tell go do that going forth. That's when we both said "we can't eat this, it's too soggy, please have them remake ours for us". She obliged and when the redone Taco Bowl Salads arrived, they were not soggy. We were both satisfied enough to eat them. In my opinion, it was bland and no matter which salsa I put on it, it was still too bland for my tastebuds. I won't be returning to eat, especially after being charged $1.50 for the Salsa to put on the Taco Salads, however I wanted to return to try their Monster Margaritas that everyone raved about, but after tipping 5.00 on a $24 meal only to find out 18 gratuity had already been applied ... The food was sooooo good. It was not a lot of people and they were practicing distancing do the COVID19. The stir fry had really large shrimp and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. The burrito was really large and it was enough for two meals. The seasonings inside the burrito along with the meat chicken and steak you are wonderful. We will be going again. read more

El Salto was a suggestion to my husband and I for dinner & being fond of Mexican food we went. It was dinner time, but El Salto was not crowded. Our waitress was quick to arrive with menus & introduced herself as Maria. My first issue with El Salto is Maria addressed me (not my husband) in an irritatingly condescending tone as "hun" several times while we spoke. It was offensive & demeaning to be addressed this way by a woman who was NOT my mother, grandmother, or elderly relative. Addressing another woman or any customer as hun or dear or sweetie is offensive and completely inappropriate. I am not a child and was probably HER elder. She was clearly a Mexican immigrant, maybe she didn't know better. But her condescending tone tells me otherwise. I wonder if she was parroting some 1950s TV show waitress? Doesn't matter, terms like "hun", "dear" j "sweetie" should never be used by the service industry. After that initial contact, Maria came back SEVERAL times in short intervals to enquire whether we were ready to order. My husband and I were talking and he hadn't even looked at the menu the first time she returned. I smiled and said sorry not ready yet and her expression said she was irritated. After that she came back two more times with a few minutes in between! She was clearly in a hurry, to the point of being irritating. But It wasn't close to closing time. Perhaps Maria had plans to leave work early & our being seated at her table ruined her plans? Idk. Torn between 3 choices & Maria rushing me along compelled me to order & I decided on a burrito. In addition to a meat filling (I chose Steak) there were two also two types of burritos on El Saltos menu. I asked the very harried Maria the difference between two types of burrito to which she replied curtly, "You pick type meat." She'd hardly noted my selection and rushed away. But I stopped her asking if my selection came with beans and rice. She said no and I asked her to add them to my order. My husband and I eat a lot of Mexican food and have dozens of restaurant choices in our SW side Chicago neighborhood. I also worked for 15 years in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood. I'm mentioning these facts so all will know I know my Mexican food. It was one of the worst burritos I've ever had. There was a yellow, liquid-like substance posing as cheese and teensy bits of "meat" that was more hamburger-like than steak. There wasn't much of it in the burrito. I was hungry, but ate maybe a third and then I stopped eating. Speedy Maria never brought my beans and rice, and was suddenly incognito. Maybe she took a break? Maybe she got stuck in the bathroom? I don't know. My husband had finished his hamburger tacos when she finally reappeared with our check in hand, shoving it toward my husband. I asked Maria for my beans and rice, thinking they probably couldn't mess that up. She was not happy, but she was back pronto with watery refried beans & really dry rice. If you open a Mexican restaurant & hope for success, you'll need more than Mexican decor & Mexican staff to do so. El Salto is a roomy, flashy place with all the bells & whistles, except the food is awful. What really was the mystery meat I consumed? What was the mystery behind Maria's harried & rude service? I guess I will never know. Last, some advice for the busy waitress, Maria: please refrain from using words like dear, sweetie and hun when addressing costumers. It's offensive. I ain't your honey. Also if you're unhappy with your job or the people you must wait on, keep it out of your face & tone. We didn't leave a tip because it wasn't earned. read more

They bring warm chips and salsa to the table for free after you are seated. Server was pleasant and brought our non alcoholic drinks quickly. Ordered the side of queso dip and it was very good! We then ordered for lunch the chicken fajita taco salad and California burrito. The food came lightning fast and was hot. Food was very good. Manager came by and asked how everything was and brought us our check. She did point out that there is a 18% gratuity added to the bill, which we thought was great that she told us that. I had no idea that Mexican food can taste this horrible. This place has miles to go before it can stand out above the other burrito joints. FOOD 1/5 Greasy and tasteless. Every main dish that came out of the kitchen had super greasy meat. The dishes came out in record time even though the restaurant was busy making me believe that all of the food is cooked in bulk and then reheated with addition of oil. We came here with kids and ended up ordering nuggets with kids pizza. Nuggets and the pizza were microwaved and came out soggy. one of the pictures I included shows grease that was left on fingers from just touching the nuggets. Guacamole and salsa were good and that is the only reason food gets 1 star. SERVICE 5/5 This place has a big staff and they do take good care of the guests. This location is fairly new, it's very open, modern and clean! The staff was very attentive and anticipated our needs! The food was served quickly, very hot, huge and tasty! I highly recommend this restaurant! We had three large to go containers of leftovers ( my companion' shrimp quesadilla, was gigantic as well) Our server immediately came over and place all of the containers into a plastic bad, that was awesome, it gave us room to finish our beverages, and made it easy to carry everything!
