Have eaten at this restaurant many times and no issues. But last 2 visits the salsa and cheese sauce have both been made spicier and are to hot to enjoy. Brought this to managements attention and they seemed to ignore my complaint. Since it has been good might give it one more try. But if things not changed I'll try someplace else. read more

Great little spot! A friend recommended this place as one of the best - so I had to try it! I read the reviews and everything backed up the claim, this is a place to check out. We went on Saturday right when they were opening up. So, we were able to get the lunch specials. They are priced very reasonable and you get a lot of food for your money. The establishment was clean and COVID19 protocol was taken very seriously here. Everyone had on a mask, hand sanitizer was available for the customers, and tables were 6 feet apart or more. Once seated, you were served with fresh salsa and chips. When I say fresh, I mean made that morning kinda fresh! You could taste every element of the tomatoes, cilantro, peppers, etc. All blends well and seasoned to perfection. The waitress was very observant, she saw we were talking and was mindful not to rush us to order, we appreciated that. Very warm and friendly service. You could tell they treated everyone like family, but with regulars you could hear then chatting with them and truly appreciating each others company. The main dishes came at a very reasonable time and piping hot! I ordered the El Volcan - a grilled chicken breast dish with mushrooms, onions, cheese sauce, rice, salad, and soft tortillas. The chicken was cut thin and tender! Just the right amount of cheese sauce and veggies. The mushrooms and onions were super tender to compliment the chicken. The rice was seasoned well and soft. The salad was cold and crunchy. My only complaint, to put the salad in a separate bowl due to the difference of temperatures on the plate. It was a little annoying that my salad started to become warm in a short amount of time due to the other hot items on my plate. Otherwise, everything was good. Very good little "hole in the wall" mexican restaurant in a grocery store strip center. There is a sandwich board outside with their specials. Inside they seat you in a very cozy environment. There is lots to look at on the walls and a few pinatas hanging from the ceilings. There menu has plenty of meal combinations and the prices are really great for the portion sizes. The food was really delicious. I loved the salsa and chips that came complimentary with the meal. I thought my chicken burrito with fresh guacamole and queso cheese was really good. The chopped tomatoes and lettuce were very fresh too. The service was good and there was a bit of a mid week lunch crowd at the time that I was there. I am from out of town but would definitely bookmark this place for a return visit. read more

El Rio used to be a great place to go to, friendly staff that remembered you and great food. About a year ago things changed and I suspect there was a change in ownership. The menu now looks like the typical chain mexican restaurant with the food all tasting the same or having little to no taste at all. Lastly the friendly staff no longer stop by your table to say hello and the newest waitress works like she doesn't wish to be there after trying to get you to sit at a booth in the back that the chair is broken! It's sad to see a family run super restaurant move to the bottom of our list and we no longer will be going there. read more

Hello Yelp fam! So I just left this local mexican restaurant in Creedmor, NC. It was a little suspect when I first pulled up. When I went inside, they seemed to be a little short staff, so no one was able to greet, but eventually they did. But I was not pressed because I was hungry and the day was long. The young lady who helped me and my husband was very sweet, but this is where things got a little "should I walk out". My husband order a LONG ISLAND ICE TEA ( because it was that type of day), but instead we got a "short island ice tea". I have never seen a Long Island Ice Tea served in a shot glass. But the story ends with management refusing to refund drink, but my husband kept it cool and the manager ended up taking the drink off. All in all the food was good, but my veggies were a little chard, but never the less, the bathroom was clean, so they get my vote! Might just go again read more

Was pleasantly surprised to find authentic Mexican at this strip mall (food lion) location. They have daily specials, but prices are very reasonable. We came on a Tuesday as hubby figured tacos would be cheap, but the taco deal here is on Mondays. Oh well, when in Rome. The salsa and chips are complimentary and they would bring refills if you want. I got the quesadilla Del Mar which was filled with shrimp, onions, peppers and cheese. It's huge and comes with salad with sour cream and rice. Very filling and satisfying meal. Don't let the outside fool you, it's a great place with excellent service and delicious Mexican food. read more

In short, El Rio is a slightly above-average strip-mall Tex-Mex place. The menu is exactly what you would expect. They did have fresh-spinach enchiladas which was a pleasant surprise. They have lots of veggie options shown off in a special section of the menu. The server was friendly and efficient. El Rio is suffering from the same staffing shortages as every other restaurant in the US; they were breaking in a new cook, so three of us got served about 10 minutes before the last two. This wasn't an issue for us (old retired guys) but if you're in a hurry, the slow service may make a difference. read more

When our server put a basket of freshly cooked chips, individual bowls and a bottle of fresh salsa, I knew we chose a good place to eat. Husband and I ordered the 3 taco platter. The soft tacos came wrapped in heavy foil, fillings were moist and hot, corn tortillas soft and warm. The salsa that came with the tacos tasted of toasted chilies. Delicious! They even gave us refill sodas in to go cups for the road! If your driving south of Richmond to I85 to Raleigh-Durham, this is a good place to take a meal or a break from driving. read more

Okay, so the ambiance needs an upgrade - could use new carpet and paint. But tonight, the food was terrific. The service was better than mediocre. To celebrate the day after sinking the mayo (have you ever tried to do that?) I asked my bride to join me for dinner here. I had the Especial Dinner - a chalupa, a taco, a tamale, an enchilada and something else with guacamole, spanish rice and refried beans... My husband hates Mexican food. He said this was the best chimichanga he has ever had, and that we can order food from them again. This is an early Christmas miracle. I think he loved that it was filled with tasty, juicy carnitas. I ordered the tacos al pastor and really enjoyed the flavor of the pork and the pineapple. The service goes down, the rating goes down. My wife and I went back, and being vegan, this time we remembered to inquire about the ingredients of their rice. We went in, and were seated. We took our menus and we soon had an experience with 3 waiters that shall from here on be referred to as 1,2 and 3. First, waiter: 1, a woman whose language barrier was not an obstacle approached us and she was very courteous. We asked her if the rice had any meat based ingredients in it. She said she did not know and would check. Awesome response! But terrible execution. We soon witnessed waiter 1 go into the kitchen area but then come back out to many other tables, but not ours. Quite a while went by and we figured she had forgotten her mission with us. I understand the multitasking efforts that waiters go through so I empathize. Then, waiter: 2 approaches. There is a noticable language barrier with waiter 2. He is also the reason that women should feel uncomfortable at El Rio and is most of the reason for my first review's complaints. We ask him is there any meat based ingredients in the rice? He answered immediately and without thought. That prompted suspicion in us... It seemed that he answered the question without thinking about it or understanding it. He said, "No, no meat." He had his pad out, eager to take our order and just finish his job. We said, we'll think more about the menu as we didn't trust his response. Finally, Waiter: 3 approaches. This man is clearly bilingual but fluent. He is also our favorite waiter there, kind, courteous and friendly. We asked him, and he admitted he did not know so he turned quickly to Waiter: 2 who was behind him, and in spanish asked him our question. Ah ha, we realized that we were lied to by waiter: 2 as he answered waiter: 3 with an "I don't know" expression. In english, to us, he knew as a matter of fact there was no meat in the rice. But now, in spanish, he does not know. Soon waiter: 3 came from the kitchen with the true answer, written on paper, the exact ingredient was "Chicken Boullion." So we ordered our delicious food with no rice. And we were happy with it. I know my updated rating may be harsh, but a waiter that makes women uncomfortable and lies to customers just to make a sale ruins my mood more than anything. El Rio makes good food, but again, the service is terrible. read more

Nothing special here. The food is acceptable and reasonably priced. The portions are decent and most people will leave full and happy. Only complaint is the salsa is inedibly salty by my palate. MY friends think it's fine, but they are the kind of people that will put salt in salty store-bought salsa sometimes, so their ability to taste salt isn't really trustworthy. In any case, El Rio is a decent enough place. If you're in town and don't want to travel, stop on in and you should be satisfied. They also have good specials on food and/or drinks on certain days, so if you come at the right time you may be getting a nice deal. Not my favorite, but I live in town and I wouldn't my nose up at this place. read more
