This location was the previous home of La Morovena, which was also a Puerto Rican carry-out only restaurant. La Morovena moved to 8th & Greenfield, and El Rincon Criollo now serves here.
I ordered an alcapurria, which is a mix of plantain and root vegetables pureed and filled with meat, potatoes, and seasoning, then deep fried. It was pretty good and larger than I expected.
My entree was mofongo, a large ball of mashed green plantain which is deep fried and filled with seasoning and bits of chicharron, with bistek encebollado (steak cooked in oil and onions). The mofongo had decent flavor and a substantial amount of chicharron, which helped counter the otherwise disappointingly soft texture of the mofongo. The steak was tender and the flavor was solid.
I would definitely go back to try other menu items, or one of the daily specials. read more
