One of the hardest things about cooking for one is managing your meat selection. Most grocery…read morestores don't have a dedicated butcher, so your stuck having to buy in pre packaged portion sizes. One of the greatest mysteries in life for me has always been why the smallest amount of chicken breast you can buy is three, and then the next size up is a super mega family 20 pack. Anyway ... That's why the best thing you can do is find yourself a good Mexican butcher shop, like La Altena. The selection isn't big or complicated, however everything they DO have is of high quality. They have marinated steak and chicken fajitas which are very tasty and pretty much impossible to mess up when cooking. They have smoked pork chops, marinated meat for tacos al pastor, and a very good authentic chorizo. Try their tablitas, which are spare ribs cut across the rib (think galbi). On the weekends they have a limited amount of homemade tortillas for sale, its first come first serve and by midday they're usually out. There is also a small store here with mostly non perishable goods for sale. They have a cooler in the back and its always stocked with Jarritos two liters so go ahead and grab you one of those to enjoy. Service is friendly and helpful, I once let them know that I was buying chicken breast for milanesa which requires a thin breast to be pounded out. Without any prompting from me the butcher offered to slice the whole breasts in half to make it easier, saved me 30 minutes of work. I will warn you though, you're probably going to have to know Spanish or be really really confident in your communication with hand gestures and slow talking. They do take cards but theres a $5 minimum. Grab you a pound of fajitas, a two liter of Jarritos Limon and a stack of tortillas and you'll be out of there for $7-$8 Trying is the first step towards failure.

She is the one who recommended the Quesabirria tacos after I asked her what she recommended, since a lot of the dishes on the menu looked good. The ambience is inviting and festive with its traditional colorful passport cut decorations known as paper picado. It's definitely a little homey and reminded me of my family who are in another state. The interior is spacious with a lot of tables and chairs. They also sell meat, other products and some produce that's located on the right-hand side after entering. I ended up ordering Quesabirria tacos place which included rice and beans. Their Quesabirria tacos with their birria consommé was amazing. The meat was flavorful, tender, with consommé with both their green and red-hot sauces were just chef's kiss. The meat didn't have fat, since a lot of places do serve it with all the fatty parts, so it was awesome that these Quesabirria tacos didn't have the meat fat in them. By far some of the best Quesabirria tacos with their bomb hot sauces. I complimented the lady who made them since I walked over to the area where you order and behind the counter is where they cook the food. The lady who made them said, thank you, it was me who made them and she said she was happy to hear I was happy with them. Honestly, these Quesabirria tacos were cooked with umami, especially with the hot sauces. I'm craving them now that I'm writing this up. Hehe he You all have to check them out and if you love Quesabirria tacos you most definitely have to stop by. I also ordered an Aguas fresca and opted for their cantaloupe Aguas fresca. It was okay, but I wasn't a fan, it didn't taste like it was made from cantaloupe, it tasted more like prepackaged powder to me, so that was the only let-down. My friend and her kiddo enjoyed their food. Overall, a great experience, from superb customer service to deliciously awesome food. I'll be back for sure. You definitely have to stop by to see yourself. Don't miss out.

Pretty good little carneceria. Located next to the "Poop Deck" (Fort Worthians will know this…read moreplace) at Granbury & Seminary intersection, its a pretty tiny little storefront with a smattering of Mexican-style grocery items but mostly it is a long meat counter with extraordinarily-awesome looking cuts of meat. What I noticed was how thinly sliced they all are--and that's exactly how I want them. Went in there looking for tripas (what I thought was intestines) because Fiesta down the street didn't have it. My dumb friend saw a Bizarre Foods episode and "learned" how to make them from watching it. The guy spoke English, to my relief, and said the tripas was frozen. I said that's fine and in a minute he handed me a baggie full of cut up cubes of frozen tripe. It was not intestines at all, but by the time my brain calculated all this, dude was onto the next customer. There were several in line. So I lived with it. The store though? Great!

They have 9 tables. 5 were open, there were 3 people at the register, and there was one girl tending to the floor. We stood at the door while she cleaned 2 tables she never looked at us or gave any direction although she walked by us and through us twice. We decided to grab a bread from the panadería on our own and take a table. We waited another 10 minutes before someone else walked in, they too took a table, got their own drinks out of a cooler, chose a bread from the panadería, then she came to take their order. By then we were done with our bread, still no drinks. As she walked away I asked her if she could take our order. Ordered breakfast, my son ordered his food and a can coke. She brought him a large glass bottle Mexican coke. A family of 8 walked in & took a seat. She tended to them, they got bread, tamales, and drinks before I got my coffee now 35 minutes into our visit. 48 min from our arrival we got our food. I got one more taco than I ordered, and they forgot my sons food. They fixed the issue fairly quickly and we ate in silence. Halfway into his second taco my son said: "The service is bad but the food is good!". I agree 100%. Would have given one star if the food had not saved them. Saved by the cook! When the table of 8 got their food, the owner had to come out to talk to them because their food order was messed up severely. Turns out they have a used car lot running out of the same location and the reason for all the cars.

Here's the reason I will not return after my 3rd visit: Worst servers I've ever had every single time I've come in. They all act so miserable to be here, no smiles or grace whatsoever. After they bring your food out they will sit at a table in the front and you will not get your drinks refreshed, or anything else you might need unless you get up and ask. It's horrible. After 3 similar experiences, I'm gonna miss the food but not enough to come back into this hostile environment. Duece's!
