We decided to try this place out after driving by it severl times. It was 545 pm on a Friday night. It wasn't busy, maybe 8-10 tables were filled. We were seated right away and given menus, chips and salsa right away. Three more tables filled up after we got there. Two tables got their drinks and finished ordering and the third got their drinks and was just finishing up ordering and we still hadn't had a anyone check on us. We had been there 15 minutes and decided to leave. As we checked in at the hostess station the manager and three employees were talking, I was just waiting until they were done. I heard the manager say to one waitress to go to a table, nobody has been there yet. She snapped "I'm not going to that table now, they will be nasty to me and it's not my fault". They argued briefly and the one waitress stormed off almost knocking me over. Then one waitress asked if she could help me. I said that we have been waiting for 15 minutes and we are now leaving. The manager snapped at the one waitress "see, I told you". The other just said sorry. I wouldn't waste my time going back to this place....... Really wanted to like this place, but every dish we had was just generically bad. All of the vegetables were old and wilted and actually brown - days past expiration date. Too much of this, too little of that, etc... basically what you'd expect if someone said sub-standard Mexican fare with no quality and zero authenticity. I see there are some good Yelp reviews here, so maybe ours was just a fluke, but we ordered 3 separate meals and they were all equally yuck. Definitely won't be dining here again. read more

I'm going to give it 4 stars for now because I haven't tried everything on the menu. Finally came to try this place and I was pleasantly surprised! I arrived with my husband and daughter at around quarter to 5 on a Tuesday evening. And we were the only people along with another couple that was already there dining. But the crowd started coming a little after 5. The tortilla chips are really good, salsa is okay, I prefer a more chunkier salsa. I tried the banana margarita. Oh boy it was DA BOMB! And not weak! Sooooo good! I ordered the chipotle enchiladas which came with 3 (shredded chicken, ground beef, shredded beef). The meat was seasoned very well. Yummy!!! The hubbs got the chimichanga and my daughter the carne asada tacos. They both enjoyed their meals. My husband tried the tortas (sandwich) and said it was really delicious. I would definitely go back especially for some margaritas. It's good to have a decent restaurant in the area because I get really tired of either traveling to Loudoun, Winchester, Fairfax, or Frederick for good eats. Well, our first time here. The service was ok The Enchiladas and the Chimichanga were tasty. Portion size and prices are fine. HOWEVER, the cleanliness of this place leaves little to be desired. That is why we probably would wait awhile to ever visit again. The floors throughout the restaurant were littered with food & dirt. The women's restroom was awful. The toilet would not flush and their were no paper towels.pour worry is that if the cleanliness is like this in the dining area, what is the kitchen like. Our family goes there every week and one of our daughters will literally cry if we go somewhere else, that's how much she loves it. Super nice welcome and a sweet waitress. I ordered beef fajitas and the soup. Soup came out nice and hot with delicious flavor. Beef in the fajitas was super thin and burned on the hot plate. Brought our family of eight for our first time dining here since they opened. I have a pretty quick test on how good a Mexican restaurant will be....and that's based on how good are the chips and salsa when you first sit down. The chips were warm and crispy and the salsa very good with a little spicy bite. Great start. We had fajitas, chimichangas, enchiladas, chicken chipotle and a steak fajita taco salad. We have loved all of our meals here this far! Katie is a wonderful server. It has been a tiny bit slow, but I think its just because they have been so busy when we have come. My husband is from San Diego so we are always looking for places to get good Mexican food. We ordered take out for our first visit. Only major complaint was we asked for one dish not to have sour cream and it came with it anyway. My father did have a burrito with what looked like pieces of the outside of the onion chopped up in it, which was not appetizing to eat. The inside is rather cold and the seat was somewhat uncomfortable which took away from the experience some, but once the food started to come I was very pleased. Just had the best service I have ever received in a restaurant. I've eaten all over the world at wonderful restaurants, and while the food at El Ranchero is great - Ray the server made the experience one of the best meals I have ever had. A lovely man who anticipated all of our needs, we never needed to ask for anything except to order - and even then I deferred to his opinion on a dish. Even both of my parents were so impressed with Ray's attention to detail and attentiveness. He takes an average dining experience to the NEXT level . 3 time was not a charm. We went at a busy time and sat in the bar until our table was ready. Drinks were good at the bar. When called for our table they had given it away by the time we walked from the bar to the hostess stand. They said they would get us another soon but forgot about us. The manager did give us a round of drinks for our trouble. On to dinner... Ordered meals for the four of us. Took quite awhile as usual to come out. When they did, they only brought 2 at first, one of which was a salad on top of a hot plate??????? They like to bring their dishes out with oven mits (gross by the way). But a salad on a hot plate? The salad had no dressing (again) and no mango salsa nor did the waiter tell me ahead of time they were out of the salsa. So a hot salad with no dressing and missing a main menu listed ingredient. They also brought a side for another missing entree which made ZERO sense. 10 or more minutes go by before the other 2 entrees come out. This seems to be a BAD habit of this place. Bringing half the meals to the table and delaying the rest. This needs to be improved upon. Also an entree yet again was missing a key ingredient. I can understand having some missteps as a new restaurant but some things you should know before you open a place. The food is decent when it comes out finally and would be better if it came out as listed on the menu. Chips are meh and salsa is probably out of a can. Drinks are good though but again take a long time. Our first visit our meals (or should I say one meal followed ten minutes later by the other one) came out before our drinks even arrived. Went in for dinner around 5pm with my husband and daughter, they took us to a table that was dirty and we stood there while she wiped it off. The wait wasn't too bad but when my daughters Mac n cheese came out with this spoon on the plate I was instantly disgusted. They took the spoon away and replaced it with a new one but that was all. No explanation etc. My food came out with things that I requested to be removed. (No beans, no quac) The rest of the food was just ok. This is probably the worst Mexican restaurant I've been to... the tacos I ordered were super burned as cold, they had more cilantro and onions than meat. The service was bad I ordered a couple other things, but was told that they didn't serve that, when it was clearly in the menu. Being the newest Mexican food restaurant in town, I definitely wanted to check it out. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful: modern interior design and gorgeous hand-painted murals decorate the walls. Daily specials are artfully presented on the wall as soon as you walk in. It was fairly busy, so we waited about 5 minutes to be seated. Once seated, we were presented with chips and salsa and had our drink orders taken. The chips could have used more salt for my taste, and the salsa was mildly spicy and of average taste. We ordered the $5 Wednesday 20oz margaritas (tamarindo and peach), which were delicious! We ordered waters shortly after, which took about 10 minutes to arrive. For food, we ordered the chicken chimichanga and the seafood chimichanga, which arrived in good time considering the business. The rice and beans were clearly microwaved and lackluster in taste. The cheese sauce that smothers the chimichangas was poured over the entirety of the chicken dish, saturating everything else on the plate. Both dishes were average at best. Our waiter was cordial, but didn't make any extra effort to stand out above the average waiter. All in all, we left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. I will probably try El Ranchero again in the distant future to simply give it a chance at redemption, but I don't recommend the restaurant considering other better Mexican food options in town. read more

My mom and I thought we'd check this place out. Went around 4:30 on a Thursday so it wasn't busy. Got seated right away, chips and salsa came right to our table. A couple minutes later, server came over to take our drink order (iced teas). Came back with the drinks and we said we needed another minute. About 15 minutes later (after passing our table several times) he came over to take our order. 25 minutes later, food comes to our table by another server-but it wasn't ours. I told her that and she said "are you sure?" Yes, I know what I ordered. She leaves, comes back with the same food and our server, who tried to give us this food. We tell him again what we ordered. He realizes the mistake. My moms order was served to the table behind us around the same time. They said that wasn't their order. So she gets her food and I wait 10 more minutes for mine, which was lukewarm. I do not send food back so I ate some of it. Glad I tried this place but I think there are better places in the area. read more
