Food was good but our server was bad!! Me and my girlfriend ordered 7 tacos in total. It turned out to be $38!! When i asked for a recipt, the waiter said he asked if I wanted a recipt earlier, but I know he didn't. Not only we have to wait almost 15 minutes just to get the server over but then he snuck and added his own tip onto the card! Pros- cheese dip was quite good. One of better ones I have had in Decatur and Hartselle area. Fries were good. My kid had the fries. Fajitas were good. I don't think anything was great. Nothing there made me have to go back. I would go back but the service is bad. It is one of those places where they have two hostesses and they had maybe 6 tables of people there at the time. My water was empty over half the time I was there. How many refills did they bring me? 1 and I had to ask for it. Did I mention we sat across from the hostess. They could actually see our table and see that we were all out of water. But they stood around and talked. I don't know if we just made them mad, but there was not much interaction at all. I thought about the fact that maybe some people don't need refills, and while that might be true for some, many of us do like more water. Also water is free, or cheap enough. All it takes is leg work. How about having one of the hostess walk around with a water pitcher when no one is waiting to be seated? Just a thought. Another cool thing is this is one of the most artistic Mexican restaurants, it really is cool all the chairs having neat designs! read more

I don't expect much from Mexican restaurants in the south however there is a minimum that you should receive both in service and quality of food. I ordered the Daiquiri and ended up having a watered down somewhat strawberry tasting drink it was absolutely horrible and not worth the price I had to pay. Then for dinner I ordered their Arrow Jalisco, such a disappointment. When the food come out it looked like a handful of meat that was burnt on a griddle and thrown on some rice the description was Grilled Chicken shrimp steak with cheese sauce over a bed of rice. About the only thing accurate in that description is the bed of rice of which you got plenty it was just extremely dry and flavorless. If you go here don't expect much but expect to pay as the whole bill came to over $56 for two entrees and two drinks I don't mind paying this but you got to give me something in return. On top of that customer service lacked 100% I was actually pointed to the chair I should sit in when we walked in with no menus. If you go here good luck read more

We really enjoyed the tamales, so much so that when we went a second time, we got the same thing. Salsa was fresh and excellent and they give a small cup of white sauce that is so good! The server was attentive and although the restaurant itself was not new by any means, it was very clean. read more

I had fajitas and they were pretty good. Ordered shrimp, beef, and chicken with the fajitas and the beef was sparse. The service was good. The food my wife ordered was floating in water. I will not be coming back to type restaurant the Customer service was horrible. My bf and I waited for 45 mins to ask our waitress where is our food. It was other nationalities who came in after us received better service than we did and received their food before we did. I My bf and I was out trying to celebrate cinco de Mayo and we didn't get to enjoy ourselves. Lastly we talked to the owner and all he could say was pay $10 for the three margaritas which one did not get along with the wait for food, Pepsi and cheese dip. El Portal is my family's and friend's favorite mexican joint in town. The food is delicious, and always HOT HOT HOT. The service is polite and fast. The decor is a festival for my eyes. I never knew there were so many colors that came in neon. The place is packed on Sundays, but the rest of the week it it pretty easy to get a table upon arrival. My only issue is the salsa. Last summer when I was home and my friends and I ate at El Portal the salsa was fresh, and obviously homemade. Last night when I dinned there the salsa was from a jar, and someone had poured tabasco sauce in it.... for flavor? I don't know. Everything else is great. Just order the queso. read more

El Portal is fast, friendly, and the food it good... I don't consider it the best Mexican restaurant in Hartselle but it is the 2nd best. The prices are reasonable and they make sure your glasses are full... Which is a must for hot spicy food. read more

Horrible. First off the cheese dip was like water. The enchilada wraps were soggy and the chicken had an odd flavor. The rice was bland and the tomatoes had a bad dark red coloring. I will not be back and I will not recommend this place. read more
