I order a steak sandwich, the sandwich had lettuce, tomato, onions, ketchup and a tiny piece of chicken. The flavor was good, when I told the waitress and show her the inside of the sandwich she admitted that it was very small. Her excuse was that the cook was new and didn't know. A Hidden Gem El Pilon Caribbean Restaurant in Fort Myers Florida is a Hidden Gem. If you want to taste the most fabulous Spanish food you have got to try this restaurant. Spanish food is an absolute favorite of mine, and I know good Spanish food when I taste it. I have been eating it for over 40 years in places like New York and New Jersey. This small quaint place is just as good. I had the marinated pork which I found out is marinated for 12 hours. The owner, Jose, does all of the cooking. Jose and his wife are adorable. They are such humble people and welcome you into their restaurant as though you are family. You can guarantee that I will be back many more times. It's a must-try. read more

While I was out in Fort Myers, I needed to taste Mofongo again since I been craving it so. One of my colleagues recommended this place, and I loved my dish! I got the Shrimp Garlic Sauce Mofongo. It was tasty and authentic like I was in Cuba! They have a clean interior and the music makes you want to get up and dance. I liked the decor inside and the paintings they had which gives it more of a Caribbean atmosphere. They only reason why it isn't 5 stars is because I felt as if my plate could of had more sides and less sweet plantain. Maybe some rice or some veggies or something. But besides that I'd give it 4.5 out of 5 stars! It is a well known place as I see people come in and order to go or dine in like we did. Nestled in the corner of the shopping center just south of Colonial Blvd on South Cleveland Ave is this gem serving up Puerto Rican food. Not a fancy joint but there is some charm with tables set up with old fashioned diner style napkin holders and plastic ketchup bottles but don't let that keep you from taking a seat after getting a friendly welcome and making a selection from menu. After ordering my dinner I was presented with a bowl of fresh plantain chips served with a tangy garlic sauce which was unexpected and quite good. One word can describe my entree. "¡Delicioso!" I selected the bandeja jibara which is a combination meal where you are given options of the type of meat and rice you wish to have along with a salad, mofongo and a pastel. Small place, dirty menus and terrible food. Place is so small that we almost didn't fit on the tables. Menus were given to us full of bread crumbs and dust. Anyone attends your table, you don't have a server for you specifically Black rice was dry and looked like everything but rice. Salad had no dressing at all, we were not asked either. Visited El Pilon twice while in Ft Myers. Food was good. I tried Mofongo and Pernil and the tried the Bistec Encabollado. Mofongo was good and Pernil was good, The Bistec was good but a bit oily. The tostones and arroz moro were also good but didn't taste freshly made. Service was good and the woman who I assumed is an owner was very nice. The lunch I had, Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), yellow rice with pigeon peas and plantains, with Mango nectar for little over $10. The Ropa Vieja was tasty and yellow rice has beautiful presentation and good for the tongue. The service was excellent. She checked at least 3 times to ensure everything is in order. Simply great customer services! This is a small place and not an upscale restaurant for a date but you can definitely have a nice meal here. The location is sketchy, the food is disappointing and the service is bad. There is not much going for this place and I suspect it won't be around for long. First, the location is strange and not easy to find but the place inside is not bad. It's small and has seating for about 20-25 ppl. I ordered the lechón asado sandwich with everything on it. After waiting for 15min I got my order. The sandwich was disappointing right from the start. The bread is huge and the meat portion is not, also the most infuriating detail was that it was cold!! The pork was not even warm. The entire sandwich was bland and dry and just awful. I would've preferred a fast food value burger, it would've saved me money and I'm sure it would've been warmer. I can't believe this is the ONLY Puerto Rican restaurant in the entire Ft. Myers area! Only reason we went here was because of that. This little place didn't disappoint though. The service was great & the food was delicious! I think the only thing I would say is that it's small and doesn't have many tables available. We went on a Saturday around 4pm and there was a junior league baseball team with their parents (well maybe not the entire team) but they occupied pretty much the entire restaurant. We were lucky to get the only two chair table available on the right side of the restaurant. The inside isn't like a fancy restaurant let alone like a chain restaurant, it's more like a mom & pop joint that's just starting out. We ordered two fritters (alcapurrias) for appetizers. It's one per order (other places can be two or three per order). The filling is 'carne' aka ground beef. The menu doesn't say it but that's standard. Other places have at least two filling options, another one being 'jueyes' (Puerto Rican spanish for crabs). The dough is either 'green banana' or cassava (yuca). However, the green banana usually is made with the green banana AND the green plantain. Two different things. Both were good but just know that Puerto Rican fried food is NOT figure friendly. The main concern is flavor! :) For main dish, as usual, we went for the mofongo (mine shrimp with garlic sauce & other with pork chops). The mofongo was good but I've had better. My shrimp with garlic sauce was to my surprise, delicious. When I first saw it I thought it would taste more like sazón with achiote since the sauce is so orangy red. But it tasted like the typical 'camarones al ajillo estilo puertorriqueño'! It was very yummy! Uhm I tried a bit of the pork chop chunks and they were flavorful but a little dry (not too dry). But if you're like me that prefers your mofongo drenched with some type of sauce I recommend the shrimp with garlic sauce or the chicken broth. That usually helps since mofongo alone, although very delicious, can be dry and it literally fills you up with two to three bites! As for drinks, we wanted something typical Puerto Rican and they have a few options but the parcha juice (passion fruit) is not homemade or even Puerto Rican, it's a product of Perú. And lastly, I do have to say that I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out why they would paint the Puerto Rican flag the way they did on the wall? It should be three red stripes & two whites ones. We didn't asked but I should've. Bueno, if you're craving Puerto Rican food I would recommend it since it's the only one around and the food & service are good. read more

Ok so we hadn't been to this place in a long while. Today we went in and the servers were GREAT. Friendly sweet patient. We hand the Jibaro plate which was delicious. The food was not salty, the meat was soft, the pastel was delicious and not salty at all, everything was wonder. Now we also ordered the tostone hamburger did not like it to much the tostone itself was to thick. That needs to get better. We also had a acapuria which was hard and did not like either. Even though the service could have been better, I still gave it a 5 star because we were a group of 12 and showed up an hour before closing and caught them unprepared for such a large party - it is not a very big place and it is tucked away in a corner of a shopping strip. With this being said, the food is authentic Puerto Rican fare and with reasonable portions. Everything we ordered was delicious; the mofongo, alcapurrias, arroz con gandules, etc. The Prices were also reasonable especially for the size of our group and everything we ordered; from appetizers, beers, shakes, soft drinks to espresso.
