Seriously these people deserve a 5 star. They have many patients, so if they don't answer it is because they are busy. I have been there to witness that. The day staff are very professional. So a couple things I learned about this place: it used to be known as University Behavioral Health (UBH) and you can see the awe-striking El Paso star on the mountain. I've also learned that mental health is not my forte for patient care and I highly appreciate all the nurses and staff here who are able to take on all the patients who come through here. The first day of clinicals, my group and I were waiting on our instructor and there was a very aggressive man who was banging on the glass doors and yelling at the staff. He was demanding to see someone who was admitted there. We were all pretty shaken up from that but at the same time, we knew he very much needed help there too. He was checked into inpatient that same day and within hours after the staff was able to de-escalate the situation. I was surprised that they allowed him into the building with all the students and other visitors still in the lobby as he was clearly a danger to all of us. There is a great arrangement of areas that best suit the needs for patients. There was one for Veterans, Geriatric, Children and Adolescents, an older group of teenagers separating boys and girls, and much more. I was thoroughly impressed. I was also appreciative of the the vast knowledge and skills I was able to learn from the different nurses and some of which I owe it to who have helped me get past my fear of outbursts like the one I witnessed the first day. Each floor has a well kept day room for the patients to congregate and eat their meals together. Some of the areas were very disorganized and sometimes certain needed supplies weren't available. I believe overall, the establishment is very critical for El Paso and I'm thankful for the staff and their willingness to show the most compassion for patients here. read more

I went here almost a year ago now, I was put on a med that they kept bumping the dose up I was at such a high dose two time a day which I looked up you should not give that much in 24 hrs, it would over lap and be twice the dose I was on, I was in bad shape from it, slur speech, I was staring at walls for hrs without knowing, I was stumbling, Heart rate was over 120 all the time after, I would tell the nurses they would just say I was just anxious, the sluring was very noticable but who cares right? I was discharged finally my family noticed and took me off the meds right away, I felt too many emotions at once I was in the hospital not even 3 days later, my speech will no longer be the same. read more

If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health issues, I highly recommend seeking help ANYWHERE else first before resorting to this establishment. 1. You are required to sign so many pieces of paper when you are not in your right state of mind. I was not allowed to call anyone beforehand. This in itself should be illegal. You are required to sign a piece of paper that essentially gives away your rights, and if you DON'T sign, then you are threatened with an EDO and told you won't be able to speak to a judge for DAYS before anyone can let you know how long you'll be forced to stay in the facility. It is really disconcerting how people are treated in this regard. The people who work here know exactly what they are doing. One woman was going to sign herself out AMA and was told to take it back immediately, lest she get forced to stay even longer with an EDO. 2. I did not receive adequate care. I let a different person know every single day that I could not eat meat, and NO ONE CARED. No one made a note, no one wrote it down. On Thanksgiving I had nearly no lunch because it all had meat. 3. My concerns were not heard. I tried to explain that I wanted to spend the holidays with my family, that I was concerned about the cost of care, and other issues and I was dismissed, ignored, invalidated, and perhaps worst of all, BLAMED and GUILTED for "taking up too much time" when I was speaking about genuine and legitimate concerns regarding MY WELLBEING. I am genuinely concerned that very shady, if not illegal things, may be happening at this facility. (I don't think you can prevent people from seeing their children, yet they did...) 4. What do you need for better mental health? Sunlight? Exercise? Proper sleep? Nutrition? Guess what I was not provided. We rarely got to go outside, techs did not stick to our "schedule", people had to beg to go out for a GUARANTEED smoke break and were DENIED, we were not allowed to go to the "gym" multiple times for exercise. It really was the worst conditions to try to improve mental health. They post on social media how great the facility is, but that nice pool and exercise room? We weren't allowed to use them. We basically had to sit in a room all day, watching TV, and having 2 group therapy sessions (we didn't get any individual therapy. And when I finally got to speak to the "therapist" alone, she specifically told me to be short and brief because "there's not a lot of space on the paper".) 5. You are kept in the dark about a release date. People with jobs, kids, responsibilities were freaking out because of this. 6. Loved ones calling repeatedly told me that no one answers the phone. And now I'm stuck with a bill I can't pay because they didn't listen to me. I was there about a week and it cost about $20,000, just for me to sit in a room and not get adequate food or care. This place is everything wrong with our mental health system; they are in it for the money and all the patients know it. We all talked about it when workers weren't around. I saw one woman who was obviously in a worse mental state than me get discharged because her insurance wouldn't pay anymore. I was told by patients and workers to just "play along" to try to get out. This isn't right. The workers know it and the patients know it. To those who run this facility: shame on you. To those workers, nurses, and techs who showed genuine care and concern: you're the only reason I felt human in that horrible establishment. This place nearly broke me, but some of you reminded me that I'm not just a way to make some money. read more

It's helped me be less suicidal also the inpatient program is fun but for some people it's not but some of the techs are nice and my favorite therapist is Jose in outpatient. read more

If I could rate this place a zero I would beware when sending your loved ones here.My daughter went seeking help with and came back not her self at all.She has recollection of anything and her mind is worse than ever she is 18 years old was looking fo to college instead she came bk with a mind of toddler.Staff was unprofessional and did not communicate at all .All she remembers is that they were mean .They kept sayMing they weren't gna release her because of her insurance guess needed to squeeze every last dollar from them.Becareful with this facility!!!!! read more

I was an inpatient in the adolescents unit. The teachers, nurses, and staff were kind to me, but the place in general made me worse, and all they did was give me medication. I got more anxiety, and now from nowhere I get overwhelmed when there's more than 8 people around me, and the medication was making me sleepy and drowsy. They did nothing about it. I also almost got into a fight because there was a lot of drama happening, and I kept telling them that I didn't feel safe and wanted them to separate groups, but they said that there wasn't enough staff, and couldn't separate us. Then I realized that they had gotten to separate the boys unit, and that didn't make any sense, because I asked and they just kept telling me to keep my distance and ignore her, but her comments were hurtful and hard to ignore, so I told them, once again, that I didn't feel safe, and again, they just told me to ignore it. One time she also yelled at me and I told the tech, but she just said "See, we all know _______" (not putting the name due to confidentiality) and took it as a joke. Let's hope this place can improve and have "enough staff" in the future, and actually do something to help their patients because they can get triggered and not feel safe in certain situations. Never going inpatient here again. Outpatient has better services to be honest. And we're there to get help, not to get worse. So fix this place and do better. Honestly. read more

The nursing staff and therapy staff do the best with what they can, unfortunately El Paso Behavioral Health System is BROKEN. The building, facilities and system is extremely outdated. I am currently a patient in the facility, in the Military unit and I have seen many patients come and go. Many of the same patients that get discharged return a few days later. I can make assumptions about why. Even on the military unit there are several patients that do nothing other than sleep, eat and go to smoke breaks. They never attend groups. Why are they taking up beds especially when the hospital is at capacity. Currently the census on the Military Unit is at 25 patients, there are only 18 beds available, The extra patients are housed in other units, but they are given the choice to sleep on the chairs in the day room. Many of them do, making the day room into a homeless shelter. I was on the receiving end of having a patient from another unit hose in my room. She came into my room very sick. She had a wicked cough and told me she had a really bad lung infection. Regardless, the intake staff at EPBHS still put her in my room a few feet away from where I was sleeping. Now I am in the hospital at Sierra Providence with Pneumonia and a white blood count over 20,000. This could have been prevented if they had infection control protocols in place, but they don't. It's a dirty place that is used for things, like getting off the street not for getting better. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more

Young teen male wanted to check himself in due to his feelings of depression. A short intake suggested depression and anxiety and the intake person said she saw no evidence of other things. Of course there was no observation, just a batch of screening questions and they were all directed at the patient, not the parents. Patient called home after 2 days to go home because he was getting little support at the hospital and was assaulted. We received no notes or suggestions or charts or anything on his stay there, basically just his intake sheet. They did not seem to communicate with patient's therapist or psychiatrist, just made abrupt meds change that was for the worse (they couldn't necessarily forsee that, but could have talked to the other professionals who knew more about his case). They charged $6450 for the 3-day stay (less because of insurance, but seems had to see the value). Patient said he'd be happy to go another place that could help him find a path to being happy, but would not go back there. read more

This place is a crock of you know what. I brought my mom here and they said they could help her. She was having hallucinations and delusions and was a danger to herself. Both times I went to see her (only 2 visiting days a week) she didn't seem any better. The therapist called me and told me they were releasing her after only 6 days. She's no better now. I don't know what they do there but they certainly don't help people. Don't take your loved ones here if you want them to get help, because they won't. One lady said it was the 7th time her son was admitted there and he always came out the same. Waste of time and money! Thank for nothing. read more

Out of the 3 places I have had to 'visit' in the area, I would say UBH is top notch. The therapy sessions are great, the nurses care, and they do help with meds, and the food is good. (just dont upset the main lady that cooks the meals. she really is a sweet lady, but if you get on her bad side you may end up with the dried out part of dinner . . . know what i mean.) the supply of coffee/cappuccino and fresh filtered cold water and crushed ice is a treat. You also have liberal phone access. (unless you are in the PICU, then all that nice stuff goes bye bye) they really help you out here. i love it. id live here if i could . . . seriously. read more

It is nice in there..they have nurses that care except those scary nurses that work at night that are rude. But they have all you can eat buffet, soda fountains, and several varieties of food you can eat. They provide great counseling and the other patients there are so entertaining, to put it mindly.. They even have smoke breaks..The nurses during the day or the sweetest and really do care. The bad thing..And this is bad..If you go there and just looking for outpatient services, they will lock you in with metal doors and YOU CAN NOT get out. Even if you say you have plans that evening and need to leave. They will hold you against your will even if you want to leave and make you stay atleast a couple of weeks.. It's a very nice couple of weeks, filled with art classes, church services, exercise room with pool, therapy sessions 3 times a day that are interesting. read more

I took my wife clothes and they never gave it to her. she was four days and left the clinic with the same clothes as when she entered. a supervisor told me that they would give it to her after doing an inspection on his clothes and that never happened. what a shame that they treat our families like this. read more

Extremely disappointed with my experience. My son wanted to check himself in. We were greeted by the first employee to take our temp (COVID precautions). She was nice. The receptionist, rude and disrespectful. Mental illness doesn't mean we don't know any better. We waited for hours in the lobby for him to be taken back for his assessment. During those many hours of waiting, we witnessed the housekeeping employee and the girl taking temps discussing another patient that was waiting in the lobby. They spoke Spanish so she wouldn't understand them but once again doesn't mean we didn't understand. It didn't end there. We continued to wait and not a single person acknowledged us to update us or apologize for the wait. Employee after employee walked in and out, security, nursing staff, etc. Not one made a positive comment. Security was just hanging out in the lobby as if there was some sort of social gathering. I later heard it's their protocol during shift change. My suggestion, find another area to meet that is not a patient area. Other Staff coming in were complaining about having to work, staff leaving thanking God they were leaving. As a retired clinic director myself this did not set a comfortable tone with me or my son. There were so many policies broken by the staff it's a miracle the state hasn't shut you down. After wasting the entire day, we decided to leave without being seen. Patients come in because they need assistance and because they come in the door, they provide the funds to to meet payroll. Word of advice. The tone you set let us to believe it would not benefit anyone suffering from depression or anxiety as they would come out worse than what they came in with. If staff is that miserable coming and leaving, either find another job or speak up about what makes this so miserable to your higher ups. It's not the patients fault. read more

I only gave this place a one star because I had to select something in order to post but they don't deserve not even the one star rating. Most horrible experience unfriendly staff, rude careless about the patients coming in. Took me 8 hours to be admitted and less than five minutes to realize it was not going to work for me. When I expressed my dissatisfaction and said I wanted to leave I was given the runaround saying I was a danger to society and throwing in court orders. Patients are treated like animals, like prisoners! I am preparing a formal complaint against the facility. The "therapist" that took my intake information was very mean and rude to my wife. It is unbelievable how this institution expects patients to get better with the treatment they provide. Very very sad I will not stop seeking help until I find the right fit for me. read more

The staff here is beyond rude, the service is horrible. It takes a minimum of 5 hours for admission even if your the only person there. I had my daughter admitted and once she was there they refused to let her out even when she had made progress and was no danger to herself or anyone else. A patient must stay there until they say so or they threaten to call cps and basically hold your child ransom. They Bill your insurance for what they can before they agree to discharge. If your 5 minutes late for visitations you are not allowed to see your kid for what little time you can once daily. This place is the worst in health care and the reason why so many people go with out the mental health care they need. Please, I urge you to never admit your child or anyone you care about here. I agree with every word of that. My 9 year old is there willingly because of bullying in the school she is at and she threatened suicide. They didn't want us to visit her and give us less than 3 hours a week for visitation. This girl has never been away from home and we are military that moves every 3 years. The environment is stressful, non-therapeutic, and extremely confined. They locked us in a room for 4 hours and didn't even bother to turn a tv on when we first arrived. That should have been my queue to get the hell out of there. The doctor doesn't see my daughter except maybe a few minutes every couple of days but is sedating her and has her on new meds every other day. I am ready to take her out of there because of the appearance of my daughter: she was dirty, her lips were bleeding, her feet stunk and although I had kept sending her clean clothes, she was wearing the same thing I put her in 5 days ago. Definitely the worst place on earth to put anyone who is suffering from depression.. the walls are white and concrete, the atmosphere is cold, and the employees are slow, rude, and don't provide enough information for the parents of the children that are there. I will definitely be reporting this place to my insurance because I feel it is unfit to be a mental health facility. Let's just say it's like a prison.. it's on permanent lockdown and we couldn't even see our daughter without someone escorting us and telling us we are not allowed to take our phones in because of HIPPA violations... bullshit, they just don't want pictures taken of their poorly kept facility. This place is clearly unfit for even animals. I want my daughter home but they have made her so unstable that she can't come home until they stop drugging her. My husband is being held there like a prisoner!!! I told them the facility was unsuitable for humans and that every individual I had spoken to was rude and inept, that I was incredibly unhappy and am taking him home. The nurse said I could take him A.M.A and that it would take 4 hours. Since I had my 1.5 year old with me I decided to go home during the wait time. Before I left I said, "now I'm not going to be getting a call in 30 minutes saying you won't let him go" the nurse replied, "no ma'am, he will be released in 4 hours." A little bit after I got home my husband called saying the doctor will not release him!!!! I asked to speak to the doctor who wasn't even there (he hadn't even spoken to my husband) so I told the nurse that they were now holding my husband against his will and that I will be calling a lawyer in the morning. Ontop of that!!! This so called doctor changed his medication for no reason, without meeting him, for a completely different medication that wasn't even for his condition, and they kept giving him sedation shots!!!! This place needs to be closed down! It is a danger to its patients. We WILL be suing and reporting the facility and it's "doctors" to the state. read more
