Chips & Salsa & Spicy Queso (Fresh Fresh Fresh)
Aquarius P.

Me and a buddy were looking for a good Mexican spot after finishing a TV mounting job nearby, and we stumbled across El Norteño Taqueria. He had just said, "I wish we could find a hole in the wall," and sure enough, this was it. From the outside it looks small and tucked away, but once inside it's actually quite spacious. We were greeted promptly by our server, who was very kind and welcoming. Drinks: I ordered the horchata -- rich, creamy, and refreshing. My buddy got his go-to lemonade, which came out in a huge 32oz glass and was just as satisfying. Food: * My friend went with the quesadilla with asada plate -- big portion, perfectly crispy quesadilla, served with rice, beans, and salad. The homemade tortillas were a standout. * I had the Tejas Plate (combination plate) -- two cheese enchiladas, carne guisada, rice, beans, salad, and fresh flour tortillas. Everything was seasoned well, balanced in flavor, and had that traditional home-cooked touch. Their red and green salsa added the perfect kick without overpowering the dishes. The value was excellent -- $17.93 each for two generous plates plus large drinks. That's rare to find these days, especially with food this fresh and authentic. Overall, El Norteño Taqueria truly delivers what you hope for in a hole-in-the-wall spot: warm service, homemade food, and prices that make you want to come back. We'll definitely be returning.

I love to try taquerias. This was my first time at El Norteno for a late breakfast. The exterior and interior of this old house screams "authentic" and based on Yelp reviews, I felt it was safe to try out. The staff was friendly (although we needed some translation help at ordering time). I tried their machacado burrito (eggs, Mexican steak, onions, peppers, tomatoes, etc). It was very large and served piping hot along with two squeeze bottles of serious hot sauces. Without the salsas, it was very good. With the salsas it was really really good. Very filling also. Overall a really good breakfast for me. I'll go try something else from the menu next time I'm in NB.

This is one of the "Hole in wall" "Best Kept Secret" , "Locals know Best" kind of place!! We had some friends that live in New Braunfels take us here and it's delicious. Think authentic homemade Mexican food at a great price! Place is always packed, small inside and limited parking, but so worth it. The tacos are delicious, the gorditas, the El Pastor, the menudo and more! We have never had anything that was bad. Not fancy just good. You can order to go if you can't get a table. So so good!

Just realized that I haven't reviewed this place even though I order to go every single Sunday! This place is definitely a hole in the wall. If you blink you'll miss it. As you walk in you know the food is going to be authentic. You are greeted with a genuine smile and a "buenos días" (good morning). The to go section has little bar stools right next to the register. They have to go menus, specials, and even posters of the favorites up on the wall. I have to be honest, I've only ordered here to go. Plenty of times but always to go. It's about a 10 minute drive from my girlfriends apartment and food has always been warm when I get there. I highly recommend this place!

Restrooms are spacious and clean. Guacamole is served plentiful and with fresh, crispy chips in a nice wire basket with parchment type paper to absorb oil. Salted just right, the guacamole is served in a molcajete with a garnish of peeled grapes on a small vine. Those grapes had great flavor as well. The lunch specials were decent and we had a couple drinks which were tasty and visually appealing as well. I ordered the Enchiladas and to my surprise, when they were served, they were hot and cheesy. Took my first bite and was transported back to childhood, sitting at my abuela's mesa the surprise was pleasant and tugged at my heart strings. The plate comes with cilantro rice with a green color which was weird to me but very tasty. The beans were refried and had a great taste as well. We didn't get any tortillas so not sure that they serve them here. As the manager came around, I had to let him know that I was so pleasantly impressed at the transportation back to childhood. He verbalized his contentment at my experience when I simply came to celebrate my friend's birthday. Definitely will be back here again. 'lol

They have chips and salsa for the table, and they were good. Their virgin Pina Colada was also the bomb. That's the good part, the best part of the afternoon. Unfortunately, things went sideways quite a bit for my friends. One of them eats dairy free and gluten free. It was extremely difficult for her to find anything to eat there. At some point, a manager told her he'd have to reheat her tortillas in the microwave. Weird and disappointing option. She ordered the dish anyway, and it was just nothing noteworthy. My other friend had the seafood, a shrimp dish to be exact, and she had an upset stomach a couple of hours later that lasted until the evening. She hadn't eaten anything else. So we're not 100% sure it's because of this place, but seafood is a common culprit so it's very possible that it was. I don't think she finished her plate, if my memory serves me well. My husband had the chimichanga. I think it was fine. But it was dunked in beef tallow, which he had been warned about. I thought it was a strange thing to do, especially since you can fry it in normal oil and open the menu to vegetarians as well. Beef tallow is so 1851!... Out of all of us, I had the best experience, but I can't say the same or the rest of my party. Let's just say Adobe Cafe showed us the good, the bad and the ugly. Now, which one will you get when you visit? Spin the wheel of (mis)fortune and find out...

After a particularly long day, we decided to give them a try for an early dinner. We are so glad we did! We both decided to give their enchilada plates a try. I had the cheese and my husband had the beef. Both of our dishes were great! The food came out piping hot and plentiful. Our server was very attentive, but not intrusive. She checked on us regularly and even offered to bag up our chips and salsa that we didn't finish. They seem to have a very nice outside eating area with a playground for the kids. Since it was over 100 degrees that day, we chose to sit inside. We will definitely be adding Herbert's to our list of places to go when we're craving Mexican food!

We ordered chicken enchiladas with Crema sauce and rice, birria tacos , steak fajitas and more. It was very good and worth the price it wasn't badly priced in my opinion the food was very good and the food was out very fast. There was mister fans keeping it cool since it was a hot day and people had dogs and children playing on the playground it was super nice in the afternoon with the lights on the trees and music playing! Margaritas are delicious and have at least a shot of tequila. Voted best margarita since 2012 and I cannot dispute that. Chicken nachos hit the spot. Ate light getting BBQ later.

However, after giving…read morethis a lot of thought, I feel that's unfair to those looking to Yelp! for an honest opinion and experience. Additionally, Cantina del Rio advertising they have the "best margarita" made it all the worse that not only was it not the "best" or subpar, it was so bad half of us couldn't finish ours. And since I am being honest, locals warned me not to go to Cantina del Rio for the food, but the drinks were good. Taking that in consideration we have consistently avoided it until today, when all we wanted was a drink after a day in the river. I wish I could say at least the views were good, but after asking the hostess to sit us at the best seats in the house (it was late afternoon on a Tuesday so it was not an unfair request), we were sat outside to see the construction. No "rio". Not even a glimpse. I have to say we snacked on chips and salsa and queso and they were better than the drinks. It's such a cute spot and so disappointing that the margaritas were the "worst".
